Jillian Leger '08
STANDISH, ME – Senior defender Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA) of the Saint Joseph's College women’s soccer team has been named to the NCAA D III All-New England Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Leger is the lone representative of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference out of the 44 New England region players honored by the NSCAA.

Earlier this year, Leger was named as a GNAC First Team All Conference defender and also received GNAC All-Tournament honors. In addition, Leger was the recipient of the Saint Joseph's College team MVP award following the conclusion of the 2007 season.

As a junior Leger earned nominations to the All-Independent Women's Soccer First Team and the D3 Kicks All-New England Second Team. After her sophomore year she was named to the All-Independent Women's Soccer team as well.

Leger has been a 4-year starting Defender and 2-year Captain for Head Women's Soccer Coach Michael Bolanz. During her time as a player for St. Joe's the team has amassed a 50-24-4 (.676) record including a 16-2-3 season in her senior year, the best in the program's history.

In her four seasons donning a St. Joe’s uniform, Leger played in 71 games, scored 2 goals with 13 assists for 17 total points and helped the Monks post a total of 35 shutouts.

“It's difficult for a defender to get the recognition Jill has received," adds Head Coach Michael Bolanz. "Jillian is certainly one of the best players to ever play here at Saint Joseph's College."

MIT Advances to Semifinal

STANDISH, ME – The Saint Joseph's College Monks faced off against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers on Wednesday in a ECAC D III Women’s Soccer Championship Quarterfinal match and lost in OT, 1-0. The game was well played with plenty of back and forth action but came to an abrupt ending when SR Janine Hopmans (Davis, CA) scored the game winner in the first minute of OT (90:57) off a pass from teammate SR Amy Ludlum (Mission Viejo, CA). Hopmans took the kick on the run from the right side and found the left corner of the net just past the Monks diving goalkeeper, Katye Mayo (SO, Fairfield, ME).

Mayo was very busy in net, making 12 stops in the match for the Monks. Engineers JR GK Stephanie Brenman (Newton, MA) was credited with 8 saves. SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) led St. Joe’s with four shots on net and gave the MIT defense a workout with her level of play. FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) posted 3 shots for the Monks in the game. JR Katie Jordan (Sandwich, MA) had an impressive game as well for St. Joe’s. The forward seemed to be in the middle of all the action and led the way for several scoring attempts.

The Saint Joseph's College Women’s Soccer team concludes their first season in the GNAC with a 12-1-2 conference record, 16-2-3 overall. MIT (13-6, 6-3 NEWMAC) advances to the semifinals to play the Brandeis/Emerson College winner on Saturday.

10/30/07 – Women’s Soccer Fails to Advance
Emerson College to Play in GNAC Final

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College hosted Emerson College in a GNAC Semifinal match on Tuesday and failed to advance. In the NCAA books, the contest will appropriately go down as a 2-2 tie, as neither team deserved to lose this playoff battle. Advancement by one team was necessary and decided by a best-of-five shootout after the overtime periods were played. The Monks scored on three of their attempts; the Emerson College players succeeded on four of five and move on to play Emmanuel College in the GNAC Championship game this Saturday.

Both teams came out of the gates playing with a high level of intensity. The Emerson College Lions who jumped out to an early lead with two goals within 40 seconds of each other in the 11th minute. The Monks responded well for a team that isn’t accustomed to being behind and applied tremendous offensive pressure for the remainder of the game. St. Joe’s finally got on the board in the 32nd minute when FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) took a pass from teammate SO Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, ME) and scored to make the score 2-1 Emerson.

The Lions defense held on to the slim lead until the 71st minute when FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) weaved her way thru several defenders to pass to a streaking SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) on the left side who scored on a diving kick to tie the game at two apiece.

The Monks had opportunities to take the lead in the remaining portion of regulation as well as both overtime periods, but Lions goalkeeper Katie Hartman made several acrobatic saves to turn the St. Joe’s chances away.

The Saint Joseph's College fans gathered around the perimeter of the soccer pitch to watch as the second overtime came to an end. The game was to be decided by way of a shootout: each team selects five players to kick from the penalty mark, the team who scores the most goals out of the five advances to the GNAC final. The Monks scored on 3 of 5 as SO Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, ME), FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) and FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) converted their attempts. Emerson College converted on 4 of 5 as SO Rachel Lerma found the back of the net on their 5th bid, allowing the Lions to advance.

The Monks finish their regular season with a record of 16-1-3, 12-1-2 GNAC. The Semifinal game is registered as a tie, not a loss:

Rule 7-AR74
A postseason game, except the national championship game, decided by the penalty kick tiebreaker is recorded as a draw, and the team scoring the greater number of goals advances to the next game.

10/30/07 – Monks Goalkeeper Earns GNAC Honors

Katye Mayo

STANDISH, ME – For the third time this season SO GK Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME) has received the GNAC Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week award. Mayo played 200 shutout minutes for the week of 10/2-10/28, including a 4-0 GNAC Quarterfinal victory over Albertus Magnus College on Saturday 10/27. 10/27/07 – Falcons Fall to Monks in GNAC Quarterfinal

Standish, ME – Neither the rainy weather nor the Albertus Magnus Falcons were enough to stop the Saint Joseph's College Women’s Soccer team in GNAC Quarterfinal play on Saturday. The Monks rolled over the Falcons, 4-0, and were led offensively by SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) who scored two goals and added an assist. The St. Joe’s defense played another outstanding game and SO GK Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME) made 3 saves in the shutout victory.

Although St. Joe’s was unable to convert on 3 prior corner kicks, the team found the right combination in the 12th minute when SR Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA) took a corner kick that SO Anna Willis headed into the back of the net. Willis made a great run to get into the play and score her first goal of the game to put the Monks ahead, 1-0.

Over the next 17 minutes Saint Joseph's College put 6 shots on net but was unable to convert. SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) had the best opportunity during this span when she drilled a kick off the right post and no one was able to take advantage of the rebound. One minute after this chance, in the 32nd minute, Willis hit paydirt and scored her second goal of the game off a perfect cross pass from teammate SO Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, ME) to put the Monks up by two.

Brianna Jordan added a goal of her own to go with her assist when she scored in the 81st minute off a cross pass from FY Whitney Linindoll (Paris, ME). FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) added a goal in the 89th minute, assisted by SO Anna Willis, to make the final score 4-0

Saint Joseph's College will host the Emerson College Lions in a GNAC Semi-Final game on Tuesday, 10/30. Time TBA.

10/23/07 – Monks and Cadets Play to Scoreless Tie

Standish, ME - Saint Joseph's College and Norwich University dueled to a scoreless tie in a GNAC Women’s Soccer match Tuesday. The teams seemed evenly matched as neither defense was willing to break and allow a goal.

The Monks outshot the Cadets by a tally of 20-6, but the number of near misses by both teams was nearly equal. St. Joe’s first opportunity to get on the board was in the 14th minute when FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) perfectly placed a corner kick that was headed by SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME) and missed just wide. FY Jessica Needham (E. Bridgewater, MA) was stuffed 10 yards out by Cadets GK Nicki Hunsicker on a breakaway attempt in the 45th minute. The Cadets followed with perhaps their best opportunity of the game when Meghan Hoskins took a free kick that clanked off the crossbar over SO GK Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME).

Norwich keeper Nicki Hunsicker made an amazing diving stop in the 79th minute on SO Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, ME), who placed a booming kick towards the left corner from 15 yards out, to preserve the scoreless tie.

The overtime periods were full of back and forth action and great defensive play by both teams. The first scoring chance came in the 95th minute when the Monks FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) nailed a corner kick to the front of the net but FY Anna Flynn (Scituate, MA) just missed the scoring attempt over the crossbar. It was the Cadets’ turn in the 99th minute when Meghan Hoskins attempted a free kick that was headed just wide of the net by teammate Dawn McNulty.

SO Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, ME) directed 5 shots on net in the match while teammates FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) and FY Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) had four shots apiece.

9/9/07 -  St. Joe's Rallies in 2nd to Beat UM-Farmington

FARMINGTON -- St. Joseph's College battled back to score three second-half goals and erase a halftime deficit to take a 3-1 women's soccer win over the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday at Prescott Field.

Lawrence High School graduate Katye Mayo, a sophomore at St. Joe's, returned to the field this season following ACL surgery and played a key role for the Lady Monks in goal.

"We are playing the flat back four this season for the first time and we are doing very well with it," Mayo said of the Monks, who are 3-0-0. "We have some very strong defenders who never let down after they scored."

UMF (0-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Maranacook Community School graduate Jackie Mrazik hit a high swerving free kick from 28 yards that nestled into the top left side of the net.

Playing in a constant drizzle, it appeared the lone goal would be enough as the two teams battled in the middle of the field with defenders able to keep offensive attacks under control. St. Joe's finally broke through in the 69th minute to knot the game 1-1, however. Whitney Linindoll slid a short pass to Brianna Jordan in the penalty area where she hit a ground ball past UMF netminder Melissa Demerchant for the game-tying goal.

"This was a huge win for us," St. Joe's coach Michael Bolanz said. "To battle back after being down 1-0 shows the kind of effort we gave in the second half."

Anna Willis put the Monks ahead for good eight minutes later. Willis cut the ball to the right, leaving a wide-open look at the net. She drove the ball into the lower left side for a 2-1 lead.

"This was a tough game for us to open with," UMF coach Bob Leib said. "We need to possess the ball a little bit better and we can be a very good team."

Led by the strong senior defensive leadership of Allison Walton and Jillian Leger along with sophomores Lauren Hagerman and Jennifer Crisp, the Monks were able to withstand a late surge by the Beavers.

Mayo finished the game recording just one save on four UMF shots, while Demerchant collected four saves on 10 St. Joe's shots.

Katie Jordan added an insurance goal in the final minute of the game off a pass from Leger.

SJC SO keeper Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME) had five saves while JR Mindy Morneault (Winterville, ME) had three for the Huskies in an exciting first half. The teams were not without chances in the first half as a shot by FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) just missed after hitting the left post.
