JOE'S VOLLEYBALL 2006 Archive 11/5/06 - Newbury Captures DIII Independent Volleyball Championship Standish, ME - Newbury College defeated Maine Presque Isle 3-0 in the Association of DIII Independents Championship hosted by Saint Joseph's College. The Nighthawks were perfect this weekend, finishing 5-0 without losing a game in the five team round robin tournament. Presque Isle went 3-2, Southern Vermont finished 2-2, Mitchell College was 1-3 and St. Joe’s ended up 0-4. Waltham, MA – The young St. Joe’s volleyball team faced its toughest competition of the season this past weekend at a tournament hosted by Brandeis University. Despite going 0-4 at the event, the Monks (9-20) competed with top teams in New England and first-year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Monks dropped a 3-0 decision to Endicott College on Friday night by scores of 30-13, 30-13 and 30-10. On Saturday, St. Joe’s fell 3-0 to host and eventual winner, Brandeis (30-10, 30-12, and 30-15). Gordon College defeated the Monks 3-0 by scores of 30-14, 30-18 and 30-13. Plymouth State proved too powerful for St. Joe’s and won 3-0 (30-14, 30-12, and 30-14) in the Saturday match-up. Along with McGourty, the Monks were led by senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) with 12 kills, 26 digs and 4 service aces and first-year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) with 7 kill, 17 assists, 13 digs and 3 service aces. St. Joe’s hosts the DIII Independents Championship this weekend and takes on Mitchell College on Saturday, November 4th at 10:00 a.m. 10/25/06 - Monks Edged by Farmington
Farmington, ME – Although Farmington took a 3-1 win on Wednesday, the Monks came together and played some of their best volleyball of the season. Led by senior Stephanie Fiandaca (6 kills, 6 service aces and 11 digs) and first-year Jessica Belleau (7 kills), St. Joe’s was competitive in each game, but lost 20-30, 30-19, 27-30 and 18-30. Along with Fiandaca, junior Julie Hart (2 kills, 6 digs) turned in a tremendous defensive performance and was consistently in “the right place at the right time,” returning balls no one expected. In game three, Hart put a ball over the net off her shoulder for a kill, much to the shock of the Farmington squad, who believed they had the point. Junior Brooke Perry chipped in with 4 kills, 4 service aces and 5 digs. Weston, MA – The SJC volleyball team was edged by Regis College 3-0 in their final match of a two-day road trip to Massachusetts on Sunday. The match played out with both teams exchanging points in all three hotly-contested games. The final scores were 31-29, 30-28 and 30-21. First year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) had 19 assists, 9 digs and 2 kills for the Monks and senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) had 7 digs and 5 kills. Junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) chipped in with 5 kills, 4 digs, 2 service aces and a blocked shot. Quincy, MA- The SJC volleyball picked up two losses at a tri-match hosted by Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. St. Joe’s faced Newbury College in the 12:30 PM match, but lost 3-0, by scores of 30-14, 30-24 and 30-16. The Monks played host Eastern Nazarene in the 2:00 PM match and dropped that match 3-0 as well. St. Joe’s was competitive in the first two games, losing 30-22 and 30-20, but lost game three 30-10. St. Joe’s was led by first-year players Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) (8 kills, 14 assists, and 13 digs), and Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) (12 kills, 2 assists, and 7 digs) and senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) with 6 kills, 3 service aces and 12 digs. 10/17/06 - Monks Downed by Lasell
Newton, MA –First year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) turned in a tremendous performance with 7 kills, 4 aces and 4 digs but the Monks fell short, losing 3-1 to Lasell College. The Lasers dominated game one, allowing the Monks only five points, but St. Joe’s came back in game two before being edged 30-21. The Monks pulled away in game three and earned a hard fought 30-28 victory. St. Joe’s was very competitive in game four, but Lasell closed out the match with a 30-15 win. Senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) finished with 8 kills and 6 digs and first-year Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) had 16 assists and 6 digs. Standish, ME – The St. Joe’s volleyball team hosted Maine-Presque Isle and Lesley University in a tri-match on Saturday. In the first match, St. Joe’s lost 3-0 to Maine-Presque Isle. UMPI came out strong in game one, taking a 10-2 lead and went on to win 30-17. In game two, the teams traded points with strong kills for St. Joe’s by first year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) and powerful net play by first year Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME) for Presque Isle. The Owls used three aces to go up 14-10 and continued to expand the lead to 20-11. The Monks closed the gap to five points, but Presque Isle won game two 30-23. In game three, the most competitive game of the match, the teams played evenly until the Owls pulled away at the end to secure the match with a 30-27 win. Presque Isle (14-3) went on the defeat Lesley in the second match of the day, 3-1. The game scores were 31-29, 24-30, 30-23 and 30-23. The Monks dropped match three to Lesley 3-0 and fall to 9-11 on the season, while Lesley improves to 9-9 overall. The Lady Lynx went up quickly, 12-5, in game one and won 30-19. St. Joe’s went point-for-point in game two until a six-point run put Lesley up 14-8. Strong serving by senior Kim Bennett (Bartlett, NH) gave Lesley a 30-12 win. The Monks battled, but fell 30-28 in the third and final game of the match. St. Joe’s was led by first-year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) (9 kills, 8 assists, 5 digs), senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) (10 kills, 4 service aces, 11 digs) and first-year Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) with 21 assists, 12 digs and 2 service aces. Standish, ME – The SJC volleyball squad defeated Maine-Presque Isle 3-2 for their second straight win. The Monks improve to 9-9 overall. The Owls jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in game one, but St. Joe’s came back quickly and went up 9-5. The teams battled and UMPI evened the score at 11-11. Strong serving by first year Erica Davis (Cumberland, ME) put the Owls up 13-11, but a kill by junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) kept the Monks in it. First-year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) added a kill to bring St. Joe’s to within one, 15-16. First-year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) put St. Joe’s up 20-17 with several powerful serves. UMPI reeled off five points in a row but the Monks responded with a six-point run to close out the game 30-23. In game two, senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) put the Monks up 5-0 with three service aces before the Owls recorded one point. St. Joe’s followed up with a 6-0 run to make it 11-1. Davis continued to be a force, helping the Owls close the gap to 15-9. UMPI made one final run but the Monks, paced by Fiandaca and Perry, took game two 30-24. Down 2-0 in games, the Owls come out aggressively in game 3 and took a 9-1 lead and maintained control for much of the game. St. Joe’s closed to within four, 16-12 and the score went back and forth. UMPI kept the pressure on and held a 28-23 lead, but the Monks fought back to close it to 28-26 but the Owls took game three 30-26. The Owls’ strong play continued in game four as they went up 9-2 quickly and held the lead for the entire game. A powerful kill by McGourty brought the Monks to within three, 23-20, but St. Joe’s would get no closer as UMPI closed out game four 30-26 and evened the match at 2 games each. The fifth and deciding game was marked by numerous lead changes. After the Owls evened the score at 13-13, first year Megan Brennan (Quincy, MA) gave the Monks a brief one-point lead with a kill. Davis tied it up with one of her many powerful kills, but a perfectly placed tip by Fiandaca put St. Joe’s up 16-15. Both teams saved their best play for what would be the longest and final point of the match as the Monks took game five 17-15. St. Joe’s was led by Fiandaca (12 kills, 6 assists, 5 service aces, 14 digs), Perry (13 kills, 2 blocks, 3 aces), Lajoie (9 kills, 6 assists, 6 aces, 8 digs) and first-year Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) with 18 assists, 7 digs and 2 aces. McGourty Receives All-Tournament Honors Farmington , ME - The SJC volleyball team went 1-2 this weekend as they participated in an eight-team tournament at the University of Maine Farmington. First-year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) finished the weekend with 17 kills, 14 assists, 13 service aces and 11 digs and was named to the All Tournament Team. Worcester State College defeated Maine Farmington 3-1 in the Championship match on Saturday afternoon. On Friday night the Monks (8-9) stretched Salem State to five games before falling 3-2. St. Joe's took game one 30-19 but lost games two and three (30-21, 30-27) and found themselves down in game 4. Led by the defense of first year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) (4 kills, 3 assists, 7 service aces) and the offense of senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) (8 kills, 3 assists, 4 service aces), the Monks rallied and took game four 30-24. Salem State closed out the match, winning the fifth and deciding game 15-9. First-year Megan Brennan (Quincy, MA) turned in her finest performance of the season with 7 kills and 2 blocks. St. Joe's picked up a 3-1 loss (30-23, 25-30, 30-21, 30-23) to Husson College on Saturday morning, but challenged them much more than in a previous meeting. The Monks were led by the trio of Lajoie (8 kills, 3 service aces), McGourty (7 kills, 6 assists, 2 service aces) and Fiandaca (7 kills). The SJC squads' determination and teamwork brought a 3-1 win over Maine Machias in the afternoon match. After dropping game one 30-24, St. Joe's took games two and three, 30-26 and 30-17. Machias battled point for point in an exciting game four, but McGourty sealed the match with a perfect serve for a 32-30 win. First-year Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) finished with a team-high 18 assists and also added 8 digs and 4 aces. Fiandaca (9 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs) and McGourty (7 kills, 6 aces, 7 digs) paced the St. Joe's once again. Standish, ME – The St. Joe’s volleyball team displayed a dominating performance with a 3-0 win over Thomas College. The Monks improve to 7-7 and the Terriers drop to 1-11 overall. St. Joe’s jumped out to an early 12-0 lead in game one thanks to the strong serving of first year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) and led by as much as fifteen points on two occasions before closing out the game 30-15. Senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) began game two with an ace and went on to reel off three more points. St. Joe’s extended the lead to 12-6 and continued to pick up three and four points in a row. The Monks took game two 30-17. The Terriers made things interesting in game three, holding a 12-11 advantage, until the Monks pulled away with a 10-0 run. Thomas had a slight surge and stayed close, 24-19 but the serving of first-year Megan Brennan (Quincy, MA) finished off the Terriers 30-19. St. Joe’s was led by Lajoie (10 service aces, 8 assists, 3 kills), Fiandaca (13 service aces, 2 kills) and Brennan (6 service aces, 4 kills). Boston, MA – The SJC volleyball team (6-7) picked up a pair of losses on Saturday at a tri-match hosted by Babson College. Norwich defeated St. Joe’s 3-1 by scores of 30-14, 30-22 and 30-16. The Monks were led by first-year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) with 6 kills and 3 assists, first year Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) with 7 assists and 4 digs and senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) with 6 kills. Babson topped St. Joe’s 3-0 by scores of 30-20, 30-15 and 30-19. McGourty finished with 4 kills, 3 assists and 3 service aces and Gowan had 7 assists. Standish, ME – The St. Joe’s volleyball squad lost 3-1 to Farmington and stand at 6-5 while UMF improves to 9-2 overall. Farmington jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game one, but the Monks responded and went up 6-4. After 7 unanswered points by Farmington, St. Joe’s took a time out to regroup. UMF took advantage of the strong net play of first year Jenna Rowan (Kittery, ME) and sophomore Danielle O’Brien (Calais, ME) to take a commanding lead and continued to find the open spots on the floor to stretch it to 11-23 and prompt another SJC time out. The Monks scored after the timeout, but UMF proved too strong, closing out the game 30-13. After falling behind by six points in game two, the Monks battled back to 6-8 before a long serve by SJC gave Farmington another point. Rowan followed up with a powerful spike to make it 6-10, but first-year Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) found the far corner with her serve for an SJC point. The teams traded points during several extended rallies, but Farmington continued to move the Monks around the court and maintained a comfortable lead taking game two 30-20. In a hotly-contested game three, the Monks seemed to close the gaps from the two previous games and stayed within a point until knotting the score at 11-11. The powerful serving of junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) gave St. Joe’s their largest lead of the match as she reeled off 5 points and caused a Farmington time out. UMF answered with four quick points to make it 17-16 and the score continued to go back and forth. Perry continued to frustrate UMF as she began to serve again with the score tied at 24 and helped St. Joe’s regain the lead, 28-24. Farmington threatened, but the Monks remained composed and put away game three 30-27. Both teams battled for the lead in game four with the Monks up early, 8-6, but things changed quickly and Farmington went ahead 19-14 causing an SJC time out. The Monks responded with two points before UMF scored four in a row and won the fourth and deciding game 30-20. First year Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) turned in another fine performance with 8 kills and 2 blocks and Perry finished with 7 service aces. Standish, ME – The SJC volleyball squad took advantage of being at home this weekend and swept a tri-match to improve to 6-4 on the season. On Friday evening, the Monks defeated SUNY Morrisville 3-2 in a hard-fought match. St. Joe’s took the first game 30-25, but the Mustangs responded by winning game two 30-27. The teams proved to be evenly matched as the Monks took game three 30-26 and the Mustangs evened the match by winning game 4 by the same score. St. Joe’s took the fifth and deciding game 15-10. The Monks were led by first-year Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) with 15 assists, 4 kills, 2 aces and 2 digs while senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) controlled the defense 8 digs, also adding 8 kills, 4 assists, and 3 aces. The Monks faced Morrisville again on Saturday morning and split the first two games taking the first 30-28, with the Mustangs winning game two 30-24. St. Joe’s took charge and closed out the match winning the next two games 30-25 and 30-17. McGourty and Fiandaca led the Monks with McGourty posting 9 kills, 5 aces and 4 digs and Fiandaca adding 8 kills, 2 aces and 5 digs. First year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) had 3 key service aces in the final game to help put it away and junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) finished with 8 kills. In other action, SUNY Morrisville was led by first year Sarah Sulger (Greene, NY) and swept Maine Machias 3-0 in the 12 PM match on Saturday. St. Joe’s returned to the court to face Maine-Machias in the 2 PM match and won 3-1. The Monks took the first two games 30-24 and 30-16, but the Lady Clippers, paced by senior Lillian Porteus (Petersbury, NY), won game three 30-25. St. Joe’s slammed the door on a possible Machias comeback winning the final game by a convincing score of 30-11. First-year setter Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) had 17 assists, 2 aces and a dig while McGourty finished with 7 kills, 10 assists, and 3 aces. Biddeford, ME – The St. Joe’s volleyball team suffered its second straight loss on Tuesday night. The Monks were swept, 3-0, by the University of New England. The Nor’easters won the match by scores of 30-6, 30-10, 30-16 at UNE’s Campus Center. Paced by the play of Division I transfer Alex Toregas (Chevy Chase, MD), who finished with 10 kills, the Nor’easters dominated the match. Husson College defeated St. Joe’s last night, 3-1, in a match where they overcame early deficits for all three of their wins. The Monks jumped out to an early lead in all four games, but were only able to hold on in Game 2 for a 30-22 win. They were led by a trio of first-year players, including right side hitter Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH), who led the defense, putting up 9 digs to go along with 8 service aces and 4 kills. Outside hitter Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH), provided 6 service aces, 5 digs, as well as 4 kills, and setter Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) chipped in with 16 assists. 9/9/06 - Monks Split on Day

Pine Manor defeats Mitchell in Championship Standish, Me. - On Day 2 of the Invitational, St. Joe’s lost 3-1 to Pine Manor on court one while Mitchell rolled past Lyndon State 3-0 on court two. This set up a three-way tie with Pine Manor, Mitchell and St. Joe’s all having 2-1 records, but the point differential put the Monks into the consolation game against Lyndon State. St. Joe’s (3-2) defeated Lyndon State 3-0 and, despite the earlier loss to Pine Manor, are off to their best start in several seasons. On Saturday, the Monks were paced by senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) with 24 kills, 11 digs and 5 service aces and junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) with 7 kills, 4 digs and 4 service aces. First-year Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) turned in another spectacular performance registering 35 assists and 8 kills. Pine Manor came out strong in the championship match, taking the first two games 30-15 and 30-22, but Mitchell responded and won game three 30-24. Standish, ME - St. Joe's cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lyndon State College (0-1) in their first match of the Invitational. The Monks jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first game of the match, on 12 service aces by Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA). They were led by first-year setter, Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH), who had 19 assists and 3 service aces. Junior Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) added 7 kills and 2 service aces. St. Joe's picked up their second win of the season defeating Mitchell 3-1 in the second match of the evening. They were led by setter Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH), who put up 20 assists and Kate McGourty Meredith, NH) who had 7 kills and 5 service aces. The Monks squeezed by Mitchell in the first two games of the match, 30-27 and 30-25, and then dropped the third game, 19-30. After falling behind 23-28 in game four, the Monks fought back and tied the game at 29. They were able to put it away on two clutch serves by Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME), including one service ace, earning a hard-fought 31-29 victory. Lyndon State College

Young Squad Shows Promise Gorham, Me. - Despite losing the season opener 3-1 at Southern Maine last night, the Saint Joseph's College volleyball team tested the undefeated Huskies (3-0) in each game of the match. The Monks, who started four first-year players, were led by the aggressive play of FY setter Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) with 17 assists, 4 kills and 2 service aces. FY Kate McGourty (Meredith, NH) had 6 kills, 4 assists, 3 digs and 1 service ace in her intercollegiate debut. The team had solid performances from co-captains Kathleen Lemon (SR, Sanford, ME) and Brooke Perry (JR, Biddeford, ME). Lemon had 10 digs and 2 aces while Perry had 7 kills, 3 aces and 2 digs. Senior Stephanie Fiandaca (Quincy, MA) had 3 kills, 2 assists and 6 digs and, along with Lemon, anchored the Monk defense. St. Joe’s hosts
