1/15/08– Murphy Honored by GNAC

STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced their 12/17-1/13 weekly honors selections and junior forward Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) has been named the GNAC Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week.

Murphy helped lead the Monks to a 3-0 record, 2-0 in GNAC play, during the reporting period. The junior forward scored 30 points in an overtime victory over GNAC opponent Norwich on 1/8 and scored 9 of his points in the extra frame to help secure the win. He also scored 20 points in an upset victory over NESCAC opponent Colby College on 1/3. Murphy scored 17 points with 8 boards and 5 steals in a GNAC victory over Albertus Magnus College on 1/10. Murphy, who led the all NCAA divisions in steals in 06-07 with 4.2 per game, grabbed 13 steals in the 3 games to increase his season average to 2.9 per game.

Murphy shares the weekly honor with junior Rob Williams-Hinton from Emmanuel College. Williams-Hinton led the Saints to a 3-0 week, leading the team in scoring in all three games. Williams-Hinton shot 22-45 (49%) from the floor and 7-9 (78%) from the line and averaged 7.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

Murphy averaged 22.3 points, 6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.3 steals per game in the three games played during the GNAC reporting period.

Murphy currently leads the Monks in scoring (16.0 PPG), steals (2.9 SPG), free-throw percentage (80.6%) and is second in rebounds (5.6 RPG) and assists (3.5 APG).

The Monks have rattled off four straight wins after a 1-4 start to the season. The team's record now stands at 5-4, 3-1 in GNAC play. The Royal Blue is set to play four consecutive GNAC games in the coming week against Suffolk College, Lasell College, Mount Ida College and Emmanuel College.
