COLLEGE SOFTBALL RANKS The National Fastpitch Coaches Association
today announced the Top Ten All-Academic Teams, based on cumulative grade-point
averages submitted by NFCA member head coaches for the 2005-06 academic
year. Through this program, the NFCA honors collegiate softball teams
for their success in the classroom. June 8, 2006 Albert and Burrola Honored by Association
of Division III Independents STANDISH, ME – Two members of the Saint Joseph's College softball team were honored by the Association of Division III Independents this week. First-year players Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) and Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) helped the young St. Joe’s squad and Coach Jamie Smyth (9th Year, SJC `92) make a remarkable turnaround this season, posting a 24-17 record after finishing just 12-25 in 2005. Kristi Albert earned First Team honors after starting 41 games in the outfield and batting .422 with a .952 fielding percentage. Albert led the team with 57 hits, had 8 stolen bases and was also honored by the New England Intercollegiate Softball Association as an Honorable Mention. Gabrielle Burrola also started 41 games and was named to the Second Team for her 11-9 performance on the mound and was recognized with an Honorable Mention for her efforts at second base. Burrola allowed only 24 walks and struck out 87 in 132 innings pitched and was very effective at the plate, batting .331 with a team-high 39 RBI. Softball coaches at member institutions of the Association of Division III Independents selected the players during a conference call. The Association of Division III Independents consists of 19 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in seven sports in 2005-06. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association also provides statistical services for its members in seven sports, and has announced All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year. May 26, 2006 Albert Earns NEISCA Honors First-year left fielder Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, Me./Cony) was named to the New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association 2006 Division III All-Star Honorable Mention Team. In 41 games started, Albert had a .952 fielding percentage, while batting .422 for the Monks. May 1, 2006 Monks Drop Two Games to Bowdoin STANDISH, ME – St. Joe’s lost to Bowdoin 10-3 and 2-1 last night in games that had been rescheduled from Friday. The Monks (24-17) were coming off an action-packed weekend in which they captured the DIII Independents Northeast Championship with wins over Maine-Presque Isle, Green Mountain and Mitchell Colleges. Game one was much closer than indicated by the 10-3 final score with only one run separating the teams until the top of the seventh. St. Joe’s got on the board first as FY Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by FY Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM). Bowdoin (18-22) evened the game with a run in the fourth on two singles and an RBI-double and took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Monks tied the game on a two-RBI single by FY Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) that scored Albert and FY Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME). Bowdoin took a one run lead in the sixth but pulled away in the seventh with six two-out runs. St. Joe’s was led by Ludwig (2/3, 1 run) and Albert (1/3, 2 runs) while sophomores Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) and Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) and senior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) added singles. Burrola (11-9) took the loss for St. Joe’s. Junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) (13-8) struck out five for the Monks in game two but Bowdoin held on for a 2-1 victory. After three scoreless innings, the Polar Bears took the lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. Junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) hit a two-out RBI double in the seventh, but Bowdoin ended the rally with a strikeout. Two doubles by FY Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) highlighted a nine-run first inning as Saint Joseph's College cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings over Mitchell College. St. Joe’s batted around in first inning as FY Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) scored on an error. Burrola followed with her first double, scoring FY Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME). The Monks continued with singles by FY Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME), sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME), Albert, Ludwig and a 3-RBI double by Burrola. Mitchell plated a run in the third on an RBI single by senior Jennifer Cassara (New Rochelle, NY) that scored Donelin. The Monks added a run in the third and a final run in the fourth as sophomore Audra Cushman (Bangor, ME) singled and went on to score. Junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) improved to 13-7 and struck out two in the win. Arendt took the loss for Mitchell. St. Joe’s was led by Burrola (2/3, 1 run, 4 RBI), Ludwig (1/3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Albert (2/3, 3 runs). Roy, Bartolucci and Cassara each had a hit for Mitchell. AD3I SOFTBALL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM April 30, 2006 DIII INDEPENDENTS NORTHEAST WOMEN'S SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS Semi-Final Round - Mitchell Advances with Win Over Green Mountain STANDISH, ME – Mitchell College (16-14-1) took advantage of a nine-run fourth inning to defeat Green Mountain College 14-3. Green Mountain (5-17) was eliminated with the loss. Senior Andrea Arendt (New London, CT) struck out four in the win and first year Melissa DeAngelis (Revere, MA) took the loss for Green Mountain. Mitchell scored three runs on four hits in the first but Green Mountain answered back in the third, tying the game 3-3 on singles by FY Christina Chamberlin (Woodstock, VT), FY Missy Wapshare (Blasdell, NY) and FY Caitlin Berry (Acton, MA). The Pequots added two runs in the third and pulled away in the fourth, scoring nine runs which included a two-RBI single by junior Ashley Mclaren (Warren, CT) and FY Liz Roy (Griswold, CT), a two-RBI double by FY Lindsey Donelin (Pawcatuck, CT) and an RBI double by senior Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT). Mitchell was led by Roy (3/4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Donelin (3/4 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Bartolucci (3/3, 1 run, 2 RBI). Wapshare went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Green Mountain. 1 STANDISH, ME – #1 Saint Joseph's College (22-15) defeated #4 Maine-Presque Isle 12-0 in game one of the double elimination tournament this afternoon. Junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) improved to 12-7 with the win, striking out four and allowing just one hit. t The Monks plated four runs on five hits with singles by FY Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME), FY Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME), FY Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) and junior Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME). FY Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) added a double. In the second inning, Albert singled and went to second on a sacrifice FY Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME), third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Burrola. Burrola scored on a double by Bechard to make it 6-0. St. Joe’s added four more runs in the third as senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) doubled and scored on a single by sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME), Albert hit an RBI single, Burrola hit an RBI double and McKenney hit an RBI single. In the fourth, junior Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) reached on an error and advanced to second. FY Iris Guimond (Fort Kent, ME) singled and sophomore Audra Cushman (Bangor, ME) drew a walk to load the bases. This set up Ludwig for a 2 RBI single that extended the lead 12-0. The game ended due to the eight-run rule when Maine Presque Isle (1-12) failed to score in the fifth inning. Sophomore Nichole Michaud (Limestone, ME) took the loss and senior Samantha Grier (Caribou, ME) had the only hit for the Owls. Albert and Burrola were 3 for 3 for the Monks. Game 2 First year Melissa Pechacek (Los Fresnos, TX) put down a perfect bunt in the seventh to score FY Christina Chamberlin (Woodstock, VT) and give # 3 Green Mountain an 8-7 victory over #2 Mitchell College. Green Mountain jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first. Chamberlin hit a 2 RBI single went on to score on an error. Mitchell responded in the bottom of the inning as FY Liz Roy (Griswold, CT) tripled and scored on a passed ball. Senior Jennifer Cassara (New Rochelle, NY) scored after singles by senior Mary Courtois (New London, CT) and junior Ashley Mclaren (Warren, CT) to make it 4-2. The Eagles added three runs in the second on singles by FY Kaitin Petros (Tewksbury, MA), FY Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY), senior Shauna Blakely (North Hollywood, CA) and FY Melissa DeAngelis (Revere, MA). Mitchell scored a run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to stay within striking distance and Roy homered in the sixth to tie the game 7-7. Green Mountain’s Chamberlin doubled in the top of the seventh and advanced to third on a throw and went on to score the game winning run on the bunt by Pechacek. Mclaren singled for the Pequots in the bottom of the inning but the Eagles closed out the inning with a strike out and two ground-outs. DeAngelis struck out five in the win for Green Mountain and senior Andrea Arendt took the loss for Mitchell. Game 3 Senior Andrea Arendt (New London, CT) struck out seven in the win and sophomore Nicole Michaud (Limestone, ME) took the loss for Maine Presque Isle. Mitchell went to work quickly as Roy doubled and scored on a single by FY Lindsey Donelin (Pawcatuk, CT). Donelin stole second and scored on a double by senior Kristen Bartolucci (Ledyard, CT). Bartolucci went on to score and put the Pequots up 3-0. Presque Isle scored two runs on three hits in the second and added three more runs in the third as Arendt walked in two runs and FY Erin Pelletier (Madawaska, ME) singled in a run. Mitchell regained the lead in the bottom of the third, 7-5, scoring four runs on five hits and added two more runs in the fourth as Donelin tripled to score Roy and went on to score on a sacrifice by Bartolucci. The Pequots added two insurance runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Game 4 First-year Gabrielle Burrola (11-8) struck out seven batters and tossed a 1-hitter as Saint Joseph's College (23-15) defeated Green Mountain 15-0. Melissa DeAngelis took the loss for the Eagles. The St. Joe’s bats came to life as nine players accounted for twelve hits in the lopsided victory. After a six-run first inning, the Monks took advantage of three Green Mountain (5-17) errors and a hit in the third to extend the lead to 8-0. Top reserves FY Erin Ackley (Fairfield, ME) and sophomore Audra Cushman (Bangor, ME) took advantage of their opportunities and chipped in with a double and single respectively. Both players also had a run and an RBI. Leading the Monks were junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) (2/3, 2 runs, 3 RBI), McKenney (2/4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Albert (2/3, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Farrell with two runs scored. FY Brittany Holden (Schenectady, NY) had the lone hit for the Eagles. Green Mountain faces Mitchell College tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and St. Joe’s will take on the winner at 1:00 p.m. April 27, 2006 Monks Complete Sweep of Colby College STANDISH, ME – St. Joe’s snapped a four-game losing streak with a convincing two-game sweep of Colby College (10-19). The Monks (21-15) took game one 3-1 and went on to capture a 7-2 game two victory. First-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) struck out three and improved to 10-8 in game one. First-year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) had a double and a single for St. Joe’s in her first intercollegiate victory. In game two, junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) (11-7) struck out two of four batters faced in one inning to record the win for St. Joe’s. Albert went 4 innings for the Monks before first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) took over and threw two. Ldwig was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI while Albert, first-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) and junior Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) were all 2 for 4. April 25, 2006 UNE Takes Two from St. Joe’s STANDISH, ME – Jess Silvio struck out 7 and allowed just 3 hits to lead UNE to a 3-1 win over St. Joe’s (19-14) in game one tonight. An 8-run fifth inning by UNE (17-11) put game two out of reach as the Nor’Easters completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory. Game 1 - UNE plated a run in the first as Lisa Baillargeon singled, went to third on 2 wild pitches and scored. In the fourth, Katie Morin tripled and scored on a single by Ashley DePasquale to put UNE up 2-0. The Monks responded in the sixth as junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) tripled and scored after a single by sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME). UNE added a run in the seventh as Chelsea Cummings walked and scored on a double by Sarah Hamel. First-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) (9-8) took the loss for St. Joe’s and Hamel pitched 1.2 innings for the Nor’Easters, striking out 2 and allowing no hits to earn the save. Game 2 - Hamel struck out seven and allowed only one hit as UNE shut-out St. Joe’s 10-0 in game two. Junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) (10-7) took the loss. Morin scored off a double by Karcha Turner to give UNE a 1-0 lead in the first. The Nor’Easters extended the lead in the fourth as Chelsea Goslin walked and scored on a single by Michaela O’Rourke. UNE scored 8 runs on 8 hits in the fifth; Hamel had two singles while Megan Gaedje, Jenn Cowan, and Karcha Turner each had a hit, Goslin and Baillargeon doubled and Morin added a triple. First-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) had the only St. Joe’s hit of the game. St. Joe’s hosts Colby on Thursday, April 27 at 5:00 p.m. April 24, 2006 St. Joe’s Finishes 2-2 at Colby Tourney WATERVILLE, ME – The Saint Joseph's College (19-13) softball team defeated Bates 3-1 and Colby 8-2 on Saturday, but dropped games to Brandeis 3-2 and Bates 8-5 on Sunday. Sat., 4/22/06 - First-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) earned her ninth win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Bates College. Junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) gave St. Joe’s a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth, but Bates tied the game in the bottom of the inning with doubles by Kyla Decato and Beth Larkin. The Monks secured the win in the fifth as first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) singled and scored off a hit by sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA). First year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) doubled to score Burrola to make it 3-1. Junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) notched her tenth win of the season as St. Joe’s defeated Colby College 8-2. Colby pitcher Randi Arsenault gave up 6 hits and 6 runs in the first two innings from which the Mules were unable to recover. The Monks came out swinging in the first as singles by first-year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME), McKenney and senior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) gave St. Joe’s a 3-0 lead. St. Joe’s added three runs in the second inning on hits by junior Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) and Albert, two walks and two errors. The Mules plated a run in the fourth as Molly Puskar doubled and went home on a hit by Katie Wight. In the sixth, Burrola singled and scored on a double by McKenney. McKenney went on to score on an error to make it 8-1. Colby scored a final run in the bottom of the inning as Puskar hit an RBI single. Sun., 4/23/06 - The Monks had to play an extra inning to decide the 3-2 loss to Brandeis. Burrola took the loss for St. Joe’s. In the second inning, sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) singled to score Morton who had reached on a double, but the Judges added a run in the bottom of the inning as Natalie Volpe doubled to score Samantha Worth. In the eighth, each team had a runner placed on second base to start the extra inning. Albert was placed on second for the Monks and scored off a sacrifice fly by Burrola. Marissa Rubin was placed on second in the bottom of the eight and Worth was hit by a pitch. After two batters flew out to the infield, Volpe singled to score Rubin and Kaitlin Streilein singled to score Worth and end the game. Bates College bounced back on day two of the tourney, defeating St. Joe’s 8-5 on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Monks tied the game with three runs in the third. Morton and Grindle both singled and scored on errors and Albert scored on a single by McKenney. The Bobcats added runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to go up 8-3 but the Monks managed a rally in the seventh as Drown and Albert singled and scored on a 2-out double by Burrola. The comeback fell short as McKenney flew out to the infield to end the inning. Junior Colleen Delahanty (10-6) took the loss for St. Joe’s. St. Joe’s hosts UNE for a 5:00 doubleheader on 4/25. SJC April 18, 2006 Monks Win Two More STANDISH, ME – Behind strong pitching from first year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) and junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME), St. Joe’s took two from Maine Farmington on Tuesday afternoon. First-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) was 2 for 3 with a game-tying double as St. Joe’s took game one 6-5. The Monks completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in the night cap. St. Joe’s improves to 17-11 while Maine Farmington drops to 14-9 overall. Farmington jumped out 2-0 in the first inning of game one, but the Monks answered back in the bottom of the inning as senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) hit a 2 RBI double. The Beavers added a run in the second and 2 more in the third to go up 5-3. McKenney ripped a 2 RBI double in the fifth and scored the go-ahead run as Morton reached on a fielder’s choice. Burrola went 2 for 4 and struck out six as she improved to 8-6 while sophomore Meagan Carman (Unity, ME) took the loss for Farmington. First-year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) and junior Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) added two hits apiece. In game 2, Burrola drove in first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) to give the Monks a 1-0 lead in the first inning. St. Joe’s plated 5 runs in the third after singles by Albert, first-year Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) and a walk by Ludwig loaded the bases for a 3 RBI double by Burrola. McKenney doubled to score Burrola and went home on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. Farmington got on the scoreboard with 4 runs on 5 hits in the fourth and added a run in the fifth to close in on the Monks 6-5. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) singled to score Burrola in the fifth and help secure the win for St. Joe’s. Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) improved to 9-5 with the win while first-year Sarah Defilipp (Brewer, ME) took the loss for Farmington. The Monks, along with teams from Bates and Brandeis, head to Colby College in Waterville for a two-day tournament this weekend, April 22-23. April 17, 2006 St. Joe’s Splits with Thomas STANDISH, Maine – Thomas (11-13) shut out the Monks 4-0 in game one, but Saint Joseph’s (15-11) responded with an 11-2 victory in game two today. In game one, senior Joy Ireland (Clinton, ME) struck out 12 and allowed only 4 hits for the Terriers and first year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) (7-6) struck out 3 in the loss for St. Joe’s. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) hit a double and sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME), junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) and first-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) all singled. In game two, junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out four and improved to 8-5 as St. Joe’s won by the 10 run rule in the fifth inning. State STANDISH, ME – The Saint Joseph's College batters took advantage of 19 hits to defeat Plymouth State 5-1 and 7-2 and improve to 12-10. The Monks’ winning streak stands at 6 in a row. The Panthers drop to 3-14 overall. In game 1, first-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) (6-5) struck out four, allowed only 5 hits and went 3 for 4 with a double and two singles. Senior Rose Eaton (Concord, NH) took the loss for Plymouth. After two scoreless innings, first year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) and Burrola singled and moved over on a double steal. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) drove Ludwig home with a single to right center. First-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) sent Burrola home with a single. Senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) moved the runners over and Eaton struck out junior Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME), but gave up a walk to junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME). With two outs and the bases loaded, junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) ripped a two-run double over the right fielder’s head to score Farrell and McKenney and put the Monks up 4-0. St. Joe’s added another run in the fifth as first year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) reached on a bunt single, stole second and advanced to home on a throwing error to second base. In Game 2 junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) improved to 6-5 as St. Joe’s recorded a 7-2 victory. First year Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, NH) took the loss for the Panthers. Albert hit a lead-off single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Burrola. The Monks went up 2-0 in the third as sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) doubled and scored off a single by Burrola. The Panthers evened the score in the fifth. Senior Jess Fortin (Chester, NH) and first-year Leanne Barry (Auburn, NH) singled and first-year Heather Bartolo (Derry, NH) sent them home with a double. In the bottom of the fifth, Albert reached on an error and Ludwig singled to set up Farrell for a two run double. Sophomore Andrea Piela (Lisbon Falls, ME) came in to pinch run for Farrell and moved to third on a fielder’s choice. Morton walked and Morrison doubled, scoring Piela and Morton to put St. Joe’s up 6-2. Albert and Ludwig singled in the sixth and Ludwig scored on an error to make it 7-2. Plymouth mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh as Bartolo and Caswell hit singles with two outs, but Eaton lined out to short stop Colby McKenney for the final out. JOE'S TAKES TWO FROM SALEM STATE STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College won their third and fouth games in a row and improved to 10-10 after defeating Salem State 7-4 and 5 to 4. First-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) evened her record at 5-5 as she struck out 6 in the game 1 victory. First year Katelyn Doherty (Lynnfield, MA) took the loss for Salem. The Monks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as first year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) and first year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) singled. Burrola moved the runners over with a sacrifice and Vikings pitcher Doherty walked sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) to load the bases. First-year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) singled to score Ludwig and Albert and senior Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) reached on a fielder’s choice. Junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) singled to score Farrell. The St. Joe’s bats came alive again in the fourth as junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) and Albert singled. Ludwig smashed her first intercollegiate home run, a three-run shot over the left field fence, to put the Monks up 6-0. Salem State managed a run in the fifth as first-year Meaghan Neenan (Beverly, MA) singled and was moved to second by a sacrifice by junior Ali Carnevalle (Salem, MA) and to third on a fielder’s choice. Sophomore Michelle Enos (Medford, MA) singled to score Neenan. The Monks added a run in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Albert reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second as Drown stole third. Ludwig reached on a fielder’s choice and Drown scored to go up 7-1. The Vikings fought back in the sixth, however, plating three more runs to make it 7-4. Sophomore Sarah Funk (Gloucester, MA) tripled and first year Ashely Morrissey (Norwood, MA) reached first base after being hit by a pitch and then stole second. Sophomore Brianna Cabit (Stoughton, MA) singled to score Funk and Morrissey. Senior captain Cindy Gill (Woburn, MA) reached on an error and Cabit scored the Viking’s final run on a wild pitch. In game 2 junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out 3 and evened her record at 5-5 with a 5-4 win. Neenan and Enos singled in the second inning and Neenan gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead after scoring on a wild pitch. Funk singled in the third inning and also scored on a wild pitch to go up 2-0. The Monks evened the score in the fourth inning as first year Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME) and McKenney singled. First year Iris Guimond (Fort Kent, ME) came in to pinch run for Bechard and scored as Morton reached on an error. Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) hit a sacrifice fly to score McKenney. In the fifth, junior captain Samantha Clark (Maynard, MA) hit a triple and scored off a fly ball by Morrissey but the Monks took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring 2 runs off 4 hits. Albert, Burrola and Bechard singled. McKenney reached on a fielder’s choice as Albert was nabbed at the plate. Morton hit a two-run single to score Burrola and Bechard. The Vikings tied the game in the seventh as Enos singled and moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Clark. The Monks closed out the inning with Burrola scoring the winning run on a single by Morrison. Maritime (1-5) scored three runs off 5 hits in the first inning but the Monks added a run in the bottom of the inning as first year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) walked and stole second. Albert scored as sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) reached on an error. The Mariners made it 4-1 in the fourth as junior Kristen Gaylord (Auburn, ME) singled and freshman Lindsey Ilsley (Thetford Center, VT) scored. St. Joe’s erupted for four runs in the fifth to go up 5-4 as Burrola walked and Farrell singled. First year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) sent Burrola home with a double and Maritime walked senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) and first year Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME) scoring Farrell and McKenney and Morton scored on a wild pitch. Junior Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) singled and scored in the second to make it 2-0 and Albert and Burrola also singled. The Monks plated 5 runs in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0 off singles by Ludwig, Burrola, Morrison and McKenney. In the top of the fifth, first year Darcy Herrick (Otisfield, ME) singled for the Mariners and scored after two errors. Maritime added 3 runs in the sixth to make it 7-4 as senior Amy Asselin (Auburn, ME), sophomore Chelsie Carver (Jonesport-Beals, ME), Herrick and Whittaker all singled. The Mariners threatened again in the seventh after Delahanty struck out the lead off batter. Gaylord reached on an error and first year Meghan McKay (Old Town, ME) singled. The Monks threw Gaylord out at third but sophomore Caitlyn Grant (S. Thomaston, ME) doubled to score McKay. St. Joe’s closed out the inning nabbing Grant at third. The Monks return to action on 4/10 at 3 p.m. against Salem State. April 6, 2006 St. Joe's Falls to Southern Maine, 0-2, 0-3 GORHAM, Me. – USM senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, ME) kept the St. Joe’s bats quiet, striking out 14 en route to a 2-0 win in game 1. First year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM), 3-5, gave up only 3 hits to the Huskies in the first 4 innings and the game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when USM notched two more hits. The Huskies scored on a two-out two-run single from sophomore Dawn Ross (Gray, ME). St. Joe’s managed just two base runners in the game as first year Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) and junior Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) both drew walks. In game 2, first year Kristi Albert (Farmingdale, ME) reached on a lead-off single and was advanced by a McKenney sacrifice bunt, but USM freshman pitcher Bree Loon (Jay, ME) struck out first year Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME) and Burrola fouled out to third base. The Monks threatened again in the second inning as sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) singled to center field and was advanced to second and third on sacrifices by senior captain Leanne Morton (Gorham, ME) and sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME), but junior Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) grounded out to second for the third out. Albert singled again in the third, but the Huskies finished the inning plating the first run of the game. USM added two runs in a four hit sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Farrell singled to right field in the seventh but the Huskies closed out the inning with a strike out, a fly out and handled a line shot to first base by junior Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME). With the loss, junior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) is 3-5 on the season and the Monks are at 6-10. Huskie pitcher Bree Loon improves to 5-2 and USM is 8-8. Saint Joseph's College returns to action on Sunday, April 9, hosting Maine Maritime for a doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m. April 5, 2006 SAINT JOSEPH'S TO HOST Saint Joseph's College has been selected to host the Association of NCAA Division III Independents Northeast Region Softball Championship on Saturday, April 29th, and Sunday, April 30th. Four teams will participate in the double elimination
tournament (as the host institution, Saint Joseph's will participate).
The other schools being considered are Newbury College (Mass.), Mitchell
College (Ct.), Green Mountain College (Vt.) and Maine-Presque Isle. The
selection of teams and tournament seeding will take place on Monday, April
24th. April 2, 2006 SJC Softball Continues Pattern NEWTON, Mass. – St. Joe’s dropped game one at Lasell 4-2, but took game two 7-4 to improve to 6-8 overall. Lasell falls to 4-9 on the season. In game one, sophomore Amanda Corey (Brooklyn, CT) struck out 10 but gave up 7 hits for the Lasers and first year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) struck out 3 in the loss for St. Joe’s. Burrola was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a wild pitch and Guimond scored. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) drove in Ludwig with a single, advancing to second and third on wild pitches and Burrola scored. The Lasers walked the next three batters and Farrell scored to make it 7-3. Lasell managed one more run in the fourth inning, but the Monks held on to their lead to close out the game 7-4. March 31, 2006 Saint Joseph's Splits with Brandeis Judges in Home Opener STANDISH, Me. – The Saint Joseph's College softball team dropped game 1 to Brandeis 4-0, but quickly rebounded to take game 2 and improve to 5-7 on the season with a 2-1 win. Kaitlin Streitlein struck out 10 and allowed only 4 hits for the Judges and first-year Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) took the loss for St. Joe’s. Sophomore Deb Drown (Gorham, ME) and first years Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME), Colby McKenney (Saco, ME) and Burrola each had a hit for the Monks. In game 2, Brandeis held a 1-0 lead going into the seventh inning but Burrola started a comeback for St. Joe’s as she double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. SPRING TRAINING NEWS 3/18/06 - Tough to end a good trip on a low note, but SJC Softball was unable to pull out a win in their final two contests today versus The College of Wooster (Ohio) and Cardinal Stritch University (Wisc.). Colleen Delahanty (1-4) took the loss in game one, where The College of Wooster (3-5-1) scored all of its runs in the fifth and held the Monks to two hits. Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, N.M.) and Megan Farrell (Abington, Mass.) singled for Saint Joseph's (play-by-play). In game two, Deb Drown (Gorham, Me.) had two hits and Gavi Burrola (3-2) allowed just one hit and struck out eight for the Monks versus Cardinal Stritch (1-0), but the Monks allowed four unearned runs, resulting in the 4-0 loss (play-by-play). 3/17/06 - It was not the "Luck o' the Irish" on this Saint Patrick's Day, but strong defense, textbook pitching and hot bats that brought back-to-back wins to SJC Softball (4-4) today in Cape Coral, Florida. The Lady Monks took both games, shutting out North Park University (Ill.) (5-5) 8-0, and trouncing Nichols College (Mass.) (6-4), 21-3. In game two, Colleen Delahanty (Warren, Me.) provided a strong pitching performance for St. Joe's, but the offense was unable to prevail over a fired-up UMass-Boston (1-4) team and the Lady Monks took their second loss of the day in a shutout, 4-0, at the Northwest Cape Coral Sports Complex (play-by-play). 3/14/06 - Saint Joseph's Softball (2-2) duplicated its first-day outing again today, suffering a difficult loss to Fitchburg State University (2-1), 3-8, in game one (play-by-play), but storming back to shut out the Norwich University Cadets (0-3), 9-0 (play-by-play), in game two on another strong pitching performance by frosh Gavi Burrola (Gallup, N.M.) at the Northwest Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Florida. 3/13/06 - The first time outside
of the gym each spring, playing on a real softball field, is always a
test, and so it was as Saint Joseph's College (1-1) started off its 2006
season with a tough 1-6 loss to Wheaton College (5-1). Junior Colleen

However, the Lady Monks took a deep breath, regrouped, and rebounded later
in the day with a crushing 13-5 victory over Salem State College (0-2)
at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida. Newcomer Gabrielle
