10/29/05 - Sinclaire named to All Tournament Team
at Bridgewater State Halloween Classic

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) received the honor following the squad’s participation in the Bridgewater State College Classic last weekend. St. Joe’s (4-24) finished the weekend 0-4 and did not face tournament champion Bridgewater State. The Bears went 4-0, defeating U-Mass Dartmouth, UNE, Keene State and Colby-Sawyer.

Colby-Sawyer defeated the Monks 30-7, 30-12, and 30-20 in the 4 pm match on Friday and Hunter College also earned a 3-0 win over St. Joe’s in the 6 pm match with scores of 30-13, 30-10 and 30-26.

On Saturday, St. Joe’s dropped matches to Merchant Marine (32-30, 30-23, 30-11) and University of New England (30-21, 30-16, 30-24).

The Monks were led by Sinclaire and junior Kathleen Lemon (Sanford, ME). Both players covered a lot of court and played with tremendous intensity all weekend.


10/22/05 - Monks Finish 1-2 in Autumn Classic

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College hosted the annual volleyball Autumn Classic on Saturday and faced tough competition from Maine Presque Isle, Newbury College and Maine Machias. St. Joe’s finished 1-2 while Newbury was 3-0, UMPI was 2-1 and Machias was 0-3.

St. Joe’s was led by senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) with 23 digs, 22 kills and nine service aces for the day. Sophomore Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) had 16 kills, 14 digs, 3 assists and 2 aces while sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) had 32 assists, 17 digs, 11 kills and 6 aces.

Also contributing for the Monks were senior Kayla Ballentine (Alton, NH) with 19 digs, 6 aces, 4 kills and 2 assists and sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) with 14 kills, 9 digs, 5 aces and 2 assists. Junior co-captain Kathleen Lemon (Sanford, ME) and sophomore Julie Hart (Belfast, ME) also turned in strong performances.


10/15/05 - Eastern Nazarene Tops St. Joe’s

QUINCY, MA - St. Joe’s dropped a 3-0 decision at Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday. The loss brings the Monks to 3-17 on the year while ENC improved to 10-12.

Eastern Nazarene dominated the first two games winning 30-13 and 30-11, but St. Joe’s fought back in the third game, eventually losing 30-20.

The squad returns to action on October 22, taking on Maine Presque Isle at 10 am, Newbury College at 1 pm and Maine Machias at 3 pm in the SJC Autumn Classic.


10/12/05 - St. Joe’s Drops Dramatic 5 Game Match to UMF

STANDISH, MAINE – Just four days after being swept 3-0 at Farmington, the St. Joe’s squad extended the Beavers to an exciting 5-game match, ultimately losing 3-2. The team was sluggish at the start of the match, quickly going down 0-2 with scores of 30-17 and 30-23.

St. Joe’s came out in game three and dominated, going up 6-4 and opening up a 9-point lead. After scoring 6 straight points, the Monks took the game 30-15. Another quick start in game 4, jumping out 6-1, led to a 30-25 win and evened the match at 2-2.

Farmington came out strong in the final game, going up 5-,1 but St. Joe’s fought back and forced 2 ties before eventually falling 15-11.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) turned in another great performance, recording 9 kills, 4 service aces and 15 digs. Sophomores Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) and Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) dominated the net with 7 kills for Sinclaire and 6 for Perry. Sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) had a solid match with 4 kills, 11 assists, 4 digs and a service ace.

The team plays next at Eastern Nazarene (MA) on October 15 at 11:00 a.m.


Oct. 7-8, 2005 - Tough Weekend for St.  Joe's at UMF Invitational

Farmington, ME- Saint Joseph's College volleyball dropped to 3-15 on the season after going 0-3 at the UMF Invitational on October 7-8.

On Friday night the squad lost to Husson by scores of 24-30, 13-30 and 16-30. St. Joe’s bounced back on Saturday and extended Salem State to a four-game match, eventually losing 30-32, 30-28, 18-30 and 17-30.

The UMF volleyball team (11-6) enjoyed a successful weekend at its own tournament, sweeping four matches. They closed out competition with a three-game win over St. Joe's 30-15, 30-25, 31-29.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) led St. Joe’s with combined weekend totals of 18 kills, 3 service aces, 32 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) contributed 28 assists, 31 digs, 6 service aces, 1 block and 11 kills while sophomore Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) had 7 kills, 2 assists, 2 service aces and 6 digs.

The team takes on Farmington at home on Wednesday, October 12th at 7 pm.


10/4/05 - SJC SWEEPS THOMAS
Bowes Leads Team

WATERVILLE, MAINE – Senior outside hitter Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) recorded season-highs in kills (12) and service aces (8) as the Saint Joseph's College volleyball team (3-12) completed a three-game sweep of Thomas College (2-9).

The St. Joe’s squad, without the services of two key players due to academic commitments, earned the sweep with scores of 33-31, 30-14 and 30-27.

Sophomore Stephanie Furtado (W. Warwick, RI) had 12 assists, 3 kills, 2 digs and a service ace while sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) had seven kills and a service ace. Sophomore Julie Hart (Belfast, ME) turned in a strong performance, playing in her second match of the season.

The team travels to Farmington on Friday, October 7th for a 6 PM match vs. Husson College in the UMF Invitational Tournament.


10/1/05 - St. Joe’s Finishes Fifth at RIC Invitational

Providence, RI – The Saint Joseph's College volleyball team faced strong competition this weekend and placed fifth in the Rhode Island College Invitational Tournament. Host RIC took first place with a record of 4-0 for the tournament and 12-9 overall. The St. Joe’s record stands at 2-12 on the season after going 0-4 at the tournament.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) led St. Joe’s with combined weekend totals of 16 kills, 6 service aces, 20 digs and 2 blocks. Junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) had 8 kills, 5 assists, 4 service aces, 6 digs and 1 block while sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) contributed 27 assists, 18 digs, 2 service aces, 2 blocks and 1 kill.

The team travels to Thomas College for a 7 pm match on Tuesday, October 4th.


9/28/05 - FARMINGTON DEFEATS ST. JOE’S

Farmington, MEFaced with the challenge of competing without two team members, the Saint Joseph's College volleyball team came together and stretched Farmington to a 30-27 third game. Although St. Joe’s lost the match 3-0, several players stepped up and had great performances.

Two players in particular, sophomores Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) and Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) played new positions and made quick and effective adjustments.

Sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) continued to be a physical presence at the net while junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) turned in another strong defensive effort. Junior Kathleen Lemon (Sanford, ME) had one of her finest games of the season.

St. Joe’s plays on Friday, September 30th in a tournament at Rhode Island College.


9/20/05 - LADY MONKS FALL TO NOR'EASTERS

STANDISH, MAINE – The Saint Joseph's College volleyball team dropped to 2-7 on the season with a 3-0 loss to University of New England (1-5). The Nor’easters took the match by scores of 30-24, 30-22 and 30-10 to secure their first win of the season.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) came out strong and provided great leadership throughout the match. Sophomore Kristin Sinclaire (Foxboro, MA) played well defensively for the Lady Monks, while sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) was a force at the net.

The team travels to UMaine-Farmington for a 7 PM match on Wednesday, Sept. 28.


9/17/05 - ST. JOE’S DROPS TWO at MARITIME TRI-MATCH

CASTINE, MAINE – Saint Joseph's College came up short in a tri-match at Maine Maritime and stands at 2-6 on the season. In the first match, Maritime recorded a 3-0 victory with scores of 30-20, 30-10 and 30-23.

St. Joe’s dropped the second match 3-1 to Maine Presque Isle. After losing the first and second games of the match, St. Joe’s bounced back to take the third game 30-26, but were unable to hold on and dropped the fourth and deciding game, 30-24.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) recorded 10 kills, 3 aces 21 digs and 1 block for the day. Junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) had 16 kills, 4 aces and 6 digs while sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) had 24 assists, 4 kills 4 aces and 3 digs.

First-year Tiffany Michaud (Walpole, NH) contributed in both matches.

Next up is a home contest against UNE on Tuesday, September 20 at 6 PM.


9/14/05 - HUSSON DEFEATS ST. JOE’S, 3-1

BANGOR, ME – Husson College rallied past Saint Joseph’s for a 3-1 win. The Eagles record stands at 2-3, while Saint Joseph’s drops to 2-4.

The Lady Monks came out strong, taking the first game 30-25, but the Eagles would win the next three games 30-18, 30-22, and 30-25.

Senior captain Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) and sophomore Stephanie Furtado (West Warwick, RI) led St. Joe’s. Bowes had 10 kills, 12 digs, 2 assists and 1 block while Furtado had 17 assists, 10 digs and 3 kills. Sophomore Kelly King (Center Harbor, NH) chipped in with 11 kills, 6 digs and 2 blocks.

St. Joe’s next match will be September 17th at Maine Maritime at 11 AM.


9/10/05 - ST. JOE'S HOSTS FALL INVITATIONAL TOURNEY

STANDISH, MAINE - Saint Joseph's College played host to Maine Maritime, Green Mountain and Mitchell Colleges in the annual Fall Invitational this past weekend. St. Joe's was the runner-up to Mitchell College in the championship round, while Maine Maritime (1-3) defeated Green Mountain (3-3) in the consolation.

St. Joe's defeated Maine Maritime 3-1 in the 6:00 PM match on Friday night and first year Tiffany Michaud (Walpole, NH) made a strong showing in her first intercollegiate contest. The team was paced by sophomore Kelly King (Ctr. Harbor, NH) with 11 kills on 30 attempts, 3 digs and 2 blocks and senior Kristen Bowes (Westford, MA) with 9 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces. Junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) added 13 digs, 2 blocks and 2 assists.

In the 8 PM match, St. Joe's handled Green Mountain easily, winning the match 3-0.  Fiandaca had 17 assists, 4 kills, 8 digs and 2 solo blocks while senior Kayla Ballentine (Alton, NH) had 3 kills, 2 aces in 15 service attempts with no errors and 5 digs.

Mitchell took the 10 AM match on Saturday, defeating St. Joe's 3-2 in a hard-fought match. Bowes had 8 kills, served 29 balls with only 1 error and had 6 aces, 11 digs and 2 blocks. King had 12 kills, 1 ace, 10 digs, 2 solo blocks and 2 assisted blocks while Furtado chipped in with 3 kills, 22 assists, 4 aces, 6 digs and 1 block.

St. Joe's (2-3) faced Mitchell (4-0) in the 3 PM championship, but went down in 3 straight games, 30-25, 30-23 and 30-27. Bowes finished the match with 5 kills, 2 aces and 5 digs.

9/6/05 - Southern Maine Tops St. Joe's 3-2 in Season Opener

STANDISH, MAINE - The Saint Joseph 's College volleyball team (0-1) jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in their season opener vs. Southern Maine (1-0), but the Huskies came back to take the game one win from the Lady Monks, 27-30.

The next two games went to St. Joe's 30-26 and 33-31. Sophomore Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) provided a much-needed spark in games two and three and finished the day with eight kills in 13 attempts and four blocks. Southern Maine took the fourth game 30-20 to even the match at 2-2.

After ties at 4, 8 and 11 points, the Huskies closed out the match with a 15-13 win in a hard-fought fifth game.

Junior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) registered 8 assists, 5 kills, 2 aces and 10 digs in four games. Sophomore Stephanie Furtado (W. Warwick, RI) had 16 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore Kelly King (Ctr. Harbor, NH) had 6 kills and 7 blocks while junior Kathleen Lemon (Sanford, ME) put in a tremendous effort on defense, recording eight digs.
