STANDISH,
ME – Saint Joseph’s College played their home opener on
Wednesday night versus in-state opponent University of New England and
earned a hard fought victory, 76-66. The Monks featured four players
who scored in double digits and were led by FY Chris
Davis (New York, NY) who
poured in 16 points with 7 boards and 3 blocked shots.
The Saint Joseph's College crowd was rowdy in the home opener, providing the Monks with a definitive home court advantage. SO Ray Eatmon (Huntington, NY) got SJC going early with a tip in hoop and JR Mitch Ouellet (Fort Kent, ME) nailed a 3-pointer to take an early 5-2 lead. The Nor’easters gained momentum with 11:40 remaining in the first half with a perfectly executed 3-2 fast break with Isaac Stickney. Tom Belmonte hit a 3-pointer to put UNE up 17-13. St. Joe’s regained the lead, 27-25, at the 7 minute mark when SO Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, MA) hit paydirt on a three point shot. Chris Davis hit four consecutive shots to end the half and put the Monks up 34-32. St. Joe’s seemed determined to not relinquish the lead for the duration of the game and came out firing to begin the second half. Ray Eatmon scored a quick 5 points for the Monks as he scored on a layup and a free throw to convert a 3 point play and added another basket to put the team up 41-36. Later in the half, SO Rashon Jones (Bridgeport, CT) would score on consecutive possessions and FY Alonso Davis (Richmond, VA) tipped in a rebound to give the Monks a 53-44 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Rashon Jones hit 4 of 5 shots in the last two minutes of the game to finish with a career high 14 points. Jones was 6-7 from the charity stripe and grabbed 6 rebounds in the victory. Ray Eatmon added 13 pts and 8 rebounds and Mitch Ouellet scored 12 pts in the game for the Monks. JR Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) added 5 blocked shots, 5 boards and 3 steals. Jaykyri Simpson led the Nor’easters with 17 points and Johnnie Jefferson achieved a double-double in the loss with 15 points and 10 rebounds. St. Joe’s record improves to 1-2 while the University of New England falls to 2-3 on the season. Saint Joseph's College travels to Newton, MA to take on GNAC foe Lasell College on Saturday, 12/1 @ 2:00 PM.
