12/13/07 - Men's Soccer Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME - Head Men's Soccer Coach Mike Bolanz has announced the 2007 team award winners. Senior Midfielder Shannon DeShield (Pembroke, Bermuda) was honored with the Most Valuable Player award. SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) led the 5-11-3 team with 5 goals to earn the "Golden Boot Award," which goes to the team's leading goal scorer. The Unsung Player Award went to SO Mathew Loiselle (Woburn, MA) and FY Matthew Zinchuk (Bethel, ME) garnered the Rookie of the Year Award. FY Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) received the "Impact Player Award," which goes to the player who consistently makes the biggest impact on the field and provides the team with intangibles that may not show in the boxscore.


11/5/07 - Lane Hubacz Honored by GNAC

STANDISH, ME - JR Defender Lane Hubacz (Mapleville, RI) has been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Second Team. Hubacz's defensive skills helped the Monks (5-11-3, 3-7-1 GNAC) in their late season surge to earn the #7 seed in the GNAC tournament. The junior also scored 3 goals for St. Joe's.

"Lane is a tough defender who makes it difficult for opponents to score," adds Head Coach Michael Bolanz. "He is also very good in the air off set pieces and really matured as a junior, making a big difference in his game."


10/28/07 - Monks' Season Comes to an End
Men Lose to Johnson and Wales, 4-3

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - The Saint Joseph's College Men Soccer team held the lead over Johnson and Wales University for the majority of the game, but the Wildcats scored 3 unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes to claim the victory, 4-3.

JWU got on the board early when Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) scored in the 7th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead, which JWU maintained into halftime. St. Joseph’s College tied the game at the 51:40 mark on a JWU own goal and took the lead after SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, Mass.) went on a breakaway and put in a shot from five yards out, giving the Monks the 2-1 lead at the 52:49 mark. The Monks took the 3-1 advantage at 71:44 when FY Matt Zinchuk (Bethel, Maine) headed in a throw-in from JR Lane Hubacz (Mapleville, R.I.). The Wildcats responded quickly, however when Jeremiah Schenzel notched his first goal of the game in the 77th minute. Less than a minute later, JWU would tie the game when Schenzel led a breakaway and fed a pass to Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.) who put a shot into the lower right corner of the goal, making the score 3-3 at 77:46. The Wildcats' Schenzel headed in a throw in by sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at the 85:53 mark, giving JWU the 4-3 victory.

JWU GK Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made one save while Monks SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) had five saves in the playoff loss.

Saint Joseph's College finishes the year with a 5-11-3 overall record, 3-7-1 in GNAC competition.

10/24/07 - DeShield Leads Monks to GNAC Playoffs

Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Men’s Soccer team needed a victory over Mount Ida College and some help from at least two other GNAC schools to earn a bid into the playoffs on Wednesday. As it turned out, all went in the Monk’s favor. SR Shannon DeShield (Pembroke, Bermuda) scored both of St. Joe’s goals in a 2-0 victory over the Mustangs and SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) recorded his 4th shutout of the season in the game. FY Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) picked up an assist on DeShield’s first score.

In order to gain a spot in the eight team GNAC tournament, the Monks needed the victory and a loss by two of three schools: Emerson College, Rivier College and Emmanuel College. All three schools lost their games and the Monks moved up to the 7th slot in the tournament and will play Sunday, 10/28 vs. Johnson and Wales University at Pierce Stadium. Game time is 1:00 PM.

Directions to Pierce Stadium: Take Interstate-95 South to Interstate-195 East. Take Exit 5 (Warren Avenue) off 195. At the end of the exit, take a left onto Warren Avenue. Continue 1/10 of a mile to FIFTH STREET, or 3/10 of a mile to LYON AVENUE. At either intersection, take a left, and continue to the Pierce Complex lot.


10/21/07 – Monks Fall in Overtime to Lyndon State, 3-2

Standish, ME – St. Joe’s were defeated in overtime by Lyndon State College in a tug-of-war soccer match on Sunday by a score of 3-2. Lyndon State scored first in the 12th minute, but SO Doug MacCallum (Hingham, MA) picked up his 5th goal of the season in the 36th minute to tie the game at one apiece. SO Matt Loiselle (Woburn, MA) was credited with the assist.

The game didn’t remain tied for long as the Hornets scored barely a minute later to go up 2-1. This score remained intact until FY Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) tied the game at two apiece in the 63rd minute. The Hornets JR Darren Roberge scored his second goal of the game in the 99th minute to clinch the game for Lyndon State. SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made 5 saves in the loss.

St. Joe’s plays host to GNAC opponent Mount Ida College on Wednesday, 10/25. Game time is 3:00 PM.

10/20/07 – Men’s Soccer Falls to Norwich University, 4-0

Standish, ME - Saint Joseph's College played host to top ranked Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent Norwich University on Saturday and were beaten 4-0. SO Doug MacCallum (Hinham, MA) led the offensive bid with 4 shots on goal while SR Shannon Deshield (Pembroke, Bermuda) posted 3 shots. SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made 10 saves in the losing effort. The Cadets outshot the Monks 24-13 in the contest.


10/17/07 – Hubacz Lifts Monks Over Lions, 2-1

Boston, MA – JR Lane Hubacz (Mapleville, RI) scored both of the Monks goals in a 2-1 victory over GNAC opponent Emerson College in Men’s Soccer action on Wednesday. Solid play from the St. Joe’s defense and SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME), who registered nine saves, held the Lions to only one goal as they outshot the Monks 27-9.

The Monks drew first blood in the 59th minute when Hubacz scored on a scramble following a corner kick. The Lions answered 65 seconds later when Chris Jones (New York, NY) knocked in a header past St. Joe’s GK Cory Smith. In the 71st minute, Lane Hubacz scored his third goal of the season on a header off a corner kick from teammate SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) for the game winner.

The Saint Joseph's College Monks (4-8-3, 2-5-1 GNAC) host GNAC rival Norwich University Saturday, 10/20. Game time is 1:00 PM.


10/15/07 – Monks Topple Crusaders in Double OT, 2-1

Quincy, MA - The Saint Joseph's College Men’s Soccer defeated Eastern Nazarene College on Monday afternoon in double OT by a score of 2-1. The Monks clinched the victory when FY Matt Zinchuk (Bethel, ME) blasted a header into the top corner off a pass from teammate SO Eamonn Harrigan (Caribou, ME) in the 102nd minute.

The SJC Men fell behind 1-0 in the 30th minute when Eastern Nazarene College’s Jesse Mix scored what turned out to be the Crusader’s only goal of the game. Monks SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) notched his fourth score of the season in the 77th minute on a penalty kick. SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made four saves in the victory for the Royal Blue.

Saint Joseph's College Men’s Soccer (3-8-3, 1-5-1 GNAC) next hits the pitch Wednesday, 10/17 at Emerson College. The GNAC match begins at 5:45 PM in Boston, MA.


10/13/07 - JWU Men’/s Soccer Blanks Saint Joseph’s of Maine, 7-0

East Providence, R.I. – Senior Michael Gliniecki (Baltimore, Md.) scored four goals to lead the Johnson & Wales men’s soccer team to an impressive 7-0 shutout victory against Saint Joseph’s of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Glinecki got JWU on the board early when he converted a penalty kick to give the team a 1-0 lead at the 8:50 mark. His second goal of the game came on a free kick from 20 yards out to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage at the 29:38 mark. JWU added a third first half goal when junior Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson City, Nev.) headed in a cross from sophomore Eric Flath (Warwick, R.I.), making the score 3-0 at 36:15. JWU took the three goal lead into halftime.

The Wildcats continued their offensive explosion early in the second half when senior Joel Reynolds (Middletown, Pa.) put in a corner kick from Flath, making the score 4-0 at the 47:20 mark. Senior Brian Sousa (Providence, R.I.) then headed in a throw in from sophomore Scott Kirchner (Irvine, Calif.) at 49:43 to give the Wildcats the 5-0 advantage. A pair of goals by Gliniecki, first at 53:26 and then at 79:10 would cap off the scoring for the afternoon as JWU cruised to the 7-0 victory.

Freshman Joe Ferraro (Freehold, N.J.) made one save and sophomore Chris Limerick (Middletown, N.Y.) made one stop in goal for Johnson & Wales while SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) had seven saves in the setback for Saint Joseph’s.

With the loss St. Joseph’s of Maine falls to 2-8-3, 1-5-1 in league play.
Johnson & Wales is now 7-4-3 and 6-1 in the GNAC.

The Monks Men next travel to Quincy, MA to play the Eastern Nazerene College Crusaders on Monday, 10/15. Game time is 3:30.


10/7/07 - Hawks Soar past Monks Men

Leicester, MA - The SJC Men's soccer team falls to 2-7-3, 1-4-1 GNAC after a 6-3 loss to the Becker College Hawks (9-4-0, 3-1-0 NAC) on Sunday. The Hawks out-shot the Monks 21 to 7 and were led by JR R.J. Giegerich (Londonderry, NH) and JR Jason Gianatti (Southington, CT) as each player scored two goals in the contest.

The Monks gained the lead in the 16th minute as SO Doug MacCallum (Hingham, MA) scored his fourth goal of the season off a pass from teammate FR Paul Robins (Cornwall, England). FR Matt Zinchuk (Bethel , ME) took a pass from MacCallum to score his first collegiate goal in the 70th minute to tie the game 2-2. Unfortunately for the Royal Blue, the Hawks scored three times before SR Captain Shannon DeShield (Pembroke, Bermuda) tallied his first goal of the season to make the score 5-3 Becker College. The Hawks' JR R.J. Geigerich scored the final goal of the game to put the Hawks up 6-3. SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made 10 stops in the loss.

The Monks travel to East Providence, RI on Saturday 10/13 to play GNAC rival Johnson and Wales University. Game time is 1:00 PM.


10/6/07 - Cushing Scores Twice in Monks Loss

Newton, MA - A hat trick from the Lasers' JR Zach Gagne (Somerset, MA) capped the victory for GNAC rival Lasell as the SJC men's soccer team lost 5-3 on Saturday. With the loss, the Monks record stands at 2-6-3, 1-4-1 GNAC. The Lasers' record is now 6-5-0, 5-1-0 GNAC.

The SJC Men struck first as SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) scored his second goal of the year in the 28th minute. Cushing added his second goal of the game in the 69th minute by way of a penalty kick. FR Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) scored his fourth goal of the year in the 85th minute to conclude the scoring for the Monks. SO GK Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made 10 saves in the loss.


10/2/07 - Monks Play to Double OT Tie

Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College men’s soccer squad tied visiting GNAC foe Daniel Webster College 0-0 in the Monks’ third double overtime match of the season. St. Joe’s stands at 2-5-3, 1-3-1 GNAC while Daniel Webster is 1-7-2, 0-3-1 GNAC.

SJC held the advantage in shots 18-10 and in corner kicks (14-5). Eagles SR Craig Van Tuyl (Buffalo, NY) had five saves while SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made two for the Monks.

Both teams will see GNAC action again on Saturday, October 6th at 1:00 PM as St. Joe’s travels to Lasell College and Daniel Webster plays at Albertus Magnus.


9/30/07 - Monks Tie in Double-Overtime

Waterville, ME – The SJC men’s soccer team posted a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Thomas College on Sunday. St. Joe’s improves to 2-5-2, 1-3 GNAC.

The Terriers went up 1-0 after a penalty kick by Tyler Simpson in the 39th minute and took the lead into the half. St. Joe’s SO Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) returned the favor and tied the score with a penalty kick at 49:36.

SO Eamonn Harrigan (Caribou, ME) broke the tie and put the Monks up 2-1 with an unassisted goal in the 57th minute, but Taylor Helberg knotted the score at 71:06.

SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) made five saves for St. Joe’s.

The Monks host Daniel Webster on Tuesday, October 2nd at 4 PM.


9/29/07 - Monks Fall to Rivier

Standish, ME – Two first-half goals made the difference as Rivier College picked up a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's College in men’s soccer. St. Joe’s stands at 2-5-1, 1-3 GNAC and the Raiders improve to 3-4-1, 2-2 GNAC.

FR Dionisio Quadros (Methuen, MA) netted the game-winner off a pass from SR Gianfranco Pisano (Lynnfield, MA) in the 37th minute. FR Chris Nugent (Bedford, NH) capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal to end the first half.

SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had 2 saves for St. Joe’s and SR Victor Joubert (Lawrence, MA) had 7 for Rivier.


9/25/07 - St. Joe’s and Farmington Play to 0-0 Double OT Tie

Standish, ME – The Monks battled visiting Maine-Farmington to a 2-overtime 0-0 tie today. The Monks stand at 2-4-1 overall and 1-2-0 GNAC while Farmington is 2-2-3.

Both squads had their chances with the Monks holding a 21-9 advantage in shots. SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had two saves for St. Joe’s and JR Brian Lemont (Brunswick, ME) had 6 saves for Farmington.

The Monks host Rivier College on Saturday, September 29th at 3 PM in a GNAC double-header with the women playing at 1 PM.


9/22/07 - Monks Edged by Rams in GNAC Battle

SOMERVILLE, Mass.-- Sophomore Nick Celia (Hanson, Mass.) completed a hat trick by netting the game-winner with 2:23 remaining to lift Suffolk to a 4-3 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over Saint Joseph's (Maine) Saturday afternoon at Dilboy Stadium.

Celia converted an indirect kick off the foot of senior Marco D'Andrea (Belmont, Mass.) on the game-winner for the host Rams (3-2, 1-1 Great Northeast), as the duo combined to net all four Suffolk markers on the day.

Celia gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on an D'Andrea feed, but the visiting Monks (2-4, 1-2 Great Northeast) evened matters just 59 seconds later on an unassisted marker off the foot of sophomore Doug MacCallum (Hingham, Mass.) to forge a 1-1 tie at the break. D'Andrea gave the Rams the lead back at 2-1 just 4:58 after intermission after converting a feed from freshman Adrian Brendel
(Munich, Germany) for his fourth goal of the season, and Celia notched his second tally of the day off another D'Andrea pass in the 64th minute to extend the Suffolk edge to 3-1.

Saint Joseph's struck for a pair of markers in less than two minutes to even the contest at 3-3, as MacCallum's second score of the match on an assist from senior Shannon DeShield (Pembroke, Bermuda) in the 76th minute that was followed by
junior Lane Hubacz's (Mapleville, R.I.) conversion of sophomore Andre Cushing's (Hampden, Maine) corner kick in the 78th minute set up Celia's late heroics for the hosts.

Freshman Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season in goal for Suffolk with a four-save effort, while sophomore Greg Cavanaugh (Haverhill, Mass.) made five stops in net for Saint Joseph's as the Rams outshot the Monks by a 15-10 margin for the contest.

Suffolk travels to Newton, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Lasell in a Great Northeast match that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Saint Joseph's hosts Maine-Farmington in a non-league match on Tuesday afternoon in Standish, Maine that also begins at 4:00 p.m.


9/16/07 - Men’s Soccer Defeats Maine-Presque Isle

Standish, ME – The SJC men’s soccer squad picked up their second win of the weekend with a 2-0 victory over Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday. The Monks improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 GNAC. FR Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) recorded a goal in each half for St. Joe’s.

Robins put the Monks up 1-0 in the eighth minute with a header in the box off a cross by SO Doug MacCallum (Hingham, MA). After the goal, the match remained scoreless until the final thirty-seven seconds when Robins chipped in a dropped ball by the keeper to seal the SJC win.

SO Eamonn Harrigan (Caribou, ME) and FR Banak Thiwat (Cape Elizabeth, ME) each had three shots for St. Joe’s.

SJC keeper SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had four saves in the shut-out.

The Monks play at GNAC opponent Suffolk University on Saturday, September 22nd.


9/15/07 - Monks Edge Emmanuel in Men’s Soccer

Boston, MA – The Monks picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 decision over GNAC opponent Emmanuel College on Saturday. FR Banak Thiwat (Cape Elizabeth, ME) netted the game winner for St. Joe’s.

Michael Evans put Emmanuel up 1-0 with a goal less than two minutes into the match. FR Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) answered back with an SJC goal at 18:35.

The Saints held an 8-2 advantage in shots for the half, but the score remained deadlocked until the 80th minute.

Thiwat scored the deciding goal at 79:25. SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had five saves for the Monks.


9/12/07 - Mariners beat Monks 3-1

Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy came away with a 3-1 win over Saint Joseph’s College tonight in Castine. MMA got goals from three people and were very opportunistic as they capitalized three times on only six shots.

In the non-conference match that saw St. Joe’s outshoot MMA 17-6, MMA broke the 1-1 tie at the 64 minute mark to go ahead 2-1 and scored one more time to escape with the win.

The Monks scored first 15 minutes into the match as Doug MacCallum shot the ball over MMA keeper Randy Bartlett (Lincoln, NH) on a pass from Andre Cushing to go up 1-0. 11 minutes later MMA struck back as Tyler Eads (Belfast, ME) scored off a direct kick just outside the box to even the score at the half 1-1. MMA pulled ahead 2-1 in the 64th minute when Josh McFarlin (Searsport, ME) slid the ball by the keeper on a break away off a pass from Alan Alexander (Cumberland, ME). MMA put the finishing touches on a great win when Jeff Norman (Orono, ME) scored off a feed from Daniel Hassett (Brunswick, ME) to give the Mariners the 3-1 victory.

Randy Bartlett got the win in goal for MMA stopping 7 of the 17 Monks shots. The win improves his record to 2-2-1 on the season. Cory Smith took the loss for St. Joe’s, giving up both second-half goals while making 1 save. Greg Cavanaugh gave up 1 goal in the first half between the pipes for St. Joe's, but got a no-decision.

The Monks host Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday, September 16 at 2:30 PM during Homecoming Weekend at Saint Joseph's.


9/8/07 - Men’s Soccer Falls to Albertus Magnus

Standish, ME – Two second half goals were the difference on Saturday as Albertus Magnus defeated St. Joe’s 2-0 in the Monks’ GNAC opener. Saint Joseph's College stands at 0-2 while Albertus Magnus improves to 2-1-1 overall.

SR Joe Salamone (Northford, CT) connected on a pass from SR Dan Dias (Trumbull, CT) in the forty-ninth minute to put the Falcons up 1-0. Dias extended the lead with a goal at 82:09 off a pass from JR JJ Torres (Trumbull, CT).

SJC keeper SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had five saves and SO Gerald O’Connor (Hamden, CT) had three saves for the Falcons.

St. Joe’s travels to Maine Maritime for a 4 PM match on Wednesday, September 12th and Albertus Magnus hosts Purchase College on Tuesday, September 11th at 4 PM.


9/1/07 - Monks Drop Opener

Standish, ME – JR Sinisa Bajic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored twice as Southern Maine topped Saint Joseph's College 3-1 in men’s soccer today.

SR Eddie Weddington (Augusta, ME) gave the Huskies an early lead after heading the ball into the net in the 30th minute off a cross by Bajic.

SJC keeper SO Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME), finished with 7 saves and made 3 impressive saves in the half to keep the Monks within striking distance.

Bajic netted two second half goals off assists by Weddington and SO Peter McHugh (Portland, ME) to secure the win for Southern Maine.

USM keeper SO David Kreps (Agawam, MA) picked up one save in the shut-out.

The Monks host GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus on Saturday, 9/8 at 3 PM, while the Huskies host University of New England on 9/3 at 1 PM.
