Association of Division III Independents Names 2005 All-Independent Softball Teams
KANSAS CITY, MO. -- The first All-Independent Softball Teams were named today by the Association of Division III Independents. Division III softball coaches at the Association's member institutions selected the players. Saint Joseph's had four players receive this recognition, seniors Darcy Lee, Kahler Dowling and Helene Liaci and first-year Debi Drown. AD3I All-Independent Second Team Outfield - Darcy Lee, Senior, Saint Joseph's College (Windham, ME) AD3I All-Independent Team Honorable Mention Pitcher - Kahler Dowling, Senior, Saint Joseph's College (Augusta, ME) Second base - Helene Liaci, Senior, Saint Joseph's College (Clifton, NJ) Outfield - Deb Drown, Freshman, Saint Joseph's College (Gorham, ME) The Association of Division III Independents consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in seven sports in 2004-05. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. For the first time, the Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it has announced All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year. More information

5/4/05 Bates takes two from Saint Joe's STANDISH, MAINE – The Saint Joseph's College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Bates College on Wednesday. The Bobcats won the first contest, 3-0, and the second 13-0. Bates finishes the 2005 campaign with a 12-10 record. The Lady Monks end the season with a 12-25 record. Game 1 The top of the line-up for Bates fueled the offense in game one. Hitters 1-4, accounted for seven hits, three runs scored and one RBI. The three runs were more than enough support for Bates pitcher, Sarah Klenakis, (Springfield, MA), who pitched a complete game shutout for the win giving up only three hits, two walks and recording four strikeouts.
Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) had two hits for Saint Joe's and senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) pitched a complete game in the loss giving up eight hits, 0 walks and recording six strikeouts. Game 2 The Bobcats recorded 16 hits and scored 13 runs to win game two in six innings (10-run rule). Kyla Decato (Paris, ME) led Bates at the plate, going 4-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored. In addition to Decato, the Bobcats had five other players with two hits each to help the offense. Sarah Klenakis, (Springfield, MA), earned her second shutout win of the day for the Bobcats giving up six hits, no walks and recording two strikeouts. Senior Kahler Dowling (August, ME) and sophomore Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) each recorded two hits for the Lady Monks. Senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) pitched 5 1/3 innings in the loss giving up 15 hits, 13 runs, one walk and recording five strikeouts.
4/30/05 Bowdoin edges Saint Joe's
STANDISH, MAINE – Bowdoin College (19-10) used six hits and five Saint Joe's errors to edge the Lady Monks (12-20) by a score of 4-3 on senior day at Ward Park. The game was tied 1-1 after 5 innings with solid pitching performances by Bowdoin starter, Caitlin Polistena (Mattituck, NY) and Saint Joe's hurler Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME). Bowdoin scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning on three hits, a sac fly and one Saint Joe's error. Saint Joe's battled back with two runs in the bottom of the inning off new Bowdoin pitcher, Emily Nelson (Pasadena, CA), to tie the game 3-3. In the seventh inning, Bowdoin forced one run in on one hit and two untimely Saint Joe's errors to make the score 4-3. Nelson held the Lady Monks off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win for Bowdoin College.
Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) had 2 hits for Saint Joe's and senior Kahler Dowling pitched a complete game in the loss giving up six hits, 0 walks and recording 1 strikeout.
The second game of the double header was cancelled in the third inning due to weather and unplayable field conditions. The game will not be rescheduled.
4/21/05 St. Joe's Splits with Southern Maine STANDISH, ME – USM pitcher senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, MA) earned her 12th win and set a new school record with 14 strikeouts in a 9-1 win over St. Joe's. The USM single-season strikeout record was 149, set by Henderson in 2002 and she finished the game with a season total of 161. After four scoreless innings, the Huskies (16-12-1) plated 3 runs in the fifth inning. St. Joe's (11-19) made it 3-1 in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) singled and sophomore Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) moved her to third with a double. Martin went on to score on a passed ball. Southern Maine added another run in the sixth as junior Caitlyn Stivaletta (Wells, ME) singled and freshman Dawn Ross (Gray, ME) tripled to score Stivaletta. The Huskies scored 5 runs on 3 hits in the seventh inning including a 3 run homer by pinch hitter junior Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, ME). Martin and Morrison had the only hits for St. Joe's and senior pitcher Kahler Dowling (6-9) had two strikeouts. Senior Ally Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) earned her fifth win of the season in a 3-2 win in game 2. USM junior Caterina Riitano drops to 2-5 with the loss. Sophomore Jamie Morrison hit a solo home run to give St. Joe's (12-19) a 1-0 lead in the second inning. In the third inning on a two-out rally, junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) singled and senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) doubled to score Morton and put St. Joe's up 2-0. The Huskies (16-13-1) tied the score in the sixth inning as sophomore Danica Martin (Bridgton, ME) singled and junior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME) tripled and scored on an error. The game went to an extra inning and each team had a turn with a runner placed on second base. Ross was placed on second for USM and Stivaletta moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Kristin McGovern (Gorham, ME) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throw as Ross was thrown out at home. Junior Leanne Morton was placed on second in the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Lee struck out and the game ended as Liaci reached on an error that scored Morton. St. Joe's plays in a two-day tournament at Colby College beginning Saturday, 4/23.
4/20/05 Babson Sweeps Saint Joseph's, 1-0 and 14-6 BABSON PARK, MA - The Babson College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College today, 1-0 and 14-6. Babson, ranked 10th in the nation by the NFCA, improved to 29-5 with the wins, while the Monks slipped to 11-18. Babson outhit Saint Joseph's 12-3 in game one, but the contest came down to the Beavers' final at-bat. With the score tied at 0-0, sophomore Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left-center — her third hit of the game. She then moved to third on a flyout to right by sophomore Darcy Lantz (Kingston, Pa.) and scored the game-winning run when sophomore Alex Lazar (Milton, Mass.) ripped a single off the first baseman's glove and into right field. Junior Meg Gaskell (Uxbridge, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Beavers — her fifth of the season — to improve her record to 10-1 overall. She surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out two in seven innings of work. The junior righthander pitched her way out of numerous jams in the contest, as three of the four baserunners she allowed were stranded in scoring position. Saint Joseph's senior Helene Liaci (Clifton, N.J.) hit a one-out triple in the fourth, but was left there when Gaskell induced a fly out to center and a groundout back to the mound. The Monks then put a runner on second with one out in the sixth, but Gaskell got the next two batters to ground out to preserve the shutout. Senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, Maine) also pitched well in game one for Saint Joe's, allowing only one run despite giving up 12 hits. Babson jumped all over the visitors in the third inning of game two, sending 13 people to the plate and scoring eight runs. Senior co-captain Kara Courtney (Northampton, Mass.) and first-year Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) both hit two-run doubles in the inning, while senior co-captain Jamie Bowman (West Bridgewater, Mass.) also drove in a pair with a single to right. Saint Joe's then got two runs back on two hits, a walk, and an error in the fourth, but the Beavers came right back with two in the bottom of the inning, capped by an RBI groundout by junior Erica Barry (Malden, Mass.) that plated classmate Alison Carey (Rocky Hill, Conn.) from third to give Babson a 10-2 advantage. Trailing by eight, the Monks got back into the game with four runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a run-scoring single by Liaci and an RBI groundout by first-year Megan Farrell (Abington, Mass.). The score remained 10-6 until the bottom of the sixth, when Babson plated four runs to end the contest. Sophomore Robyn Woodruff (Clifton, N.J.) doubled in two of those runs and then scored on a basehit by Courtney, while the final run came home on an outfield error. Sophomore Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.) allowed one run in four innings to earn the win for Babson, as she improved to 7-2 overall. Courtney finished game two with three hits, while Cartullo and Lazar each had three hits in game one. Liaci and junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, Maine) each had three hits on the afternoon for Saint Joe's.
4/19/05 St. Joe's Splits at Farmington FARMINGTON, ME – St. Joe's (11-15) scored five runs in the sixth inning to secure a 7-3 win at Farmington (11-8). Senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) earned her sixth win of the season. In the first inning, freshman Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) gave St. Joe's a 1-0 lead, scoring after a single and stolen base. Junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) also singled in the inning. Farmington had two hits and went up 2-1 in the bottom of the first. Senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) hit a solo home run to tie the game in the fourth and Farmington regained the lead in the fifth, scoring one run on two hits. Singles by Morton, senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME), Dowling and sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) along with two walks put St. Joe's up 7-3 in the sixth. Game 2 Farmington sophomore Stephanie Moriarty (Sandwich, MA) struck out 8 and allowed just one hit to give UMF a 9-0 win over St. Joe's (11-16) in game 2. After three and a half scoreless innings, Farmington (12-8) went up 5-0 in the fourth on 4 hits and 2 errors. The lead was extended with a run in the fifth and 3 runs in the sixth . Sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) had the only hit of the game for St. Joe's in the sixth inning. St. Joseph's College plays at Babson College (MA) on Wednesday, April 20, at 3 PM.
4/17/05 Saint Joe's bats come alive to sweep Newbury, 8-0 and 11-4 Farrell hits another sixth inning 2 RBI double to end game one STANDISH, MAINE – Freshman Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) made the most of her pinch hit opportunity in the sixth inning by crushing a double and driving in junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) and senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) to end the game by the eight-run rule, 8-0. Senior captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) recorded her fifth win with 3 strikeouts, as St. Joe's recorded a shut-out against visiting Newbury College. St. Joe's jumped out 2-0 in the first inning as Morton walked and senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) drove her home with a triple. Dowling singled and Lee scored on an error. The lead was extended in the fourth inning as 4 runs were scored on 4 Nighthawk errors to make it 6-0. Freshman Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) had the lone hit of the inning. In the sixth inning, Morton and Liaci reached on errors to set up Farrell for a repeat of her Friday night 2-out performance. With two outs, Farrell stepped to plate and connected on another double to make it 8-0. Freshman Michaela Lynch Attleboro, MA) had 2 hits for Newbury (2-11) and pitched five and a half innings. Game 2 After equaling their longest winning streak of the season (3) with a win in game one, St. Joe's cruised to a fourth win in a row in a one-sided 11-4 victory over Newbury College (2-12). Newbury came out swinging in the first inning and scored two quick runs but St. Joe's answered back in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-2. Drown singled, Morton walked, Lee singled and Farrell reached on a botched fielder's choice that scored Drown. Senior captain Ally Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) walked to score Morton and Dowling hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Lee. Sophomore Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) walked and Farrell scored on a passed ball. The final run of the inning was scored as sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) singled to score Ferguson. Ferguson singled in the second inning to score Liaci and in the fourth inning Lee doubled and was sent home on a Liaci triple. Ferguson reached on an error and Liaci scored. Newbury showed signs of life in the fifth inning as freshman Alise Jacquet (Holliston, MA) went to third on a St. Joe's error and scored on a single by junior Ashley Challinor (Darien, CT). Singles by Morton, Liaci and Farrell would score Morton and make it 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth. St. Joe's (10-15) scored two more runs in the sixth inning on a triple by Morton and a wild pitch. Lee had three hits while Morton and Liaci both had two. Senior Ally Ferguson earned her fourth win of the season. Sophomore Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out two batters in one-and-a-half innings pitched and freshman Amanda Melendy Danville, VT) struck out two in one and a third innings pitched. The team returns to action on Tuesday 4/19 for a 3:30 doubleheader at Maine Farmington.
4/15/05 St. Joe's Sweeps Husson Saint Joseph 's College improves to 8-15 with a 3-2 and 10-2 sweep of Husson College on Friday night Game One STANDISH, ME - The St. Joe's sophomores took control in the fourth inning after three and a half scoreless innings. Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) drove in two runs with a single after Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) singled with two outs and Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) earned a walk. Husson answered back in the sixth inning as sophomore Nicole Manzo reached on an error and freshman Shawna Bell hit a double to score Manzo. Senior Nicole Munroe singled and Bell scored to even the score at 2-2. In the seventh inning, sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) reached on an error and freshman Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) single and moved Roy to third base. Junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) hit the game winning single to score Roy. Senior captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) was the winning pitcher in game one, striking out 5 batters; Deb Drown went 2 for 4. Game Two Husson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two as St. Joe's committed 3 errors and 2 wild pitches. The bats came alive for St. Joe's in the bottom of the third as they scored 5 runs and registered six hits. Morrison hit a double and sophomore Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) walked. Freshman Amanda Coburn (Salem, ME) came in to pinch run for Morrison and Drown singled. Morton doubled and drove in three runs. Senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) hit a triple and scored Morton and freshman Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) drove Liaci in with a single. Dowling singled and the inning ended with the score 5-2 as Morrison, up for a second time in the inning, flew out to right field. St. Joe's added to the lead in the fourth inning as Roy and Drown singled and senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) drove Roy in with a single to make it 6-2. In the fifth inning, Dowling and Morrison singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Roy singled and drove in two more runs to give St. Joe's a commanding 8-2 lead. Freshman Megan Farrell hit a 2 RBI double in the sixth inning to score Drown who had singled and Morton who had reached on a walk. This hit ended the game at 10-2 due to the eight-run rule.
4/13/05 PSU Softball posts back-to-back shutouts over Saint Joseph's PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University softball pitchers Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass.) and Rose Eaton (Concord, N.H.) tossed consecutive shutouts Wednesday afternoon to lead the Panthers to a non-conference sweep of Saint Joseph's College, 8-0 and 2-0, at D&M Park. Jeffs spun a perfect game in the opener, which was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. She struck out 10 batters for her second no-hitter in less than a week. Eaton allowed only two singles in the nightcap while striking out eight. For St. Joe's, freshman Deb Drown (Gorham, Maine) and junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, Maine) had singles in the second game for the Monks. Saint Joseph's, 6-13 overall, returns home to host Husson Friday at 5:00 p.m.
4/11/05 Saint Joseph's Downed by Salem State SALEM, MA – Salem State College defeated St. Joe's 11-3 and 9-3 in a double header at Salem on Monday. The Vikings recorded 26 hits in the two games. In game 1, Saint Joseph's (6-13) took a 3-run lead in the second inning, but Salem put up six runs in the third to take the lead for the remainder of the game. In the second game, the Vikings (7-4) took a 5-1 lead with three runs in the second and two in the third. Senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) had three hits, including a triple for St. Joe's. St. Joe's plays a double header at Plymouth State (NH) at 4 PM on Wednesday 4/13.
4/7/05 St. Joe's Bitten by Terriers STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph 's College lost both games to Thomas College in their home opener today at Ward Field by scores of 2-1 and 4-0. Game 1 Saint Joe's (5-9) dropped the first game 2-1 as Thomas held a 7-5 advantage in hits. Senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) went 2-for-3 with a double, and sophomore Tessa Grindle (Bangor, ME) recorded a double for St. Joe's. Sophomore Kayla Beaudoin (Augusta, ME) scored the first run of the game to give Thomas a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Beaudoin hit a double and was moved to third on a single by junior Jen Lane (Fairfield, ME). First Year Kim Denbow (Readfield, ME) singled and notched the RBI as Beaudoin scored. Saint Joseph's answered back in the sixth inning as senior captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) reached on an error and Helene Liaci doubled, moving Dowling to third. Sophomore Jamie Morrison Auburn, ME) reached on a fielder's choice and Dowling's pinch runner, freshman Danielle Caron (Auburn, ME) was thrown out at home. Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second while Morrison advanced to third and Liaci scored on an error. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of 7 innings and both teams were given an opportunity to begin the 8th inning with a runner on second base. Junior Jen Couture (Waterboro, ME) was placed on second for Thomas and was quickly moved to third on a sacrifice by senior Jasmine Carey (Manchester, ME). Junior Brindi Riley (Raymond, ME) reached first and Couture scored the game winning run on an error. Dowling was placed on 2nd in the bottom of the eighth and Liaci moved her to third with a sacrifice. Dowling was thrown out at home after Morrison grounded out to third. Game 2 Thomas pitcher junior Joy Ireland (Clinton, ME) limited St. Joe's (5-10) to just 3 hits and recorded 2 doubles en route to a 4-0 victory. Couture scored for Thomas in the 3rd inning and Ireland doubled and scored in the 4th inning to go up 2-0. Ireland hit a 2 RBI double in the 5th inning scoring Beaudoin and Riley to give Thomas a commanding 4-0 lead. Senior captain Helene Liaci gave St. Joe's some hope in the 6th inning as she smashed a triple with two outs, but she was left stranded as Morrison flew out to left field. Saint Joe's will play a double header at Brandeis University (MA) on Sunday at 1:00.
3/12/05 St. Joe's Drops Final Two Florida Games FORT MYERS, FL – Saint Joseph's College lost to RPI and Montclair State at the Lee County Sports Complex today to end their spring tournament with a 5-6 record. RPI Wins 7-1 Nikki Dooby struck out 10 St. Joe's batters to earn her second win of the season. RPI (2-1) scored quickly as lead-off hitter Liz Vitaliano singled and Courtney Sweeney moved her over with a bunt. Steph Varek singled and Vitaliano advanced to third. Varek stole second, Katherine Valenta singled and Vitaliano scored the run. After another RPI run in the second inning, St. Joe's scored their only run of the game in the third inning. Junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) singled and senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) walked. Senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) drove in Morton with a single. RPI scored 2 runs in the fourth, one in fifth, and two more in the sixth inning. Dooby struck out the first two batters of the 7th inning. Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) gave the Lady Monks hope with a single but the game ended as senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) flew out to center field. Montclair State Defeats St. Joe's 12-0 The St. Joe's softball team knew they were up against one of the strongest teams in the tournament and this was quickly reinforced as the first two Montclair batters crushed solo home runs. Montclair (2-0) went on to score 8 runs in the first inning and their defense was also solid, robbing the Lady Monks of base hits all afternoon. Sophomore Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) was the lone base runner for St. Joe's after reaching on a walk in the second inning. Montclair added 4 more runs in the third to make it 12-0 and the game ended in the top of the fifth when St. Joe's was unable to score and avoid the 8 run rule.
3/11/04 Saint Joseph's Drops Night Game FORT MYERS, FL – Saint Joseph 's College (5-4) lost to Cedarville 10-2 in a night game at the Lee County Sports Complex tonight. Cedarville (7-1) had 4 singles and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. This would be the only scoring for either team until the fourth inning. St. Joe's started the 4 th inning with a single by senior Kahler Dowling ( Augusta , ME ) and senior Helene Liaci ( Clifton , NJ ) reached on a walk. Dowling scored as sophomore Jamie Morrison ( Auburn , ME ) singled and stole second base. First year Deb Drown ( Gorham , ME ) drove Liaci in with a single. Cedarville scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth with 2 singles, a double and Jessica Honeycutt homered to make it 8-2. The Lady Jackets extended their lead with two more runs in the fifth inning and the game ended due to the 8 run rule.
3/11/05 Saint Joseph's Drops Two CAPE CORAL, FL – Saint Joseph's College (5-3) lost to Ursinus College and Eastern Nazarene College today at the Cape Coral Sports Complex. GAME 1 Ursinus pitcher Mallory Greene recorded 9 strike outs and helped the Bears to a 16-0 victory over the Lady Monks. Mary Reid led the Bears with 3 singles and 3 runs scored. First year students Lindsey Roth (Saco, ME) and Amanda Melendy (Danville, VT) had their collegiate debuts on the mound for St. Joe's. Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) ripped a triple and senior Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) and senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) managed singles but Ursinus (7-2) kept the bases clear for most of the game. GAME 2 Saint Joe's led for most of the game but failed to prevent a major come back by Eastern Nazarene in the 7th inning, losing 9-8. The Lady Monks held a commanding 8-2 lead after 6 innings. Liaci notched another home run and a single and Lee went 3 for 4 with 3 singles. Sophomore Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) hit a double and 2 singles while both senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) and junior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) had two singles apiece. A combination of base hits and untimely errors led to an unfortunate turn of events for St. Joe's in the bottom of the 7th as the Crusaders scored 7 runs for the come from behind victory.
3/10/05 Saint Joseph's Tops Curry FORT MYERS, FL – Saint Joe's (5-1) knocked off Curry College 2-0 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Florida today. St. Joe's held off a tough Curry squad that went 38-6 last season and had started the season undefeated. Winning pitcher senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) recorded her first shut-out of the season with the help of a tremendous St. Joe's defensive effort. After 6 scoreless innings, the Lady Monks went to work in the top of the 7th inning. Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) singled and first year Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) moved Lee over with her second sacrifice bunt of the game. Sophomore Jamie Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) singled and Lee moved to 3rd base. Daugherty stole second and junior Leanne Morton reached first on a fielder's choice as Lee was thrown out at the plate. Sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) singled and Daugherty scored the winning run. Ferguson reached on an error and Morton scored the insurance run. In the bottom of the 7th, Morton robbed Jackee Joyce of a sure single with a quick grab and a put-out. Senior Kahler Downling (Augusta, ME) made a spectacular over the shoulder catch at the fence for the second out of the inning. 3/10/05 St. Joe's Defeats Wesleyan
Lead-off hitter sophomore Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) singled and senior tri-captain Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. Senior tri-captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) stepped up to the plate with two outs and hammered a 2 run shot out of the park over left field. Molly Gaebe hit a double in the 7th inning and scored Wesleyan's (0-2) only run of the game on a passed ball. Losing pitcher Karla Hargrove settled down after the first inning and registered 9 strike-outs. Senior tri-captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) hit a double and recorded 9 strike-outs in her second victory of the season. Liaci finished 2 for 3 with a single and a 2 run homer and sophomore Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) had two walks and a single.
3/8/05 Saint Joseph's Suffers First Loss of Season FORT MYERS , FL – Saint Joseph's College (3-1) recorded its first loss of the season in a 9-1 loss to Anna Maria College (4-2). Anna Maria jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after singles by Jane Staley, Kd Mungovan, Tina Oliveri and a double by Jen DeCambra. Senior Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) managed a single in the first inning but would be the only St. Joe's player to get on base in the first two innings. Amy Makynen doubled and scored for Anna Maria after a sacrifice by Staley and a single by Suzie Yanovitch in the second inning. In the third, sophomore Jamie Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) singled and scored after a single by senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) to make it 4-1. Anna Maria was held scoreless in the inning. Four singles and a St. Joe's error gave Anna Maria 5 more runs in the fourth inning. The Lady Monks were down 9-1 and were unable to rally in the fifth inning and the game ended due to the 8 run rule.
3/8/05 Saint Joseph's Cruises Past Northland
Winning pitcher senior Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) led St. Joe's with a double, 2 walks and 4 runs scored. First year Deb Drown had a single, 2 walks and 3 runs scored while sophomore Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) had 2 singles and 2 walks. Northland jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning after a single by Melissa Grego, a double by Katie Zaban and singles by Alicia Homolu and Julie Deplaines. The Lady Monks responded quickly, taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. First year Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) drove in a run on a sacrifice to right field after Northland walked four and hit a batter. St. Joe's scored 7 more runs in the 2nd inning to stretch the lead to 10-2. Desplaines and Lindsey Lesmeister hit doubles for Northland and Desplaines scored their final run of the game in the third inning. Nine more walks by Northland and another hit batter led to an 11 run fourth inning for St. Joe's, making the score 21-3. The game ended in the fifth inning due to the 8 run rule after sophomore Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out two Northland batters.
3/7/05 Saint Joseph's Starts off Strong CAPE CORAL, FL – The Saint Joseph's College (2-0) Women's softball team earned its second win today at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Cape Coral Florida. The Lady Monks survived a 5 run fifth inning and defeated Emmanuel College 11-8. Senior tri-captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) led
St. Joe's, going 3 for 4 with a walk, a home run, a triple and 3 runs
scored. First year Megan Farrell Saint Joe's erupted in the 4th inning, scoring 8 runs. Liaci started the inning with a walk and also hit a home run later in the inning. Emmanuel scored 5 runs in the fifth inning and made it 8-5. The Lady Monks finished the 5th inning scoring two runs to stretch the lead to 10-5. Emmanuel (0-3) picked up 3 more runs in the 6th inning as four players singled. Liaci hit a triple in the 6 th to give St. Joe's an 11-8 lead.
3/7/05 Saint Joseph's Wins Season Opener
Senior leadership was the story today as tri-captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) came out firing for St. Joe's, recording 2 of her 7 strike-outs in the first inning. The Lady Monks scored two runs in the first inning as senior tri-captain Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, ME) singled and senior tri-captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ) notched a 2 RBI home run. St. Joe's sophomore Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) singled in the second inning and eventually scored on an error to go up 3-0. Simmons evened the score in the third inning with two singles, a two RBI double by Anne Hennigan, and an RBI triple by Ann Talarico. In the sixth inning, Dowling and Liaci singled. Sophomores Jaime Morrison (Auburn, ME) and Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) singled and after 3 wild pitches, Liaci scored the game winning run for the Lady Monks.
10/25/04 Four Lady Monks Named NFCA Scholar-Athlete The NATIONAL FASTPITCH COACHES ASSOCIATION announced its Scholar-Athletes for the 2003-04 academic year, among whom were four of Saint Joseph's very own: Allyson Ferguson '05 (Sabattus, Me.), Leanne Morton '05 (Gorham, Me.), Amanda Roy '07 (Winslow, Me.), and Jaime Daugherty '07 (Bass Harbor, Me.). To earn this accolade, a player must have achieved a 3.5 GPA or better for the year while competing in a varsity-level sport. The NFCA and Saint Joseph's are proud to recognize Coach Jamie Smyth and his program for excellence in the classroom!
