STANDISH, ME - The last game of the Merry Monk Classic
featured the Green Mountain College Eagles and host Saint Joseph's College.
The Eagles ended the back and forth battle on top, 51-48. Both teams
won their opening games on Friday night in the classic format, with
Green Mountain topping UMPI, 49-47, and St. Joe's besting the College
of St. Joseph, 66-60.
Green Mountain was led offensively in the game by forwards Millicent
Hopper and Christina Chamberlin as both scored 17 points in the Eagles
win. Chamberlin also grabbed 14 rebounds to earn a double-double. The
Eagles' Emma Buckley added 10 boards and 6 blocked shots in the winning
effort.
SO Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME/McAuley HS) sank
six 3-pointers in the game and topped all SJC scorers with her season
and game high 20 points. She also added 8 rebounds in the game. Allison
Miner led her team in boards with 9 in the losing bid.
Both teams started off slowly, with neither squad scoring in the first
two and a half minutes. SJC forward Allison Miner (Pembroke,
NH) ended the drought, hitting two free throws after being fouled by
Eagles forward Millicent Hopper. FY Erin Cartwright (Acton,
MA) scored for St. Joe's to put her team up 4-1 and JR Alysn
Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) stole a pass from GMC's Brittany Holden,
drove down the court and sank a lay-up to make the score 6-1.
St. Joe's would make the lead 18-16 with eight minutes remaining in
the half after JR Liz Jordan (Sandwich, MA) hit a jumper.
Three minutes later the Eagles went on an 11-0 run, led by 7 points
from forward Christina Chamberlin, to make the GMC lead 31-23 going
into halftime.
Erin Cartwright ignited the start of the second half
offensively for St. Joe's, hitting two jump shots to make the score
31-28 GMC and bring her team within three points. Carolyn Freeman
sank two 3-pointers to maintain the three point deficit with the score
37-34 at the 12:36 mark. The Eagles Katie Jablonski countered Freeman's
three with one of her own to increase GMC's lead to six.
On the next St. Joe's possession, with the shot clock winding down,
Liz Jordan would beat the buzzer with a jumper and
Freeman would drain yet another 3 ball on the following
trip down the court to pull within a point, 42-41 GMC.
Freeman continued her hot hand from three-point land
when she give St. Joe's the lead, 47-46, with less than 4 minutes left.
SJC couldn't hold onto the lead, however, as the Eagles' Brittany Holden
would hit both of her free throw attempts and Millicent Hopper would
hit a jumper to put GMC up 50-47. Both teams made single free throw
attempts to make the final score 51-48, Green Mountain.
Both St. Joe's and Green Mountain now have a season record of 4-2.
