Saint Joseph's College of Maine

Why Give?

Fulfill our Mission as a Catholic Liberal Arts College

Why Give? l High standards are expensive l The College has grown and expanded

We have a very broad and encompassing mission. Unlike some academic institutions that are able to focus on one or two specific areas of education, Saint Joseph's College is a liberal arts college that “…nurtures the intellectual, spiritual and social growth in students of all ages and all faiths within a values-centered environment.”

The bottom line is that our work is expensive! We don’t just provide classes for students to take – we nurture, support, and challenge our students’ academically, spiritually and socially. This provides an environment for them to succeed in all aspects of their education and lives.

Barbara (Pindar) Smith ‘53

Saint Joseph's College helped set the course of her life.

Mrs. Smith attended the College from 1949 to 1953, just before it moved to the Standish campus. It was known then as the College of Our Lady Mercy.

Mrs. Smith remembers the value and importance of moral and ethical principles. She also remembers receiving an excellent education with individual attention from faculty and staff, and forming strong friendships with the students.

“The moral and ethical principles instilled by my parents were certainly strengthened at the College. A fine education and a recommendation from the Dean to a recruiter enabled me to start the climb to the top of my field at the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. And above all, Saint Joseph's provided lifelong friendships.”

As an alumna, Mrs. Smith feels she has a responsibility to support the College that helped set the course of her life. “I believe it is my responsibility to contribute to Saint Joseph’s to the best of my ability in the hope that such support will enable the College to continue to grow and provide assistance to current and future students.”

Susan (Hall) Walker, Program Assistant, Financial Aid

Saint Joseph’s College—a place of family memories.

Sue’s affiliation with Saint Joseph’s spans over 4 decades and includes three generations of her family.

As a self proclaimed “flower child” of the 1960’s she attended CCD classes with her brothers in Mercy Hall and attended Mass in the Chalet in Saint Joseph’s Hall. In 1975 she enrolled as a student and studied Elementary Education.

Nearly 25 years later her son, Scott ’05, enrolled at Saint Joseph’s. Sue was excited that Scott decided to come to Saint Joseph’s, “the Orientation and Parent’s Weekend was awesome and it felt good to be back at the College.”

So good that Sue applied for a position in the Office of Financial Aid and started in 2001. In 2003 her second son, Andrew, followed in the footsteps of his mother and brother and enrolled at the College.

And her Saint Joseph’s family keeps getting bigger. Sue is busy these days helping Scott and future daughter-in-law, Anna 03’, plan their fall 2005 wedding. Anna’s parents, Jim and Kathy Walker ’74, met at the College, and have been married 30 years this year.

Ask Sue why she contributes to the College. She smiles and responds, “It just feels so right. I can’t tell you how much this place means to me and my family.”
