10/25/07 - Monks Fall to Nor'easters

Biddeford, ME - Saint Joseph's College fell victim to the University of New England Nor'easters, 3-0 (30-22,30-19,30-16) on Thursday. The Nor'easters continue to prove that there is no cooking like home cooking, as they have now won an incredible 14 consecutive home matches.

FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, N.H.) paced the Monks with six kills and 14 digs, while setter SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, N.H.) dished out 16 assists. SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, Maine) recorded three aces for St. Joe's, which heads to Albertus Magnus College Saturday for a GNAC tri-match with Emmanuel College.


10/23/07 - Monks Defeated by UM-Farmington, 3-1

Farmington, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Monks Volleyball team lost to the UM-Farmington Beavers on Tuesday, 3-1 (24-30,24-30,30-28,27-30).

The Monks were lead by SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) who had a career high 5 blocks and 9 kills in the game. SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) posted a double-double in the match with 14 assists and 14 digs. FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) added 4 aces and 11 digs and JR Amanda Ruel (Biddeford, ME) scored 10 digs for the day.

The Monks Volleyball team next takes the court on Thursday, 10/25 in Biddeford, ME vs. the University of New England. The match begins at 6:00 PM


10/21/07 – Monks Lose Two in GNAC Play

Standish, ME - Saint Joseph's College continued their busy weekend by playing host to GNAC opponents Lasell College and Simmons College in a Tri-match on Sunday. The Monks played the Lasell College Lasers in the first match and lost 3-0. FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) notched 16 digs and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) recorded 16 assists in the effort.

St. Joe’s faced the Simmons College Sharks in the second match and fell, 3-1. FY Mary Hoyt played very well and paced the Monks with 19 digs while adding 7 kills. SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) chipped in with 11 digs and 6 kills. SO Monique Lajoie finished with 12 assists in the match.

Saint Joseph's College (4-22, 0-11 GNAC) travels to UM-Farmington on Tuesday 10/23 to take on the Beavers. Game time is 7:00 PM.


10/20/07 – Volleyball Suffers Two Losses at Norwich Tri-match

Northfield, VT – The Saint Joseph's College Volleyball participated in a Tri-match against two GNAC opponents on Saturday. In the first match St. Joe’s faced off against the Norwich University Cadets and lost 3-0. The Monks were lead by SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) with 7 kills, FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) who registered 15 digs, and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) with 17 assists.

The Monks (4-20, 0-9 GNAC) were defeated in the second match, 3-0, by the Pine Manor College Gators. FY Mary Hoyt continued playing at a high level with 6 kills and 15 digs against the Gators. FY Lindsay McCarthy (Waterville, ME) added 19 assists while FY Rachel Bassett (Narragansett, RI) chipped in 11 digs.


10/13/07 - Monks defeated twice in U Maine Maritime Tri-match

Castine, ME - The Monks Women squared off against the UMaine Machias Clippers (21-7, 5-2 Sunrise Conf.) in the first match and were defeated by a score of 3-0 (30-11, 30-26, 30-16).FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) led the Monks with 7 kills, SO Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) had 12 assists, and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) pitched in with 17 digs.

The Monks faced the Maine Maritime Lady Mariners (12-5, 5-1 NAC) in their second match of the day and were defeated 3-0
(30-22, 30-12, 30-26). St. Joe's was led by SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) who added 6 kills and SO Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) who had 9 assists.

The SJC Women (4-18, 0-7 GNAC) next travel to Northfield, VT on Saturday, 10/20 to face conference foes Norwich (11-7, 6-4 GNAC) and Pine Manor (8-14, 2-6 GNAC) in a Tr-match. Game one begins at 1:00 PM, game two is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.


10/10/07 – Monks Top Terriers

Waterville, ME – The SJC Volleyball team was on a mission to end a 5-match losing skid and on Wednesday night against Thomas College they accomplished their goal. The Monks (4-16, 0-7 GNAC) defeated the Terriers (0-12) in three straight sets 30-27, 30-29, 30-19 for a much needed victory.

SJC was led by SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH), who posted yet another stellar match with 4 aces, 10 kills and an incredible 19 digs. FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) chipped in with 3 aces and 8 kills. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) added 8 digs and SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) posted 5 kills and 3 aces in the winning effort.
The Monks will travel to Castine, ME Saturday 10/13 to take on Maine-Machias (12:30) and Maine Maritime (2:00) in the Maine Maritime Tri-match.


10/6/07 – Volleyball Team Drops Two at Rivier Trimatch

Nashua, NH – The Monks (3-16, 0-7 GNAC) played St. Joseph College of Connecticut in the first contest and lost 3-0 (30-10, 30-24, 30-22). The Monks faced off against GNAC foe Rivier College (13-8, 7-0 GNAC) in the second match and were defeated 3-0 (30-6, 30-22, 30-16).

SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) recorded 21 digs for the day and FYMary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) tallied 8 service aces and 9 kills in the two matches. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) also provided 18 assists on the day.

The Monks travel to Waterville Wednesday, 10/10 to take on the Thomas College Terriers. The match begins at 7:00 PM.


10/3/07 - Volleyball Falls to Maine Maritime

Standish, ME – The Monks (3-14, 0-5) dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Maine Maritime last night at the Alfond Center. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) dished out a career-high 23 assists in the loss.

The Mariners took an early 2-0 lead winning the first games 30-17 and 30-21, but St. Joe’s battled back in game three earning a 30-26 win. Maritime closed out the match 30-18 in game four.

FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) had 9 kills, 25 digs, and 3 service aces and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) added 8 kills, 14 digs and 2 service aces. SR Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) chipped in with 5 kills, 7 digs and 2 service aces.

St. Joe’s travels to Rivier College for a GNAC tri-match on Saturday, October 6th with Saint Joseph’s College of CT beginning at 11 AM.


9/29/07 -  Monks Drop Two at Babson Trimatch

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College women’s volleyball team powered its way to a pair of victories on Saturday, as the Beavers celebrated their annual Back To Babson Weekend with a 3-1 win over Newbury College and a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph’s College of Maine. Between Babson victories, Newbury defeated St. Joseph’s by a score of 3-0.


Newbury received 14 kills from sophomore Sandra Karalekas (East Longmeadow, Mass.) as the Nighthawks posted a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph’s. Newbury first-year Amy Chen (Chelmsford, Mass.) tossed in seven aces and sophomore Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, Mass.) added 29 assists. Sophomore Monique Lajoie (Nashua, N.H.) paced St. Joseph’s with five kills and 17 digs, sophomore Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, N.H.) also recorded five kills, and first-year Mary Hoyt (Rochester, Mass.) chipped in with 17 digs and 10 service aces.

In the final match of the day, Babson used eight kills and eight aces from O’Neill and seven kills from senior captain Mandi Blackmer (Honeoye, N.Y.) to tally a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s. Glassner contributed five aces and 25 assists in the victory, while first-year Kathyrn Alea (Southborough, Mass.) added seven digs. Hoyt led the Monks with 13 digs, Gowen dished out 11 assists, and Lajoie notched seven kills.

9/26/07 - Volleyball Takes 3-1 Win over Farmington

Standish, ME – The SJC volleyball team earned a well-deserved 3-1 victory over the visiting Maine-Farmington Beavers tonight. St. Joe’s moves to 3-11 overall with the 30-21, 19-30, 30-26, 30-22 win.

GNAC Volleyball Player of the Week SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) had a team-high 11 kills, a pair of service aces and added 11 digs. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) had 16 assists, 4 service aces and 11 digs while FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) recorded 6 kills, 7 service aces and 15 digs.

The Monks play a trimatch at Babson College with Newbury College on Saturday, September 29th at 2:30 and 4:30PM.


9/25/07 - Monks Earn Weekly GNAC Honors

Two Saint Joseph's College athletes were honored by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for the week ending September 23, 2007: FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) for women’s soccer and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) for volleyball.

Lajoie was named Player of the Week in volleyball after turning in several personal best performances last week, including a season-high 24 digs against Daniel Webster and 11 kills against Suffolk.


9/23/07 - Monks Edged by Suffolk

Standish, ME – Visiting Suffolk University picked up a 3-1 volleyball win over the Monks on Sunday. Saint Joseph's College stands at 2-11 overall and 0-5 GNAC.

St. Joe’s jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one and stayed on top 12-6 thanks to several great sets by SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) and kills by SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH). Suffolk fought back behind the strong play of Noel Moran and Aly Brain and took game one 30-24.

Game two was highlighted by several lead changes as the Monks were fueled by the strong play of FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) and FY Rachel Bassett (Narragansett, RI). The Rams took a 26-16 lead and despite 5 consecutive points from Lajoie’s serve were still able to earn a 30-22 win.

The Monks put the pressure on in game after some great sets by Gowan. St. Joe’s held a slim 18-16 lead but the teams battled and tied the score at 26. Key serves by JR Amanda Ruel (Biddeford, ME) helped St. Joe’s take a 30-26 win.

Suffolk got off to a strong start in game four and held a 20-14 and proved too strong taking the final game 30-17 to close out the match.

St. Joe’s was led by Lajoie (11 kills, 20 digs, 3 service aces), Gowen (20 assists, 11 digs) and Hoyt (6 kills, 27 digs).

The Monks host Maine-Farmington on Wednesday, September 26th at 7 PM.


9/22/07 - Monks Drop Pair in GNAC Tri-Match

Standish, ME – The SJC volleyball squad hosted Emerson College and Daniel Webster College in a GNAC tri-match on Saturday. Despite dropping both matches, the Monks showed real improvement and continued to make strides.

Emerson 3, SJC 0

In the 11:00 AM match, St. Joe’s fell to Emerson 3-0. The Lions utilized their size and took the first game 30-19. After jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in game two, the Emerson team was tested by the aggressive play of SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) and SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) before taking a 30-26 win.

The Monks took an early lead in game three behind SO Amanda Ruel’s (Biddeford, ME) serve and the great defensive play of Gowan and FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH). The Lions responded taking a 14-10 lead and closed out the match 30-21.

St. Joe’s was led by Lajoie (8 kills, 14 digs and 3 service aces), Gowan (13 assists, 3 digs) and Hoyt (5 kills, 11 digs and 2 service aces).

Daniel Webster 3, SJC 0

Daniel Webster defeated the Monks 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-16) in the final match of the day. The teams battled in the first two games but the Eagles pulled away in game three.

St. Joe’s had big contributions from Gowan (18 assists, 5 digs, and 2 kills), Lajoie (24 digs, 9 kills) and Hoyt (16 digs, 6 kills, 4 service aces).

SR captain Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) chipped in with 5 kills and 5 digs.


9/20/07 - Monks Topped by UNE

Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College volleyball squad fell 3-0 to the University of New England tonight. The Nor’easters took control early and closed out the match quickly 30-8, 30-15, and 30-11.

The Monks are 2-8 overall, 0-2 GNAC while UNE is 3-7 overall.

St. Joe’s hosts Emerson College and Daniel Webster in a GNAC tri-match on Saturday, September 22, beginning at 11 AM and UNE travels to Colby on 9/24 for a 6 PM match.


9/18/07 - Volleyball Falls to Lesley

Standish, ME – The SJC volleyball squad lost to visiting Lesley University 3-1 tonight. They now stand at 2-7 overall, 0-2 GNAC, while Lesley improves to 1-5, 0-2 NAC.

The Lynx took the first two games (30-23, 30-21), but the Monks rallied and won game three 30-24. The momentum shift was brief, however, as Lesley closed out the match with a 30-17 win in game four.

SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) turned in a tremendous performance on the evening, finishing with 18 digs, 10 kills and 4 assists. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) had 7 kills, 13 assists, 2 service aces and 3 digs while FR Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) continued to impress with 7 kills, 12 digs, 3 assists and 2 service aces.

St. Joe’s hosts the University of New England on Thursday, September 20th at
6 p.m.


9/15/07 - Volleyball Drops Pair of GNAC Matches

Newton, MA – The young Monk squad competed in their first GNAC Tri-match of the season and picked up a pair of losses on Saturday at Mount Ida College.

St. Joe’s fell 3-0 (30-18, 30-17, 30-14) to host Mount Ida in the first match of the day. SO Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) led the Monks with six kills, seven assists and two digs. FY Rachel Bassett (Narragansett, RI) had four kills, one service ace and three digs while SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) had seven assists.

The troubles continued in the second match as St. Joe’s lost 3-0 (30-11, 30-12, 30-18) to Johnson & Wales. Lajoie (5 kills, 4 digs) and Gowen (4 assists, 4 digs) provided the only bright spot for the Monks.

St. Joe’s hosts Lesley University on Tuesday, September 18th at 7:30 PM.


9/14/07 - Volleyball Downed by Regis

Weston, MA – The SJC volleyball squad lost a closely-contested match at Regis College on Friday. Despite a 3-0 loss, each game went the distance as the Monks fell 30-23, 30-18 and 30-27.

FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) led the Monks with nine kills and two service aces and SO Megan Brennan (Quincy, MA) had six kills. SO Marcie Gowan (Plymouth, NH) chipped in with seven assists and three service aces.


9/11/07 - Monks Tossed by Husson

Bangor, ME – The Eagles evened their record at 4-4 with a 3-1 win over Saint Joseph's College (2-3). Husson rallied after losing the first game to come back and win three straight.

Husson was led by Rachel Russell (SR, Trenton, ME) with 10 kills, 4 digs, and 4 service aces. NAC Player of the Week Cassandra O’Neil (Manchester, NH) had 11 kills and 4 digs. Marion Kish (Wallingford, CT) added 26 assists, 10 services aces and 4 kils.

Saint Joseph was paced by Mary Hoyt (FY, Rochester, NH) with 9 kills, 6 service aces and 4 digs. Monique Lajoie (SO, Nashua, NH) chipped in 4 kills, 10 assists, and 6 digs while Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) added 10 assists and 8 digs.

Husson next opens conference play as they travel to Elms College on Saturday, September 15. They will face Elms at 11:00 a.m. and then play Lesley College, MA at 1:00 p.m. Saint Joseph's College travels to Regis College on Friday, September 14 at 5:00 p.m.

9/8/07 -  Volleyball Picks up a Win on Day Two

Standish, ME – The Monks lost to Maine-Machias 3-0 on Saturday morning in the SJC Autumn Invitational, but won the consolation match-up against Maine-Presque Isle 3-1. Machias defeated Lyndon State 3-1 in the championship.

For the day, St. Joe’s (2-2) had solid contributions from captains Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) (13 kills, 2 assists, 3 service aces and 6 digs) and Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH) (11 kills, 26 assists, 13 service aces and 4 digs).

Two newcomers also had strong performances, Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) finished with 18 kills, 4 assists, 11 service aces, and 11 digs while Rachel Bassett (Narragansett, RI) added 13 kills, 1 assist, 5 service aces and 5 digs.

The Monks next play at Husson on Tuesday, September 11 at 7 p.m.

9/7/07 - SJC Volleyball 1-1 on Opening Day

Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College volleyball squad opened the season with a 1-1 start in the SJC Autumn Invitational. The Monks dropped their first match 3-0 to Lyndon State, but rebounded quickly to defeat Maine-Presque Isle 3-0 in their second match of the evening.

Maine-Machias used strong serving to power past Maine Presque Isle 3-0 (30-18, 30-8 and 30-27) and defeated Lyndon State 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 25-30, 30-15)

SJC vs. Lyndon State

The Monks fell 3-0 to Lyndon State in the 6 PM match-up on court one. The Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but FY Mary Hoyt (Rochester, NH) used a powerful serve to make it 6-5. Lyndon pulled away again, but SR captain Brooke Perry (Biddeford, ME) kept St. Joe’s in the game. Two aces by FY Rachel Bassett (Narragansett, RI) closed the gap to one point, 25-24 but the Hornets took the game 30-25.

In game two, St. Joe’s took advantage of strong play by SO captain Monique Lajoie (Nashua, NH), superb setting by SO Marcie Gowen (Plymouth, NH) and back-to-back service aces by Hoyt. Bassett and Perry dominated at the net and evened the score at 15 before a Lyndon rally proved too much and St. Joe’s fell 30-26.

The teams traded points in game three but the Hornets pulled away, making it 14-10 after several strong serves. The Monks went down 19-13 and took a timeout to regroup, but Lyndon continued to stretch the lead to 25-15. St. Joe’s made a run behind Hoyt’s serving and the score stood at 26-23 but the Hornets took the final game 30-23.

SJC vs. Maine Presque Isle

The SJC team continued to come together in their second match of the evening cruising by Presque Isle 3-0. The Monks took a 7-2 lead and Lajoie and Perry connected several times to go up 14-8. The Owls fought back and brought the score to 17-16, but Hoyt answered with two aces and St. Joe’s took the game 30-25 after an ace by JR Amanda Ruel (Biddeford, ME).

Strong team play helped the Monks take game two, 30-19 and Lajoie and Perry continued to shine.

Gowan started game three with an ace, but the lead changed several times with St. Joe’s eventually holding a five point lead. The Owls closed to within a point, 24-23, but Bassett put the Monks up by three and St. Joe’s closed out the match winning game three 31-29.


8/22/07 - Razsa Returns to Saint Joseph’s

Saint Joseph's College announced today that John Razsa was named head women’s volleyball coach. He replaces Jenn Leighton who resigned to pursue other interests.

Razsa, a former SJC volleyball coach from 1992 through the 1997 season, returns to Standish with a wealth of volleyball experience and currently directs Portland North, Southern Maine’s Junior Olympic volleyball program.

During his time at St. Joe’s, Razsa compiled a 106-90 record, was named the Maine Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading St. Joseph's to a school record 27-10 mark, and guided the Monks to the MAC championship and the NAIA regional tournament in Pittsburgh in 1996 and 1997. He was also named the MAC Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1997, and the State of Maine Intercollegiate Volleyball Coach of the Year in '96 and '97.

In addition to his stint at St. Joe’s, Razsa served as head coach at Southern Maine from 2003-2005 and was selected by his peers as the 2003 Coach of the Year in the Little East Conference and led the USM Huskies to a 19-12 overall record that year.

Razsa also won multiple Maine State Volleyball Association Championships leading the boy’s and girl’s teams at Gray-New Gloucester High School in the late 80’s and mid 90’s.

“We are very pleased to have Coach Razsa join our staff. His years of experience and his involvement with volleyball throughout the state of Maine will greatly enhance our staff and the student-athletes’ experience,” said Brian Curtin, Director of Athletics at Saint Joseph's College. “John is a leader who can help our volleyball program take another positive step.”

A 1982 graduate of USM with a B.S. in Education, Razsa holds coaching Level I and II certifications from the United States Volleyball Association (USVA) and has taught in the Lisbon (Maine) school system.

Saint Joseph’s College athletic department sponsors 14 NCAA Division III teams and is entering its first year as a full member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
