Business faculty members include seasoned corporate professionals whose teaching includes practical knowledge learned in the real world of business. They have important business connections in Portland, Maine's largest city and economic hub - connections that prove very helpful in student networking for jobs at graduation time.
Professor Beth Richardson is a former lawyer and HR director for a multinational company. With her trademark commitment and energy, she developed a unique partnership with corporations that need her students' help with research and analysis of real-world issues. As the students provide research for companies, the program prepares students professionally, sometimes leading directly to jobs. So far, her students have helped eight large companies with research and analysis of recruitment strategies, social media, executive compensation and new employee orientation.
Marketing professor Ed Hellenbeck is known as a charismatic and dynamic teacher. "He is a man of integrity, honesty and compassion, and if you're willing to work hard, he will do anything he can to help you be successful .... Ed is one of the biggest reasons I decided to become a marketing major," said one student. When it comes to technology, Professor Antony Girlando works magic with Skype and ooVoo to create face-to-face contact with European mentors for students in his international business class who are trying to develop a product to market abroad.
Internships - whether during the summer or during the school year - often lead to jobs. Eighty percent of business majors intern at local and regional accounting firms, international businesses headquartered in the Greater Portland area, banks, consultant firms, advertising firms, manufacturers and service organizations.
Throughout all the academic disciplines offered in business, an emphasis on ethics is ever present. Indeed, every student at Saint Joseph's College takes a philosophy course that includes ethics, but the business major also requires a business ethics course.
