  • ecology of marine food webs
  • marine pollution and ecosystem response

"My current research focuses on harmful algae or 'red tides' in the Gulf of Maine and their effects on marine food webs. In collaboration with colleagues from New England and Canada, I am investigating whether the feeding activities of plankton organisms may either allow the proliferation of red tide blooms of algae, or bring about the bloom's demise.

We are also tracking the trail of toxins produced by harmful algae through marine food webs, up to and including marine mammals that feed on plankton.

I also will be working with the Friends of Casco Bay, a local environmental protection organization, to assess the condition of Casco Bay. Student participation will be a prominent and crucial component in the successful development of this research project."

Just how healthy is the Gulf of Maine? SJC oceanographers talk about environmental issues coming to the forefront of public debate and policymaking for this vital ecosystem.

Targeting harmful red tide in Casco Bay Real-time data from a sophisticated buoy and field studies could lead to an understanding of how red tide develops in the Sound.
