The Registrar’s Office helps students find information on how to enroll in independent study and online courses, obtain educational records, and request official transcripts.

Independent Study
Independent Study enables student to work individually on project or reading program, earning one to four credits while working carefully with a supervising faculty member.

To be considered, the Independent Study Form must be completed, and the project plan must be approved with signatures from the supervising faculty member, the department chair, and the Office of Academic Affairs. In addition, a  3.0 (B) overall average is required for Independent Study.

Enrollment in Online Courses
Students registered in the four-year College may enroll in one Faculty-Directed Independent Study course each semester through the College's online programs under the following conditions:

  • a faculty advisor must verify that the student is a junior or senior and has a GPA of at least 2.5;
  • the student demonstrates proficiency to work independently;
  • the Office of Academic Affairs grants approval;
  • the student must complete course requirements within the campus semester (for spring semester: January 12 through May 1);
  • the students must submit one assignment and then receive faculty advisor feedback before submitting the next assignment.

It is the student's responsibility to contact the specific online program for course enrollment materials. The Faculty-Directed Independent Study Contract for an online program must be completed and signed by the department chair and/or faculty advisor.

Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities
Students can expand the list of courses available to them through the Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities (GPACU). Registration materials for GPACU courses are available at the Registrar's Office. Students interested in GPACU courses should meet with Jonathan Tuttle, associate registrar, to review the process and the availability of courses at other institutions.

Access to Educational Records
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) gives students the right to control access to their educational records. Information about FERPA is printed in the Student Handbook and the College Catalog, and a full copy of the act is available to you from the Office of the Registrar.
