What
to do With this Major Alumni profile Her job is to meet and assess each patient as they enter the operating room, help position and prep the patient and make sure each case runs smoothly. "I work closely with the anesthesia staff, pre-op unit, and the recovery unit," she says. Crystal enjoys caring for patients at such a critical time in their lives and likes being part of the operating room team. She also enjoys the flexible schedule (three 12-hour shifts per week). Student intern experience When arriving at the beginning of my shift, I receive my patient assignment. I sit in report with the prior shift's nurse where she will inform me of the status of the patient during her shift. I will go into the patient's room and introduce myself. I will inform him/her that I will be their nurse. I make sure to give any scheduled medications, make sure his/her pain level is controlled, and perform any procedures (i.e.: dressing change, catheter insertion, etc.), and keep them safe and free from injury. I will make sure to document all my assessments, vital signs, intake/output, and patient outcomes for the day. I am gaining professional nursing skills in task prioritization, patient assessment, medication assessment and administration, procedural technique, and collaborative teamwork. I really enjoy working with the patients and the staff at Mercy Hospital , Unit 4B. I enjoy seeing/learning new things and being able to ask as many questions as I can. I like to take advantage of looking things up throughout the day that I question about my patient. I don't feel comfortable if I don't know 100% of a medication, procedure, or intervention. Since I only have one, two or three patients per shift, I like to take advantage of that time to absorb all the information I can.
