Professor Connolly, who teaches History and Political Science, focuses
his research on Irish history and the history of Irish-Americans. In November
of 2004, the University of Maine Press published a book of 10 essays he
edited, called They Change Their Sky: The Irish in Maine. The
book covers a range of topics, including Gaelic speakers in Portland,
the Irish experience in Lewiston, and the first rural settlement in Aroostook
County. It spans the time period from the earliest arrivals of the Scots-Irish
in the early 17th Century to the present day. The book includes an essay
written by Professor Connolly on longshoremen in Portland.
In October of 2005, Dr. Connolly presented papers at two
academic conferences:
- "A Bull Is Reared on Munjoy Hill: The Irish Upbringing
of John Ford in Portland, Maine," presented at The Fall New England
area meeting of the American Conference for Irish Studies held at the
Irish Cultural Centre in Canton.
- "Writing the History of a Diverse Ethnic Group in New
England: The Irish in Maine," presented at the annual meeting of
the New England Historical Association held at the University of Rhode
Island in Kingston, R.I.
Professor Connolly is the co-editor
of a book on John Ford, a famous film director who grew up in Portland,
Maine. It is published by McFarland Publishers of Jefferson, NC.
