Alumni profile
Ericka Prefontaine
Ericka Prefontaine '02, teacher
According to Ericka Prefontaine '02, teaching is one of the most rewarding professions. “I work to shape tomorrow's leaders,” she says. “There is nothing more satisfying than to see a student succeed or accomplish something great, and know that you played a role in this achievement. It's quite heartwarming, really.” An English teacher at Catherine McAuley High School in Portland, Maine, she also treasures the aha! moments. “It is so refreshing to watch as a student understands a concept or idea that she might not have realized before,” she says. Sharing in this excitement is priceless.

Ericka says teaching is much more than an 8 a.m. 2 p.m. job because teachers must take into account time for preparation, after school activities, one-on-one work with students, and the hours spent brushing up on the ever-changing demands of education. She teaches five 43-minute classes a day, with a block devoted to preparation time. After school, she serves as the moderator for the school newsletter and co-chairs the committee for the upcoming reaccreditation.

Student intern experience
Student intern Marybeth Keniston
Marybeth Keniston '06 English intern
As an intern in the marketing and public relations department at Saint Joseph's College, English major Marybeth Keniston proofread material for the Saint Joseph's College website and magazine. She also interviewed professors, current students and graduates of Saint Joseph's for new information to put on the school's website and for an article which appeared in the magazine.

“Interning with the marketing and public relations department allowed me to see that there are jobs available for English majors who are not necessarily interested in teaching, says Marybeth. She feels the internship not only helped her develop her writing skills but also her communication skills, which are a necessity in any career field.
