Student intern experience
Joseph Schacht '07

Joseph Schacht '07, interned at Union Street Athletics

I gained many things from the experience — a sense of responsibility and extensive knowledge of my field. I cannot express how much the personal trainer I interned under prepared me through his expertise and example. As a personal trainer I worked with 8-12 clients a day. I often spent two to three hours writing exercise programs specific to my clients needs and injury levels.

The thing I liked most about the experience was watching my clients succeed and achieve their goals. I learned that often it is just as rewarding for the trainer to see the client succeed as it is for the client. My biggest challenge was training an individual to pass the fitness test required to become a police officer. He lacked self-confidence and was predisposed to having a large midsection, but he was willing to give everything he had to reach his goal. He became a personal challenge for me. He passed his test on the second try and was extremely appreciative of the time and hard work I put into helping him achieve his goal.
