Distance learning FAQ

Wellehan Library staff look forward to helping you find and access the information that you need for your coursework. If your questions are not answered below, please do not hesitate to contact us—we’re glad to help!

How do I get help with my research?
Contact library staff by phone, e-mail, or in person at the library. We are always glad to answer questions and help with research, so let us know how we can be of assistance! We will also be adding Tutorials and How-Tos as part of our web site, so please check back!

How do I find books?
Use MINERVA, the library’s online catalog to find books in our collection. Please see “What do I need to know about Interlibrary Loan?” below to find out how to have us mail these books to you.

How do I find articles?
Use our databases to identify articles on your topic. Choose from the alphabetical or subject list of databases. Some databases provide full text online, while others provide only a citation and abstract. If the article you want is not available online, we will get it for you through Interlibrary Loan. Please see “What do I need to know about Interlibrary Loan?” below to learn more about this process.

I can’t get into this database. What do I do?
Only Saint Joseph’s current students, faculty, and staff are allowed off-campus access to Wellehan’s databases. (Our online catalog, MINERVA, is the exception). To show that you are part of the SJC community, you will need to enter your name (for example Joe Smith) and library barcode (a 14 digit number starting with 21912). Your library barcode may be found by logging on to the My Web Services portal.

When attempting to log into a database, I get an error mesage. Why is this?
If the message reads "Licensing agreements for these databases require that access be extended only to authorized users." Both EZProxy and certain databases send "cookies" when you connect to them to verify, during your session, that you are an authorized user. If your browser reports an error receiving a "cookie," it may be currently set to disallow cookies.

In Netscape, check: Edit Menu/Preferences/Advanced and make sure cookies are not disallowed.

In Internet Explorer, check: Tools Menu/Internet Options/Security Tab? and make sure your security level is medium (or above) or, if you have custom level, that cookies are not disabled.

If the message reads "Page can not be displayed" or "Page not found". When you receive these errors in your browser, it often points to browser incompatibility or firewall and DNS issues. To resolve the browser incompatibility, try a different browser other than the one you are currently using.

How do I know if you have this article online?
To find out whether an article in available online, click on Full-text journals on the library’s home page. This will take you to a database that will allow you to enter the publication’s title and will lead you to the article if it’s available.

How do I cite this source?
Please see the library’s helpful web sites or research tips web page for great links to writing bibliographies, citing sources, etc.

What do I need to know about Interlibrary Loan?
Please read this information carefully. If you have any further questions about how Interlibrary Loan works, please do not hesitate to contact us!

I received a pdf file from you, but it won’t open! What do I do?
To open a pdf file you will need Acrobat Reader. Click on the icon below to download it free.

When is the library open?
Regular and special library hours are listed on the library’s website. Please keep in mind that our hours do vary during summers and breaks, so it may be wise to doublecheck them if you plan to make a trip to the library.

What other resources are available to me?
In addition to the library services that Wellehan provides, you may also find it useful to see how your local public and academic libraries might be of assistance. While services vary, some will offer reference services, access to print journals, and/or allow you to use their electronic databases on site. Some may offer checkout privileges (you may have purchase a card) and/or Interlibrary Loan services. Use of these libraries is not meant to replace your relationship with us here at Wellehan Library, but to complement the services we provide.
