6/4/07 - Burrola, Ludwig and Farrell Named to
2007 All-Independent Softball Teams

Sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) earned First Team All-Independent honors. Burrola led the Monks with a record of 9-7 and had 99 strike-outs. Junior Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) and sophomore Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) were named Third Team All-Independent. Farrell played first base and led the team in RBI’s and triples while outfielder Ludwig led the team in steals, hits and runs scored.


5/2/07 - Softball ends Season with a Split at Bowdoin

Brunswick, ME – The SJC softball squad wrapped up the season with a 4-0 loss in game 1 and a 4-3 win in game 2 at Bowdoin College this week.

In game 1, FY Christy Wesowicz (Granville, MA) turned in a strong performance in her first intercollegiate start, striking out 7 and allowing no walks, but the Monks struggled at the plate and failed to offer much-needed run support.

Bowdoin scored three runs on three hits in the first inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., Me) led St. Joe’s with two hits and SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME), SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) and FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) each chipped in with one hit.

SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) took the mound and the Monks rebounded in game two, plating a run in both the first and second innings. Bowdoin scored in the bottom of the second to close the gap to 2-1.

In the fifth, FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) doubled and moved to third on a hit by SO Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME). SR Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) ripped a 2-RBI single to right center field to put the Monks up 4-1.

The Polar Bears threatened in the fifth with two runs to make it 4-3, but St. Joe’s held on for the split.  The Lady Monks end their season with 16 wins, 17 losses

4/26/07 - Six in a Row for Softball after Sweep of Farmington
Soucy Collects 6 Hits

Farmington, ME – Saint Joseph's College improved to 15-16 overall with 6-3 and 5-3 wins over Maine-Farmington. FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) helped the Monks with six hits, as the St. Joe’s bats stayed hot for a total of 25 hits.

In game one, JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) singled home FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Farmington tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Farmington plated two runs in the third for a 3-1 advantage that held up until the sixth when the Monks scored three runs on four hits to regain the lead. Singles by SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM), Farrell, and FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) ignited the SJC offense.

St. Joe’s extended the lead with two runs in the seventh to secure the win.

Burrola allowed just three hits, struck out eight and went 2/4 at the plate. Soucy was 3/3 while Farrell, Willis and van der Linden were 2/4.

SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) picked up her fifth win of the season and struck out five in game two.

The Monks scored runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The scoring resumed in the fifth as St. Joe’s added two more runs to go up 5-0. SR Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) scored off of an RBI-single by Willis and SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) went home on a passed ball.

Farmington got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the frame and cut the lead to 5-3 with another run in the sixth, but would come no closer as the Monk defense closed out the game.

Soucy went 3/4, Willis was 3/5, and Ludwig and Grindle had two hits apiece.

The Monks return to action on Sunday, 4/29 at 10 AM as they host Newbury College in the D3 Independents Northeast Regional Tournament. Green Mountain takes on Maine-Presque Isle at noon.


4/26/07 - Saint Joseph's College Selected to Host
Association of DIII Independents Northeast Softball Tournament

Standish, ME – Saint Joseph's College has been selected to host the Association of DIII Independents Northeast Softball Tournament on Sunday April 29, 2007. The four-team tournament will feature Green Mountain College (VT), Saint Joseph's College (ME), Newbury College (MA) and University of Maine-Presque Isle.

4/25/07 - Softball Sweeps Salem State

Standish, ME – Hitting was the key for the Saint Joseph's College softball team in its sweep of Salem State College on Wednesday. The wins extend the SJC streak to four victories in a row as they improve to 13-16 overall.

The Monks received a four-hitter from SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) to take the first game of the doubleheader, 9-1, and SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) earned a 7-6 extra-inning win in game two.

St. Joe’s got on the board early and often in game one, plating five runs in the first two innings. After singles by FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) and Burrola, JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) hit a 2-RBI double and went home on a double by FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA). SR Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) singled to score Linden and make it 4-0. SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) scored off a single by Burrola in the fifth inning to go up 5-0.

The Monks surrendered a walk to Kara Beauregard in the sixth and she went on to score the lone Salem State run of the game after a single by Jess Baird.

FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) ripped her second double of the season as the Monks plated four more runs on three hits in the 6th to end the game.

Willis, Burrola, SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) and FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., ME) had two hits apiece.

Game two was a different story as the Monks fell behind early and had to mount an exciting comeback to tie the game and force and extra inning.

The Vikings jumped out with four runs on five hits in the first.

SR Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) singled home SR Jamie Morrison (Auburn, ME) to make it 4-1 in the second. Salem added another run in the third but the Monks went to work in the bottom of the inning with two more runs after RBI-singles by Morrison and van der Linden made it 5-3.

Ludwig singled to start the seventh and scored off another Morrison hit. Roy ripped a 2-out RBI single to tie the game and force an extra frame.

Both teams had their opportunity beginning the eighth inning with a runner placed on second base. The Vikings scored a run off two hits in their half of the inning to put the pressure on the Monks. Soucy took second base for St. Joe’s and went on to tie the game after Martin reached on an error. Kimball drew a walk and Ludwig took first on a fielder’s choice that put Martin out at third. After Willis flew out for the second out, Burrola drilled an RBI double to give the Monks the win.

Morrison was 3/3 with 2 RBI and a run while van der Linden and Martin had two hits apiece in the win.

St. Joe’s plays a doubleheader at Maine Farmington on 4/26 beginning at 3:00.


4/23/07 - Monks Pound out 23 Hits to Sweep Lyndon State
Ludwig and Farrell Perfect at the Plate in Game 1

Standish, ME – The SJC softball squad took advantage of red-hot hitting to post a 10-2, 4-0 sweep of Lyndon State on Monday. SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) was 4/4 and JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) was 3/3 to lead the Monks in game 1.

St. Joe’s had a season-high 18 hits in the opener and SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) earned her seventh win. The Monks got to work early after Ludwig hit a lead-off single and stole second. FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) singled and stole second and Ludwig went on to score on the throw. Burrola ripped a 2-RBI homer to put St. Joe’s up 3-0.

The Hornets closed the gap in the second with two runs on three hits but St. Joe’s kept the pressure on adding 4 more runs in the bottom of the inning. Ludwig and Willis both singled and Ludwig scored on an error and Farrell singled to score Willis. FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) drilled a 2-RBI double to make it 8-2.

An RBI-single by SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) in the fourth gave the Monks a comfortable 9-2 lead, but St. Joe’s plated two more runs in the fifth. FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., ME) notched her second single of the game and scored on a single by FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) and SR Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) singled and scored on a hit by FY Christy Wezowicz (Granville, MA).

Willis and van der Linden finished 2/3 for the Monks.

In game 2, SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) went the distance, allowing just 6 hits and earning the win for the Monks. Roy was the story, finishing 2/2 with a triple, 2 RBI and a run. After two scoreless innings, the Monks offense got to work in the third. Burrola cracked a 2-RBI double after Roy singled and Willis reached on an error to give St. Joe’s a 2-0 lead.

St. Joe’s extended the lead in the fourth as van der Linden singled, went to second on a wild pitch and third on a fielder’s choice. Roy crushed a 2-RBI triple to secure the win for the Monks.


4/22/07 - Monks Drop Two at Suffolk

Boston, MA – The SJC softball squad dropped a pair of games at Suffolk on Sunday 4-1 and 9-4. SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) struck out 7 in the game one loss.

JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) hit an RBI single to score FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) who had reached on a single to put the Monks up 1-0 in the first.

Suffolk tied the game with a run in the fourth and exploded for three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

The Monks jumped out to an early lead in the second inning of game two after SR Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) sent Farrell home with an RBI single and FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) scored off a sacrifice fly by SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME).

St. Joe’s added two runs in the third on three hits. SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) got things started with a lead-off triple and Willis added a single. Farrell hit a 2-RBI triple to put the Monks up 4-0.

Suffolk took advantage of two walks and 4 hits in the third to jump out to a 6-4 lead. The Rams added three more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

The Monks were led by Farrell (2/3) and Willis (2/4).


4/21/07 - St. Joe’s Shut Out by Colby

Waterville, ME – The Monks were shut out 2-0 and 2-0 on Saturday at Colby. In Game 1, SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) hurled a one-hitter, but the SJC offense was unable to offer support.

Colby’s Lindsey Toomey allowed just three hits and added 2 strikeouts. Burrola, FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) and SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) each had a hit for the Monks.

SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) took the mound for St. Joe’s in game two. After five and half scoreless innings, the Mules plated two runs off two hits in the sixth. SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) led the Monks with two hits and van der Linden and FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) added a hit apiece.


4/16/07 - Burrola named Association of Division III Independents
Softball Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Joseph’s College (Maine) sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, N.M.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents Softball Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Burrola picked up three wins this week as the Monks went 4-3. She struck out eight and allowed just six hits with a walk in a 4-2 win over Plymouth and had an 8-0, one-hit shutout over Maine Maritime with 13 strikeouts. Burrola also earned a 5-0, shutout victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle, allowing just seven hits and one walk and recording seven strikeouts.


4/15/07 - Softball Wins Third in a Row, Defeats UMPI

Standish, ME – As the team’s hitting took a giant leap for the better, the SJC softball team earned three big wins this weekend. The Monks followed up Saturday’s two-game sweep at Maine Maritime with a 5-0 home victory over Maine-Presque Isle on Sunday. This marks three wins in a row for St. Joe’s.

SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) (6-5) struck out 7 as the Monks improve to 9-12 overall.

SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) drilled a lead-off single and stole second and third. FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) walked and stole second as Ludwig stole home. Linden went on to score on an error to put the Monks up 2-0.

St. Joe’s scored two runs off four hits in the second after singles by SR Sarah Martin (Athol, MA), Ludwig, and FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME). Burrola hit a 2-RBI single to make it 4-0.

The Monks added to the lead in the sixth after Burrola hit her ninth double of the year and Linden sent her home with an RBI single.

Ludwig finished 2/4 with 2 runs, Burrola was 2/4 with 1 run and 2 RBI, and van der Linden was 2/3 with a run and an RBI.


4/14/07 - Softball Picks up Road Sweep at Maritime
Farrell and Ludwig Power Monks past Mariners

Castine, ME – Hot bats helped the SJC softball team to an 8-0 and 4-3 sweep of Maine Maritime in Saturday’s doubleheader. The Monks improve to 8-12 on the season.

In game 1, SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) recorded 13 strikeouts and earned her fifth win. St. Joe’s opened the game with a single by SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) who went on to score after two wild pitches. JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) and SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) added RBI singles to put the Monks up 3-0.

The offense kept working in the fourth as SR Jaime Daugherty (Bass Harbor, ME) reached on an error and moved to third on sacrifices by Ludwig and FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME). Daugherty scored on a single by Burrola and FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) followed with a single. Farrell crushed a 2-RBI triple make it 6-0.

The Monks extended the lead with two more runs in the sixth as Ludwig singled and scored on a wild pitch and Burrola sent Willis home with a sacrifice fly.

Ludwig and Farrell were 3/3 for St. Joe’s.

SR Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) picked up the win in game 2, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 2.

Willis put the Monks on the board in the first after a single and was helped by two passed balls and a wild pitch. The Mariners plated a run in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 1-1.

St. Joe’s took advantage of doubles by Burrola, van der Linden and FY Kayla Soucy (Colebrook, NH) to take a 3-1 lead in the third. Maritime responded with a run in the sixth and the Monks added a run in the 7th to keep a 4-2 advantage. The Mariners plated one more run in the 7th but St. Joe’s closed out the game for the win.

The Monks were led by Ludwig (2/4), Willis (2/4), Burrola (2/4) and SO Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME) (2/3).


4/11/07 - Monks Split with Plymouth State

Standish, ME - The St. Joe’s softball team took a 4-2 win over Plymouth State University in game one and dropped game two 2-1. The Monks stand at 6-12 while the Panthers improve to 10-9 overall.

The SJC offense got off to a quick start, plating two runs on three hits in the first inning. SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) singled and scored off a double by FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) and JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) singled to score van der Linden.

SR Sarah Martin (Athol, MA) went 3 for 4 in the game and singled to open the bottom of the second and scored on a single by van der Linden to make it 3-0.

The Panthers picked up two runs in the fourth to close the gap to 3-2 but the Monks responded with a run in the sixth. Ludwig drew a walk, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and went on to steal third. This set up van der Linden for her third RBI hit of the game to score Ludwig.

SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) sealed the win with two of her eight strike outs for St. Joe’s. FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., ME) went 2/2 for the Monks.

In game two, Burrola ripped a double in the first inning, but the Monks were unable to string hits together in the early innings and it was scoreless until the fourth. The Panthers recorded two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to go up 2-0.

St. Joe’s rallied in the sixth as Burrola singled and van der Linden reached on an error. Farrell reached on a fielder’s choice and Burrola went on to score. SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) drew a walk with two outs but the Monks fell short as Plymouth pitcher Kate Roland notched her ninth strike out to end the game.

The Monks return to action on Saturday, April 14,for a doubleheader at Maine Maritime beginning at 1:00 p.m.


4/10/07 - SJC Softball Drops Two to USM

Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College softball squad lost a pair of games, 8-0 and 13-0 yesterday afternoon. The Monks fall to 5-11 on the season while USM improves to 6-10 overall.

St. Joe’s looked strong until the fourth inning. The Huskies took advantage of a walk and an error to set up FR Magan Blais (Sabattus, ME) for a 3 RBI blast over center field. The Huskies extended the lead with a run in the 5th and two in the 6th and 7th.

SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) struck out four for the Monks in the loss and added a double. FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA), JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) and FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., ME) all had singles for St. Joe’s.

The Huskies got on the board early in game two, plating a run in the first and two runs in the second. USM exploded for 10 runs on 8 hits in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The St. Joe’s offense continued to struggle in game 2 as SR Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) had the only hit. Senior Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) struck out 3 and took the loss for the Monks.


3/31/07 - Monks Sweep Husson in Home Opener
Burrola Fans 13 in Game 1

Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College softball team swept Husson College 2-1 and 9-8 in their home opener today. The Monks improve to 5-9 overall.

Sophomore standout Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) hurled a career-high 13 strikeouts in game one and is 3-4 on the season. Burrola began the game by striking out the side and the Monks looked strong in the bottom of the inning with one out and bases loaded but Husson’s JR Ashlee Paschal (Jefferson, NH) pitched her way out of the inning.

Burrola struck out two more batters in the second and FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) put the Monks up 1-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Eagles SO Jenny Rollins (Corinth, ME) tied the game with a home run in the 5th and a double by JR Jordan Pruett (Manchester, ME) threatened the Monk lead but Burrola struck out her 11th batter to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 6th, FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) ripped her second double of the game and SR Amanda Roy (Winslow, ME) moved her to third with a single. SO Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME) hit into a fielder’s choice to score van der Linden and the Monks held on for the win.

Rollins went 2/3 for the Eagles and Roy and van der Linden were 2/3 for the Monks.

Senior captain Colleen Delahanty (Warren, ME) took the mound for game 2 and SR catcher Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME) made a great defensive play in the first, throwing out FY Jenika Kelly (Livermore, ME) at third as she tried to advance on a passed ball.

The Eagles took a 5-0 lead in the second, thanks to some clutch hitting by SO Shannon Pietras (Chester, ME) and a 2 RBI double by SO Nikita Colgan (Swanton, VT).

The Monks got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third as Burrola hit an RBI double and scored off a van der Linden single to make it 5-2. With bases loaded, FY Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp., ME) was robbed of an extra base hit by Rollins to end the inning.

The SJC offense continued to work in the fifth, loading the bases and plating another run on a single by SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME). Two batters later, van der Linden drove in two more runs to tie the game. Roy followed with a single to put the Monks up 6-5.

Husson knotted the game with an RBI double by Pruett and took the lead after a single by FY Brittni Adams (Bucksport, ME). Adams went on to score and make it 8-6 in favor of the Eagles.

The Monks regained control in the sixth after two walks and an infield single put runners on and Burrola cleared the bases with a double for a 9-8 advantage. Burrola returned to the mound to close out the final inning for St. Joe’s.

Sophomore Michelle Mulherin (Milo, ME) was 2/3 with 3 RBI and JR Shawna Bell (Corinth, ME) and Pruett went 2/4 for the Eagles. St. Joe’s was led by Burrola (2/4, 4 RBI), Ludwig (3/4, 1 RBI) and Willis (2/3).

The Monks return to action on Tuesday, 4/3 in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Thomas College.


3/30/07 - Monks Drop Two at Brandeis
Farrell’s Blast hits Commuter Train

Waltham, MA- The SJC softball squad dropped a pair of games at Brandeis on Friday. In a 9-0 game one decision, the Monks struggled to get their offense going while the Judges recorded three home runs. JR Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) led St. Joe’s with two hits while FY Anna Willis (Gorham, ME), SO Aly Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) and FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, MA) each added a hit apiece.

The Monks jumped out to an early lead but fell 12-2 in game two. Willis and Ludwig reached on bunts and SO Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, NM) moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Farrell hit into a fielder’s choice to plate Willis and give St. Joe’s their only lead of the game.

Brandeis responded in the bottom of the second, sending 11 hitters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Streilein plated two runs in the inning with a one-out single. McWilliams went deep in the third to give the hosts an 8-1 lead.

Farrell answered in the top of the fourth with a huge blast to left-center field that actually hit the wheels of a passing MBTA commuter rail train. The Judges put the contest away in the bottom of the inning when McWilliams hit her second homer of the day, a grand slam to almost the identical spot as her first blast.

SR Tessa Grindle (Brooksville, ME), Ludwig and Willis all finished with one hit apiece for the Monks.


3/19/07 -Burrola Named Association of DIII Independents
Softball Player of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – St. Joseph’s College (Maine) sophomore pitcher/second baseman Gabrielle Burrola (Gallup, N.M.) has been named the Association of Division III Independents softball Player of the Week for the week ending 3/18/07.

On the week, Burrola earned a pair of wins on the mound, including a 6-2 victory over Skidmore by striking out seven and giving up eight hits. In an 8-0 win over Eastern Nazarene, she fanned seven in the no-hitter. Burrola also led the team with 12 hits (.387) and had three doubles and five runs batted in.

She is coached by Jamie Smyth.


SPRING TRAINING NEWS

3/17/07 - SJC Softball Splits on St. Patrick's Day

Fort Myers, FL - Well, the "luck o' the Irish" was with Saint Joseph's for a while today as the Lady Monks split on the day, defeating Eastern Nazarene College 8-0, with sophomore Gavi Burrola (2-3) pitching that no-hitter for St. Joe's (play-by-play).

Game Two saw St. Joe's facing the same Ohio Wesleyan team they had faced on their first day of play in sunny Florida and the result today was the same. A seventh-inning rally just wasn't enough and the ladies dropped a tough one, 7-11. Senior Colleen Delahanty (1-4) took the loss for SJC.

The team returns to Maine tomorrow with a record of 3-7, but the week has been one of finding chemistry, and has highlighted not only a few weaknesses, but the team's many strengths, so Coach Smyth is focusing in on those areas that can be improved and aiming to keep the strengths in the spotlight. Look for this team of bright, enthusiastic young women to make their mark!


3/16/07 - St. Joe's Softball Suffers Setback

Cape Coral, FL - After a successful day on Thursday, booking a pair of wins, the Lady Monks found themselves floundering again at the hands of two New England teams, Roger Williams University (RI) and Framingham State College (MA).

St. Joes was able to pull off only one run in each of the games, losing the opener to Roger Williams 1-6 (play-by-play), and game two to Framingham 1-7 (play-by-play)Gabrielle Burrola and Colleen Delahanty pitched the two games, respectively; newcomer Christy Wezowicz saw time on the mound in each game as well.


3/15/07 - SJC Softball Revs Up - Wins 2

Cape Coral, FL - Lady Monks Softball got it going today, winning two at the Northwest Cape Coral Sports Complex. They took down Skidmore College (NY) 6-2 and went on to rout Mount Ida College (MA) 12-2 in five innings.

Sophomore Gabrielle Burrola got the win vs. Skidmore (play-by-play) and vet Colleen Delahanty took the game vs. Mount Ida (play-by-play).


3/13/07 -  SJC Softball Drops Two

Cape Coral, FL - Another tough day for SJC Softball (0-4). After a good start vs. Illinois College, the team seemed to lose momentum and the hot bats of Illinois took charge (play-by-play), with Illinois defeating St. Joe's 7-1. Gabrielle Burrola took the loss for the Royal Blue. A long break between games may have affected the Lady Monks, as Rutgers-Newark (NJ) overwhelmed them in game two, winning 13-0 after five innings (play-by-play), the game being called under the "mercy" rule. The loss went to Colleen Delahanty.

The team takes Wednesday off and will face Skidmore College (NY) and Mount Ida College (MA) at 1 and 3 PM, respectively, on Thursday, March 15 at the Northwest Cape Coral Sports Complex, Cape Coral, FL.


3/12/07 - A Slow Start, but SJC Softball Showing Promise

Cape Coral, FL - Saint Joseph's Softball got off to a rough start today, but howed the promise of better times ahead. The newest members, a corps of 5 talented freshmen, stepped into their first collegiate experience with great zest and enthusiasm, playing like it was nothing new to them, and the seasoned group of 11 returners led the newcomers with an attitude of confidence and a positive spirit.

We all know that the first time outside of the gym each spring for we New England teams, playing on a real softball field, is always a test, and so it was as Saint Joseph's College (0-2) started off its 2007 season with a tough 5-4 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University (2-0). Frosh Jillian Kimball (Albany Twp, Me.) whacked a leadoff double in her college softball debut! Sophomore pitcher Gabrielle Burrola(Gallup, N.M.) took the loss for St. Joe's (play-by-play).

However, the Lady Monks took a deep breath, regrouped, and tried again, but it was not to be. The Owls of Keene State College (NH) denied Saint Joseph's in five innings of play, the game being called under the 8-run rule with Keene defeating Saint Joseph's 11-2 at the Northwest Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Florida. Veteran Colleen Delahanty (Warren, Me.) took the second loss for St. Joe's; rookie Christy Wezowicz (Granville, Mass.), in her collegiate debut, faced 3 batters striking out one and allowing no hits. Other highlights of today's games were the terrific defensive plays provided by FY Anna Willis (Gorham, Me.) and FY Liddy van der Linden (Worcester, Mass.)The ladies will be back in action tomorrow, March 12, at the Cape Coral Sports Complex facing Illinois College at 9 AM and Rutgers-Newark University at 1 PM.
