11/11/07 – Saint Joseph's College Falls in ECAC Championship, 1-0
Bridgewater State College Crowned as Champs

BRIDGEWATER, MA – St. Joe’s was unable to muster any offensive production against second seeded Bridgewater State and the Bears capitalized on a goal by SR Katie Balboni in the 57th minute to earn the victory and the ECAC D3 Field Hockey Championship.

2007 ECAC Runner-upBoth teams missed several opportunities to score in the first half which ended tied at 0-0. Seven minutes into the first period, St. Joseph’s had a chance to score the go-ahead goal on a penalty stroke. Freshman defender Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) hit a rocket that Bears SR goalkeeper Nicole Downs blocked with her left pad.

Downs was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player as she posted her second shutout in as many days while tallying 12 saves in the tournament overall. Downs did not allow a goal in 161 minutes and 42 seconds of play during the tournament. The senior registered four saves versus St. Joe’s.

St Joseph’s best opportunity to score in the second half came in the closing seconds of the game when junior forward Gina Gaetani (Auburn, ME) made an attempt at a cross in front of the goal mouth, but it was cleared out of harms way by senior defenseman Laura Chiuppi.

St Joseph’s freshman goalkeeper “Kat” Simoes (Wakefield, MA) finished the contest with four stops on the afternoon and sophomore defenseman Kimberly Glynn (Danvers, MA) chipped in with a defensive save in the first half.

It’s been quite a week for the St. Joe’s Field Hockey program. On Monday morning, the team’s excitement couldn’t be contained after they were informed of the ECAC bid. In the semifinal game on Wednesday, the #5 Monks defeated #4 Wheaton College, 2-1 in the sudden-victory penalty shot round, only to be told on Thursday that the officials made an error in the number of shootout rounds and the game was deemed incomplete.

On Friday the ladies traveled to Henniker, NH to finish the suspended game at the designated halfway point between the Wheaton and Saint Joseph's College campuses. The Monks prevailed in a hyphenated shootout round, 3-2, to advance to a semifinal game at home vs. #8 Plymouth State College on Saturday, 11/10.

St. Joe’s defeated the Panthers, 1-0, behind a stingy defense and stellar play by goalkeeper “Kat” Simoes to earn the opportunity to play in the championship game.

Bridgewater State College finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots while the Monks held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

The Bears finish the season with a record of 16-6, the most wins in program history, and capture their first ever ECAC Championship. The Monks end the 2007 campaign with a 14-7 record, also the best finish in program history.

11/10/07 – St. Joe’s “Kat” Tames Panthers, 1-0
Monks Defeat Plymouth State, Advance to ECAC Championship

STANDISH, ME – The St. Joe’s Field Hockey team hosted the Plymouth State University Panthers in an ECAC Semifinal match on Saturday and came out victorious, 1-0. Saint Joseph's College FY goalkeeper Kathleen “Kat” Simoes (Wakefield, MA) continued her exceptional play in net, posting the shutout behind a strong defensive corps. The #5 Monks advance to the ECAC Championship game to be played tomorrow at #2 Bridgewater State College.

Simoes SO Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME/Telstar HS) scored the only goal the Monks would need in the 38th minute, taking a rebound off the stick of teammate SO Jessica Baker (Scarborough, ME).

As the first half got under way, it seemed like the game would be a defensive struggle, as each team’s defense held strong.
On multiple occasions the Panthers would storm down field, only to be held back by the strong defense of the Monks. JR Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) led the Monks “D” in keeping the Panther forwards at bay. St. Joe’s SO Kimberly Glynn (Danvers, MA) made some tough blocks to help out her keeper, “Kat” Simoes, who made an amazing save on a shot by Panther Courtney Colligan, which appeared to be a sure goal late in the first half.

With the victory, the #5 Monks continue to make history and advance to the ECAC Championship game to take on #2 Bridgewater State College (15-6) in Bridgewater, MA on Sunday 11/11 at 1:00 PM. St. Joe’s record now stands at 14-6. Plymouth State ends their season, 13-7.

11/10/07 – DÉJÀ VU FOR THE MONKS FIELD HOCKEY TEAM
St. Joe’s Defeats Wheaton in Suspended ECAC Quarterfinal Game, 2-1

HENNIKER, NH – The #5 Saint Joseph's College Field Hockey team was required to complete an ECAC D III Quarterfinal suspended game vs. #4 Wheaton College on Friday, 11/9 at 3:30 on the Campus of New England College. The Monks advance after winning the shootout round by a 3-2 margin. SO Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) scored the game winning goal as the 4th shooter for St. Joe’s in the second shootout round. FY goalkeeper Kat Simoes (Wakefield, MA) made a big save on Wheaton's 4th shooter to help preserve the victory.

The game began on the campus of Wheaton College in Norton, MA on Wednesday @ 2:00 PM and ended with what everyone thought was a Monks 2-1 win in a sudden-victory shootout round. FY Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) scored as the second shooter in the round as the team celebrated around her, all in tears of joy. The following morning, phones were ringing off the hook in the St. Joe’s athletic office as the ECAC officials had deemed the game incomplete. The game officials had ordered the teams to take their sudden victory shootout turns one round too soon, said the officials.

St. Joe’s and Wheaton College agreed to meet at a neutral site halfway between their campuses, New England College in Henniker, NH. The shootout began at 3:30 PM. The teams began the shootout from where the prior sudden-victory round had ended, with both teams having taken 2 shots apiece and the Monks leading 1-0. Each team scored twice in the second shootout set, leaving Saint Joseph's College as the team left standing in the thrilling game spanning three days and several sleepless nights for Coach Rupert Lewis.

St. Joe’s will host Plymouth State @ 1:00 PM, Saturday 11/10. This is an important victory for a Field Hockey program that has gone from one win 2 years ago to six wins last season and 13 victories in ’07 in Coach Rupert Lewis’ 3rd season at Saint Joseph's College.

NORTON, MA-- FY Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME) scored twice during a penalty-stroke shootout, including the game winner, as fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine downed #4 Wheaton College, 2-1 behind a 3-2 penalty strokes victory during the first round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday at Clark Field. The Lyons, a 2006 tournament finalist, finished the year at 13-7. The Monks are 13-6 and host #8 Plymouth State University in a Saturday semifinal at 1:00 PM.

The majority of play during the opening half occurred in the midfield, and Saint Joseph's broke through first. Dunn received the ball off a penalty corner and slid a pass on the left side to FY Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach., ME), who found the net with two minutes remaining in the opening half.

Wheaton tallied four straight penalty corners at one juncture early in the second half but fired off only one shot, and the sequence ended with SR Ashley Miller (East Bridgewater, MA) sending a backhanded crossing pass through an open goal mouth to empty space. With 14:10 left in regulation, FY Jessica Strock (Centerville, MA) tipped in the tying marker, finishing after junior Alisa Ardito's (Branford, CT) pass to the right post eluded the keeper. One minute later, the Monks nearly retook the lead, but freshman back Ashley English (Watertown, MA) made a defensive save off JR Gina Gaetani's (Auburn, ME) bid. With seven minutes left, Lyon first-year keeper Cameron Abel (Windham, NH) came 10 yards out to twice deny SO Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY).

The teams headed to overtime, where the Lyons held advantages of 4-0 in shots and 6-2 in penalty corners. Monk FY keeper Kathleen Simoes (Wakefield, MA) came up with two crucial saves in the first overtime, first denying SR Sara Dimick's (Cumberland, ME) backhanded attempt with her right pad in the 75th minute. During the 82nd minute, Simoes stopped Miller's point-blank shot.

During penalty strokes, visiting Saint Joseph's shot first during the initial five-shot series, but Wheaton buried its first two shots to forge ahead, 2-1. Dunn knotted the competition on her team's third shot, and the Lyons missed their next three tries, In the second round of strokes, during which Wheaton shot first and the team leading after two shots won the game, each keeper saved an initial shot before a Lyon missed wide, setting the stage for Dunn's clinching tally despite Abel diving and getting a pad on the shot.

Wheaton held advantages of 9-7 in shots and 17-9 in corners. Abel and Simoes each made five saves.

11/4/07 - Monks Outplay the Roadrunners
Kayla Nowell Scores Twice

STANDISH, ME - It was a beautiful November day at Saint Joseph’s College, as the Saint Joseph's College Monks took on the Ramapo College Roadrunners. The Monks started off the match strong and grabbed an early 1-0 lead when SO Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME) took a hard shot after recovering a loose ball to score an unassisted goal. The lead was then extended to 2-0, as freshman and Standish native FY Alyssa Dunn scored a goal on a cross pass from SO Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY), who received the ball on a corner from Jillian Kimball. Ramapo College managed to cut the lead down to 1, after Nikki Anne Frodelly scored a goal off a pass from Mackenzie Cahill, making it a 2-1 game going into the half.

Rupert Lewis, head coach for the Monks, must have given a very inspiring speech at the half, because the Monks came out strong with some great ball movement and tight defense. St. Joe’s forced multiple turnovers and dominated the time of possession in the second half. With some sharp passing the Monks extended their lead to 2, as senior captain Darcy Ward (Dresden, ME) and SO Julia Ostrowski each picked up an assist FY Kayla Nowell’s (Bridgton, ME) first goal of the game.

However, the Monks defensive duo of JR Katie Seaman (Beverly, MA) and JR Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) stood their ground and kept the Ramapo College offense at bay. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, the Monks picked up an insurance goal, as Kayla Nowell scored an unassisted goal in the circle, her second goal off the game, giving the Monks a 4-2 win, extending their season record to 12-6.

Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College field hockey team defeated Castleton State 3-2 as the best start in recent program history continues. The Monks improve to 3-0 overall while Castleton stands at 3-2.

Despite wet field conditions, the teams were locked in a defensive battle during the first half and both keepers made tremendous saves. The Spartans went up 1-0 after JR Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT) scored off a rebound at 11:06. Castleton threatened again but SJC keeper FY Kathleen Simoes (Wakefield, MA) made back-to-back saves to keep the Monks close at the break.

The Monks continued their impressive play and execution on penalty corners as FY Courtney Rague (Old Orchard Beach, ME) sent a great cross to JR Kelly Emerson (Vassalboro, ME), who found the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2.

SJC controlled play for the next five minutes and, after several quality scoring opportunities, Rague scored the game-winner off a pass from SO Jessica Baker (Scarborough, ME).

The momentum shifted and the Monks defense fought off a furious Spartan effort to tie the game. Simoes made two impressive saves in the final two minutes but when she was pulled away from the net with a minute to play, JR Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) had a defensive save to preserve the lead.

Simoes had 4 saves for St. Joe’s while Clark finished with 12 for the Spartans.
