Who Contributes?

Foundations & Corporations

Who Contributes? l Alumni l Friends of the College l Faculty & Staff l Families

Whether located right here in Maine or as distant as Indiana, foundations and corporations have made a significant difference in the growth and development of the College. Some grants are as small as $2,000; others are as large as $1 million. All are investments in the lives of Saint Joseph’s students.

Foundation and corporate support has made a difference through:

• Scholarships for academically gifted students whose families need help in meeting the total costs of their education

• Grants for faculty active in important research areas

• Cutting-edge projects such as putting entire Graduate & Professional Studies programs online or developing the faculty’s capacity to use the web in their courses

• Capital funds for renovations and the construction of new buildings to support living and learning on the Saint Joseph’s campus

Some corporations have chosen to support scholarships for students in Maine and New England through the Corporate Alliance Program for Scholarships (CAPS) of the Annual Fund. These grants provide scholarships in the name of businesses to deserving students. Corporations can set the criteria and are invited to an annual Scholarship Recognition Reception, which publicly honors the donor and the student.

Harold Alfond Foundation

Saint Joseph’s College is proud to have the name of Alfond associated with the greatest era of new building and change since the College moved to its Standish campus from Portland in 1956. Through the Harold Alfond Foundation’s $1 million initial challenge in 1997, along with additional related challenges and gifts, Saint Joseph’s was able to construct the first major addition to our campus, the Alfond Student Center. Last fall, the College dedicated a second building to Harold Alfond, in recognition of the second $1 million challenge that drew support for the first major academic construction in nearly 50 years — the 32-classroom, technologically modern Alfond Hall.

The buildings named for Mr. Alfond have become the standard by which everything else at the College is measured. Both showcase the College’s location on the shores of Sebago Lake overlooking the mountains — but more importantly, both are serving our growing student enrollment with excellent facilities that meet the campus life and academic needs of Saint Joseph’s students in the 21st Century.

MELMAC Education Foundation

Wendy Ault, Executive Director of the MELMAC Education Foundation, joins Professor Beth Richardson on the future site of the new Academic Center that will be established in Alfond Hall this fall as a result of a $225,000 grant by MELMAC.

Through the “Support Early Success in College” program, the MELMAC Education Foundation has provided a leadership gift for the Center, as well as support for a six-year project involving special mentoring of first year students by faculty. Working with Dr. Daniel Sheridan, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, Professor Richardson will serve as director for the new center and coordinator of the project, which is designed to retain a greater number of students to graduation.
