SJC Priorities: Invest in faculty

Support teaching excellence

SJC Priorities l Invest in students

There is an intense and increasing competition among colleges and universities for the best faculty. To attract and retain the best faculty possible and provide students the teaching excellence they deserve, Saint Joseph's will need to continue developing and expand career development opportunities for faculty, as well as establish named professorships.

Teaching is the priority of the faculty. The College’s 13:1 student/faculty ratio makes for an excellent learning environment where both teacher and student are engaged in scholarhip.

Saint Joseph’s faculty make a difference— a difference in the lives of their students, who come with lots of energy, determination and a strong desire to learn and succeed.

Mark Green, Associate Professor of Marine and Environmental Science

I want to know marine and lacustrine biogeochemistry!

With a National Science Foundation grant, Dr. Green helped discover why juvenile clams die in large numbers in Casco Bay. In the process he disproved a longstanding theory about clam predators, and gave environmental science students valuable experience as research assistants and co-authors of journal articles.

“I am particularly interested in how seasonal oscillations in temperature, carbon flux, activities of benthic organisms, and carbon decomposition rates and pathways inter-relate and cause extensive periods of undersaturation with respect to calcium carbonate in nearshore ocean sediments.”

Dr. Green also understands the importance of state-of-the art academic facilities. “I gave to the Building Knowledge Campaign because I knew the need for improved classrooms was crucial. Alfond Hall is an academic building that we can be proud of and that says, ‘academics is the priority at Saint Joesph’s.’ In order to attract high achieving students who are interested in an excellent laboratory experience as an undergraduate we will need to make improvements to our existing facilities.”
