Student PIRGs are seeking candidate for their internship
program. PIRGs (Public Interest Research Groups) are independent
state-based student organizations that work together to address some
of the toughest issues, from environmental protection to making college
more affordable.
For over 35 years the Student PIRGS have organized around important
societal issues and have made real changes. We are now looking to recruit
new interns who will work closely with the trained PIRG staff to develop
their leadership skills, recruit other student volunteers, work with
the local media, and learn to organize winning campaigns.
Campaign Organizing: Organizing interns coordinate
a campaign on campus. Their role includes recruiting and training a
group of student volunteers and other interns to carry out a campus
campaign on one of our issue/project areas, organizing events, coordinating
petition drives and other outreach tactics, and learning to develop
other student leaders.
Overview
The Campaign Organizer is one of the top leadership positions in the
internship program, consistently filled with highly motivated students
with some degree of leadership experience. Project coordinators are
a driving force behind the PIRG chapter, and it is an ideal position
for student activists to learn how to run a campaign, expand skills,
and improve personal organization.
Responsibilities
Campaign Organizers run a PIRG project from beginning to end, working
closely with the following: Campus Staff, Project Leaders, Student Organizations
At the beginning of the semester, interns work with the above to set
goals for the semester, brainstorm project ideas, and produce a timeline. In
executing a project, responsibilities may vary, but may include:
- Planning and coordinating leadership on a particular project.
- Holding a news conference to urge decision makers to support our position.
Skills Required
Campaign Organizers must be highly motivated, energetic, and creative.
Interns must enjoy working with other people and have good communications

decision-makers. They use tactics such as postcard/letter drives, endorsement
campaigns, district meetings, student lobby days, and media attention.
In some states, this intern would also work with our field organizers
or lobbyists to assist in statewide lobbying campaigns.
Overview
Grassroots interns have a key role in each PIRG project. Grassroots
interns recruit and mobilize the hundreds of volunteers who make PIRG’s
campaigns successful. Grassroots interns supervise the letter writing
and petitioning, generating political pressure on out elected officials
to support our issues, and design the materials to educate the public
about the problems of our time. The position is open to students who
want to work with other people, have a direct impact on our elected
leaders’ decisions, and learn more about campaigning and politics.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities vary from project to project, but may include:
- Recruiting, training, and motivating volunteers to organize a call-in-day
to your target on a particular campaign.
- Coordinating petitioning drives.

particular campaign.

for an event such as the Hunger Cleanup or river cleanups.
Skills Required

working with other people, have good communications skills and a desire
to mobilize tons of students. No experience is required.
Media/Public Relations: Media interns develop
a media strategy for promoting PIRG to the public, educating the public
about PIRG issues, and using the media as a tactic in advocacy. Activities
include keeping and maintaining press lists, developing relations with
members of the local media, and maintaining visibility for PIRG events
on campus through local public service announcements, postering, and
other visibility.
Overview
Media and public relations are key to each PIRG project. Media/PR interns
work to educate the campus and surrounding community about the environment,
consumer protection and community service opportunities. The position
is open to students who want to learn how to work with the media, improve
writing and designing skills, and learn more about campaigning and politics.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities vary from project to project, but may include:
- Designing, editing, and producing a poster that encourages the campus
to attend an education forum.
- Organizing local newspapers, radio and television stations to cover
an event.
- Writing media advisories, press releases, and fact sheets.

or local newspaper and the Project Coordinators.

campaign.
Skills Required
Media interns must be highly motivated and energetic, enjoy working
with other people, have strong communication and writing skills, and
a willingness to learn.
Issue/Research: Research interns conduct surveys
or other research activities, write reports or fact sheets that document
environmental or consumer problems, and release reports to the media.
Overview
Research Interns are an important link to the educational mission of
PIRG’s campus program. The problems that our society faces seem
complex and daunting. Research interns take important information, cut
through the confusion, and present the information to the campus and
community in accessible and action-oriented ways. The position is open
to students wishing to learn more about a particular issue, improve
writing and communication skills, and learn more about the political
system.

database email addresses, write email updates to send to the chapter
listserv, ensure that chapter projects are posted to the organizational
website, build and maintain a chapter website, and get campus websites
and groups with common agendas linked to our website.
Overview
The internet has become a powerful organizing tool on college campuses.
Students are extremely internet-savvy and increasingly use the internet
as their primary medium for news, research, and communication. As a
result, the internet should be an important part of any PIRG chapter’s
organizing strategy. The Internet Organizing Intern’s role is
to oversee the chapter’s email lists and its visibility on the
web.

on the campus intranet.

Philosophy Towards Students/Interns:
A mentoring interaction with each intern and extern develops a mutually

conference calls, speaker phone, web and encouraged to visit here in
Boston. While they are not present we make certain they are a part of
the team virtually.
Our organization is growing and our internship/externship program has
always provided hands-on/project-driven opportunities to learn and make
real-world contributions.
Our interns are responsible for their own housing and expenses.
We require: a specific "email" cover letter to better
understand your interests, a resume, references (names and numbers)
and any collateral information. We will contact you within 7-10 business
days to discuss your application in greater detail if we see a potential
match. We always encourage applicants to follow up via email and/or
phone within 7-10 days after submitting their information.

You, as a Mainebiz intern, are no coffee-carrying
lackey. Instead, you quickly become a part of our six-person staff,
participating in editorial meetings, writing briefs, columns and --
if you're good -- feature stories, proofreading and occasionally throwing
a ball for Zoey, our office dog. We can't offer you cash, but we can
guarantee you'll leave with a handful of clips and a head full of journalism
know-how.
Want proof? Here's what Caitlin Elsaesser, a 2004 graduate of Carleton
College, wrote about her internship during the summer of 2003: "Mainebiz
gave me the perfect window into the world of journalism. During the
entire duration of my summer internship, I felt like I was a part of
the staff: I was included in all decision making meetings and often
asked for input. The staff at Mainebiz worked to accommodate my personal
goals for the summer."
What we want from you (there had to be a catch, right?) is a commitment
of 15-20 hours a week for 10 weeks. If your college or university offers
a one-month program, we can talk about that, too. Journalism majors
are great, but we're also happy to talk with other juniors and seniors
with solid, demonstrable writing experience.
Interested? Check out www.mainebiz.biz,
then email Editor Carol Coultas at ccoultas@mainebiz.biz.
We'll look at your writing samples, set up an interview and see where
it goes.
Mainebiz also offers internships in the production
and design department and the sales and marketing department.
For more information about a production internship, contact Art Director
Jan Holder at jholder@mainebiz.biz.

Project Vote Smart, a political research organization
started by former United States Presidents, Senators, and Congresspersons
from both major political parties, is inviting 4 students from Saint
Joseph's College to work and study at its unique Great Divide Research
Center.
With all living expenses funded by the Hearst Foundation,
this unique opportunity will place students at a high-tech research
facility at the Project's exclusive Great Divide Ranch. This extraordinary,
private research center is located high in the Montana Rocky Mountains
and is considered the most accurate, dependable source of political
information on elected officials and candidates by news organizations
nationwide.
The Program
The PVS National Internship is
a unique opportunity to become involved in American politics. Students
from across the nation, as well as international students seeking to
learn more about the American political system, come to Philipsburg,
Montana to help American citizens educate themselves about elected officials
and candidates. By providing this information in an easy, accessible
manner, Project Vote Smart believes that citizens can better defend
themselves from the political hype and misrepresentation characteristic
of present day political campaigns.
Interns play a crucial role at Project Vote Smart. In
fact, interns and volunteers make up the vast majority of our staff.
The individual talents, ideas and hard work of our interns have been
instrumental in the success of many of our most important programs.
The work that is done in the office is not glamorous.
Since we cover thousands of elected officials and candidates at various
levels of depth, often times it is tedious and monotonous. However,
if you are interested in making a genuine contribution to the improving
of democracy while working in a positive, idealistic, grassroots environment
we would love to have you join our team. The rewards for your efforts
will be great. As internships go, there is plenty of room to learn and
grow with the organization. A genuine effort is made to accommodate
your professional and educational goals. In fact, interns and volunteers
often return as staff members before moving on in their professional
careers.
The Location
The Great Divide
Ranch Retreat and Research Facility is located 30 minutes south of Philipsburg,
Montana inside the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. (two hours south of
Missoula and 1 ½ hours west of Butte). We are three miles from
the Continental Divide at 6,000 feet. One of the world's most famous
fly-fishing rivers, Rock Creek, runs along one side of the property
and Moose Lake borders the other. There are a myriad of outdoor activities
available to students year-round. Whether it's hiking, fishing or riding
our four horses in the summer or skiing, ice fishing or snowmobile in
the winter, there is always something fun to do. There are also tennis,
basketball and horseshoe facilities. The housing facilities consist
of lodges divided into rooms that sleep between two and six. Students
should expect to have at least two roommates. We have a full-time lodge
manager living on the property who prepares all meals. As part of living
in a group, students are required to help with weekly cleaning and maintenance
chores assigned by the lodge manager.
