How we can support your child's success

Year.One program

It’s not unusual for first-year students to face an adjustment to college life. Year.One is a program that helps your child with the transition to campus by assigning them a mentor to check in with, helping them learn about academic resources and effective study techniques, and keeping them informed about extra-curricular activities that can encourage participation in campus life.

The Academic Center

The Academic Center located in Alfond Hall provides study skills workshops, writing tutors, peer tutoring within various departments, individualized mentoring for academic success, and accommodations for students with disabilities. Our YEAR.ONE program matches a faculty or staff mentor to each first-semester freshman. Faculty and staff members meet with students regularly throughout their first year, helping them to assess their strengths and weaknesses, as well as, assist in their transition to college. The Academic Center also work with each student to set goals for academic success and to connect students with help they may need.

Internships - where your child learns firsthand and receives credit

We foster internships in the Greater Portland area through our connections with businesses and organizations. Intern placements include American Red Cross, L.L. Bean, Lake Region Animal Hospital, Portland Sea Dogs, Maine State Government, and many more.

Career services

The career services office will help your child with career assessment, résumé writing, workshops, employment, internships, grad school and prepare for job interviews.

Counseling center

The college experience can bring challenges – both positive and not-so-positive. Counseling Center staff can often help students deal with some of the difficulties encountered along the way.

Join our
parents council

Parents Council is a voice for all former and current parents of SJC students. As a governing body, the group discusses opportunities, issues, and challenges to present to the administration. The focus is on encouraging participation in the Parents Fund, serving as the communication liaison between the college and parents, assisting in developing and promoting programs for families, and spreading the word about Saint Joseph’s to the outside community.
