Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education Requirements l Faculty l With this elementary education major... l A day in the life of a first grade teacher l When authors talk, children listen
The Elementary Education major is a State of Maine-approved program that is comprised of liberal studies, education methodology and a continuum of field experiences. One semester of student teaching is required for teacher certification, but not for graduation. Elementary Education students must maintain a C grade (73) in all courses required for the major. All methods courses must be completed prior to student teaching. The primary goal of the Education Department is the preparation of competent teachers. The program operates on the premise that theory becomes internalized when learned in context and applied. This objective is possible because of early, sequential and extensive field experiences. As juniors, students complete a full year of internship followed by student teaching in their senior year. Technology is also a prominent component of the Elementary Education major. The approved program leading to certification in Secondary Education consists of a liberal arts major (English, chemistry, history, mathematics, biology); completion of required education courses; and a semester of student teaching. Students need to plan their schedules carefully each year to meet the requirements for the program. Field experiences are required as part of the minor. Students need to pass the Praxis series, which is required for state certification in elementary and secondary education. Allstudents in education programs must pass Praxis I prior to senior student teaching. This process of admission assures both the student and the College that the applicant possesses the dispositions necessary for success in a program of professional preparation.
