11/6/07- Swim Team Participates
in Charity Event
STANDISH, ME - St. Joseph's College varsity
swim teams participated in "The Hour of Power", a national Division
III swimming relay to raise awareness and support for sarcoma research
on Tuesday, 11/6 at 5 p.m. In total, 46 colleges and universities in 19
conferences, 4 high schools, 3 club teams, over 3,000 athletes participated
tonight from 5-6pm eastern standard time.
The event is in honor of Ted Mullin, a Carleton College swimmer who
passed away in September 2006 of synovial cell sarcoma. Sarcoma comes
in the form of malignant tumors of the musculoskeletal system. It is regarded
as a developmental (early childhood) tumor and
is found most often in the 15-29 age group. While sarcoma is rare
(only 12,000 new cases per year), it is the fifth most common cancer
in ages under 29. And unlike most cancers today, the sarcoma
treatment success rate is not improving.
The "Hour of Power", which is a continuous relay, has a
two-part goal:
The first is to raise awareness of sarcoma cancer. In November of 2006,
19 Division III swim teams participated in the event. In 2007, 46 college
teams will participate.
The second goal is to raise funds for sarcoma research as funding for
sarcoma has actually decreased over the past decade. Funds raised
through the event will go directly to the Section of
Hematology/Oncology at University of Chicago Comer Children's
Hospital, which is dedicated to treatment, care, and research of
sarcoma. Through grants and support the University of Chicago will
match all donations earned through the "Hour of Power" with
a 10-1 ratio.
If you would like to support the St. Joseph's College Swim Teams
in this event you may send donations directly to head coach, Becky Biggs
at
278 Whites Bridge Road · Standish, ME 04084. Please make checks
payable to St. Joseph's College (write "Hour of Power" in the
memo line).
