In light of the recent College Board decision to eliminate the AP Latin Literature course after the 2009 exam, this course will be changed to include the AP Vergil syllabus AND all aspects of teaching a Latin AP course. For those who want to work with Catullus, Horace, Ovid and/or Cicero, their needs will be met. The elements for teaching an advanced Latin course, whether AP or not, can appropriately include these authors. I had planned to provide the opportunity to read and work with a large number of Catullus poems from the syllabus, with special attention to strategies for teaching and grading short essays, grading literal translations, and ways to check on homework and content that give variety to instruction. This plan is now reconfigured to include Vergil; it will be a combined AP Latin Literature and AP Vergil course offering.

A variety of texts will be available to sample, though teachers are encouraged to bring the ones that they plan to use. The course will benefit both new and experienced AP teachers as well as teachers of advanced Latin courses that do not conclude with the AP exam. Throughout the week teachers will work with Catullus and Vergil and other authors of their choice to compile lessons for an assortment of authentic text, write test questions, use scoring rubrics and essay templates and learn how to fold all of these into their teaching. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop computer if possible. Those with questions are encouraged to send inquiries to: jmcrooker@aol.com
