11/15/08 - Lady Monks Fall to Endicott in ECAC Semi, 1-0

BEVERLY, MA - With a goal from Megan McBride in the 33rd minute, top seeded Endicott College (17-5) defeated #4 Saint Joseph's (15-6) in an ECAC Tourney Semifinal matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Endicott came out firing in the first period and immediately tested the Saint Joseph’s keeper. The Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Year Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) blasted a shot to the lower left post, forcing Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) to make a sprawling save just five minutes into the contest to keep the game scoreless.

The Lady Monks transitioned the play the other way, and senior netminder Chelsea DeFeo (York, Maine) was equal to the challenge. DeFeo came off her line and played the angel, turning away a Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgeton, ME) shot from just five yards out with her right pad.

Endicott finally broke through with just under three minutes left in the opening half as sophomore Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.) sent a bouncing pass over three defenders sticks, allowing McBride to fire a shot into the back of the net. The Gulls would enter the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

The second half was a see-saw battle as the teams each looked to get their offense on track. The Monks would outshoot the Gulls in the final frame by a 7-1 margin but could not put a shot past Endicott’s DeFeo. The end of the period would end in exciting fashion as Saint Joseph’s Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) and Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, N.H.) put three shots on goal with :40 seconds remaining but all would be turned away by Endicott’s senior net-minder. St. Joe's would earn a penalty corner with no time remaining in the game as Kimball had another opportunity that sailed wide left, resulting in a Gulls victory.

Endicott’s DeFeo was able to make seven saves in the game while facing 11 shots in earning her tenth shutout of the season. Saint Joseph’s Meaghan Johnson had one save in the contest on five shots faced.

The loss caps a record breaking season for the Lady Monks. The 2008 squad posted 15 wins, along with a .714 winning percentage and tallied 75 goals, 65 assists and 215 points, all new program-highs.

Saint Joseph's outshot the host Gulls, 11-5 and posted a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners in the loss.

The Gulls move onto the ECAC Finals in a game to be held on Tuesday tentatively at 4:00 p.m. The Gulls will face the winner of the other ECAC Semifinal match between No. 3 seed Westfield State College and No. 2 Plymouth State in a game that will be played on Sunday.

STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's (15-5, 5-1 NAC) used two second-half goals to defeat Worcester State (11-10, 6-5 LEC) in an ECAC Tournament Quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday afternoon at Lakeside Field. Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) netted the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute for the Lady Monks.

Saint Joseph’s, the #4 seed in the seven-team tourney, will travel to Beverly, MA on Saturday to square off against top-seeded Endicott College (16-5, 8-0 TCCC), at 1:00 PM. With the loss, #5 seed Worcester State’s season comes to a close.

With the victory, the 2008 Lady Monks break the record for wins in a season with 15. The previous mark was held by the '07 squad, which posted a 14-7 record.

In a first half dominated by midfield jockeying, the Lancers notched the first scoring opportunity when Genelle Blais ‘09 (Marlboro, MA) steered a shot on net that was turned away by a Meaghan Johnson ‘12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) kick save at close range.

Fifteen minutes later, Lady Monks leading scorer Kayla Nowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME), sprung on a short breakaway by a Rague pass, just missed the left corner of the net with a quick wrist shot.

Alyssa Dunn ‘11 (Standish, ME) blasted a shot from the top of the circle with thirty seconds remaining in the first that sailed wide to cap the SJC scoring opportunities in the half.

The scoreless opening stanza yielded nine total shots – seven by the host and a pair by the visitors.

The St. Joe’s offense came to life in the second half, outshooting Worcester 15-1 with 12 of those shots finding Lancers keeper Erin MacDonald ‘09 (Dedham, MA).

Nowell notched another outstanding scoring opportunity eight minutes into the second period, only to be turned away by MacDonald, who preserved her shutout with a point blank save.

The Lady Monks finally solved the WSC keeper, who came into the contest with the ninth-best save percentage (.853) in the country, in the 53rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Sarah Bartell ‘12 (Exeter, NH) broke free on the right side from the Worcester State defenders and MacDonald, who came out of net to challenge, dove at Bartell’s feet. The freshman maintained possession and proceeded to pass to the wide-open Rague, who sent the ball into the open net to provide the home team with a one-goal advantage.

St. Joe’s continued to pepper the WSC net with shots and Nowell, who recorded seven shots on goal in the win, scored her team-high 21st goal of the year to give the Lady Monks some breathing room. After a scramble in front of MacDonald, the sophomore standout uncovered the ball and flipped it into the net from close range to extend the Royal Blue lead to 2-0 and cap the game scoring.

Overall, Saint Joseph’s outshot Worcester State 22-3 and held a 17-4 advantage in penalty corners. SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson made three saves in goal to add to her program-record total of shutouts in a season, which now stands at five. Erin MacDonald was solid in net, making 16 stops for the visitors in the loss.

11/8/08 - Lady Monks Lose NAC Championship in Overtime, 4-3

Courtney Rague '11 Julia Ostrowski '10 Jillian Kimball '10
Rague Ostrowksi Kimball

CASTLETON, VT - Saint Joseph's (14-5, 5-1 NAC) erased an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals from Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME), but ultimately fell in overtime, 4-3, to the top-seeded Castleton State Spartans (14-7, 5-1) in the league title game. Rague, Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) and Jillian Kimball '10 (Albany Township, ME) all were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Castleton State College senior forwards Carolyn Griggs and Kayla Blank each scored two goals and provided one assist to help lead the Spartans to victory over the Lady Monks, who earlier this season had defeated the Spartans 4-2 in Standish.

Blank broke free for a one-on-one opportunity with Saint Joseph’s goalie, Meaghan Johnson ‘12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) just 1:30 into the overtime period. After Johnson turned away two shots, Blank made good on the third attempt, propelling top-seed, Castleton to its first-ever NAC Championship and berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Saint Joseph's will learn early next week whether a second-consecutive ECAC Championship Tournament berth will be added to the docket.

Blank broke a scoreless tie 8:50 into the contest with her 21st goal of the season off a Griggs assist. Griggs blasted a shot that was headed wide of the goal and Blank was able to redirect it inside the nearside post, just past the sprawling Johnson. Saint Joseph’s had an opportunity to tie the score when Alyssa Dunn ‘11 (Standish, ME) was awarded a penalty stroke with 7:04 remaining in the half. Castleton goalie Trisha Clark was able to make the save high to her blocker side to preserve the one goal lead. Griggs made it 2-0 less than one minute later, as she corralled a rebound and sent home her 21st of the season.

The Lady Monks cut the lead in half just 38 seconds later as Rague scored the first of her two goals off a Kayla Nowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME) assist. Nowell played a perfect cross into the circle that Rague redirected past Clark to make it 2-1 entering intermission.

Griggs opened the Spartan scoring in the second half, one-timing her second goal of the contest inside the nearside post. Molly Fraher played the ball directly off a Kayla Blank penalty corner onto Griggs’s stick for the rare double-assist.

St. Joe’s did not go away however, rallying to score two unanswered goals and force overtime. Rague netted her second of the contest with 12:55 remaining to make it 3-2. Sarah Bartell ‘12 (Exeter, NH) passed the ball directly into the center of the circle and Rague was able to beat Clark.

Julia Ostrowski scored the Lady Monks’ equalizer with 1:12 remaining in regulation off a tremendous second effort. Clark turned away a pair of Ostrowski shots, only to see the visitors be awarded a penalty corner. After taking the penalty corner, Ostrowski repositioned and rifled a shot that Clark once again turned back. The junior forward was then able to gather the rebound and send the shot past Clark for the equalizer.

Griggs scored four goals in the NAC tourney, including the game winner versus Husson in the semifinal round, to go along with two assists to garner Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

Clark stopped 12 shots, including eight in the second half to earn the win and a spot on the All-Tournament team as Castleton improves to 14-7 overall. Johnson ended the contest with 10 saves of her own in the loss.

10/27/08 – Saint Joseph’s Field Hockey Team Set to Host NAC Quarterfinal
Lady Monks to Face Off Against Thomas College on Wednesday

North Atlantic Conference

STANDISH, ME –The St. Joe’s field hockey team, 12-4 overall and 5-1 in the squad’s first season in North Atlantic Conference play, completed the league portion of their schedule in a three-way tie for the NAC regular season championship with Castleton State and Farmington. As a result of NAC tiebreaker rules, St. Joe's received the #3 seed and will host Thomas College on Wednesday, October 27th at 3:00 PM.

The 2008 season has been a campaign filled with record-breaking performances by the Lady Monks. With the playoff games still on the docket, the team has already surpassed the single season record for points (190), goals (66) and assists (58). Head Coach Rupert Lewis broke the program record for coaching victories on October 5th when St. Joe’s defeated NAC rival Castleton State College, 4-2, to give him 27 career wins. The fourth-year skipper has 33 wins under his belt with the ‘08 playoffs looming.

The individual career and single-season record books have essentially been re-written by two standout players, Julia Ostrowski ‘10 (Albany, NY) and Kayla Nowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME), through 16 games this fall.

Ostrowski scored two goals and two assists in a 9-1 victory over Wheelock College on September 24th, giving her 64 career points to break the former mark set by Jen Marsh, who netted 58 points in two seasons (1999, 2000). The junior continues to build on the record and has 84 points prior to playoff competition. She leads the conference in assists (15) and assists per game (1.00).

Nowell, a sophomore, has shattered the single season records with 20 goals and 54 points through 16 games this fall and already owns the career mark for goals at St. Joe’s with 28 scores. Nowell broke the mark of 23 goals, also held by Marsh, with a tally against Becker College on October 21st. She leads the conference in six categories, including goals and points.

As a team, Saint Joseph’s leads the NAC in 13 statistical categories, including goals per game (3.46), goals against average (1.10) and scoring margin (2.36).

In a 5-0 victory over Salve Regina on October 11th, Nowell tallied six points to break the single-season marks for goals, assists and points. She continues to add to these totals and leads the team with 15 goals, 13 assists and 43 points through 13 games. Her 61 career points ranks second behind teammate Julia Ostrowski's '10 (Albany, NY) 71 points.

Ramapo staked an early 1-0 lead when Mackenzie Cahill '10 (Pompton Lakes, NJ) scored an unassisted goal in the 10th minute. The Roadrunners would take a 2-0 lead into the intermission after Amanda Mavrakes '10 (Wayne, NJ) scored off a penalty corner at the 23:34 mark.

The Ramapo defense did not surrender an SJC shot in the first half.

The Royal Blue offense came alive in the second half, with 10 shots, seven on net, and a pair of goals to knot the game at two apiece. Gaetani netted her 10th goal of the season, the assist going to Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME), off a penalty corner at the 51:30 mark to cut the deficit to one goal. Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) posted her 10th of the fall off another Nowell helper eight minutes later to even up the score, 2-2.

The Lady Monks, coming off a thrilling 3-2 double-OT victory over in-state rival Colby College, were unable to duplicate the heroics from earlier this week against the Roadrunners as Mavrakes scored her second marker of the game, fourth of the year, 8:17 into the extra frame to capture the victory for the home team.

Three Saint Joseph's players combined to post five defensive saves in the loss. Gaetani and Kimberly Glynn '10 (Danvers, MA) each had two and Rachel Ostrowski '12 (Albany, NY) recorded one stop.

Meg Tierney '10 (Wayne, NJ) made seven saves, all in the second stanza, for the Roadrunners and Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) recorded eight saves for the Lady Monks.

STANDISH, ME – Kayla Nowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME) scored her 15th goal of the year 39 seconds into the second overtime period to lead Saint Joseph’s (9-3, 3-1 NAC) past Colby College (4-6, 1-4 NESCAC), 3-2, for the first time in program history on Thursday afternoon. Alyssa Dunn ‘11 (Standish, ME) scored the game-tying goal, her first of the season, with 4:54 left in regulation to send the match to extra frames. Amy Campbell ‘10 (North Andover, MA) scored both of the Colby goals in the loss.

Julia Ostrowski ‘10 (Albany, NY) opened the game scoring at the 3:23 mark off of a rebound after a scramble in front of Colby keeper Liz Fontaine ‘11 (Wilbraham, MA). The unassisted goal was Ostrowski’s 10th of the year. The 1-0 lead stood going into the halftime break.

Colby got on the board just over five minutes into the second half with Campbell’s first tally to knot the match at one apiece. Meryl Poulin ‘11 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) received credit for the assist on the play.

Campbell notched her second score of the game 18 minutes later, unassisted, to provide the Mules with a 2-1 advantage with 11 minutes to play.

With much of the offensive action occurring in the SJC defensive end in the second half, it didn’t look as if the Royal Blue would be able to force extra play. But in the 66th minute, Dunn managed to get the handle on a loose ball in front and blasted a shot from 10 yards out past Fontaine to net her first goal of the ‘08 season and, eventually, send the game to extras.

As to be expected, the seven-on-seven overtime format exhausted both teams but there wasn’t a shortage of excellent scoring opportunities. Both keepers were solid in the first OT stanza, as Fontaine posted two saves and Meaghan Johnson ‘12 (Portland, ME) notched three saves for St. Joe’s to help preserve the tie and force a second overtime period.

On the Lady Monks’ first possession of the second OT period, Kerrie Boutin ‘10 (Georgetown, MA) dished a great upfield pass to Nowell, who managed to work her way around a defender and place a shot past Fontaine to lift St. Joe’s to a 3-2 win in the prolonged contest.

Kimberly Glynn ‘10 (Danvers, MA) played very well on defense as she recorded a key defensive save early in the game and snuffed out several Colby offensive drives. SJC goalkeeper Johnson made 10 saves in the victory.

Heather Quadir 11 (Medfield, MA) steered three shots on goal and Fontaine made seven saves in net in the losing effort.

The Mules outshot the Lady Monks by a 18-13 margin and also held the edge in penalty corners, 15-12.

Saint Joseph’s will travel to Mahwah, NJ on Saturday, October 18th to face off against Ramapo College at 1:00 PM while Colby will play host to NESCAC foe Connecticut College on Saturday at 11:00 AM.

10/9/08 - Huskies Chase Lady Monks, 3-1

Kayla Nowell '11
Nowell

GORHAM, ME - University of Southern Maine (7-5) defeated visiting Saint Joseph's (6-3, 2-1 NAC) 3-1 on Thursday afternoon. Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the loss.

The Lady Monks dominated the offensive end of the field but were unable to solve USM keeper Allison Hill '10 (Cape Elizabeth, ME), who made 13 saves in the victory, until the 24th minute of the second half when Nowell scooped a pass from Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) to cut the Huskies lead to 2-1 at the time.

St. Joe's held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 13-6 edge in penalty corners over Southern Maine in the losing effort.

Bethany Bougie '12 (Sanford, ME) put USM on the board 7:02 into the contest on a penalty stroke and the 1-0 lead stood for the next 42 minutes of play. Caitlin Albert '10 (Scarborough, ME) attempted a long shot that was deflected past SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus HS) by Anna Pease '09 (Gorham, ME) at the 49:34 mark to lift the home team to a 2-0 edge.

St. Joe's scored on the team's 18th shot of the game at 58:45 when Nowell placed a hard shot to the far side of the goal following a terrific individual effort and centering pass from Ostrowski to cut the USM lead to 2-1.

Nowell's goal is one away from tying Jen Marsh for the single-season mark of 12 goals, which was set in 2000. Ostrowki's assist on the play was her 8th of the year is also one shy of tying the SJC season record (held by three players: Marsh '00, '01; Monique Crawford '05, and Ostrowski '06).

In the three minutes following the Nowell goal, St. Joe's rattled off four unsuccessful penalty corners and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) steered a shot on goal that was turned away by Hill.

Whitney MacDaniel '12 (Livermore, ME) added an insurance goal with just three seconds remaining on the game clock to help lift the Huskies to the 3-1 triumph.

Kelly Emerson '09 (Vassalboro, ME) posted two shots on net and Johnson made three saves in goal for the Lady Monks. Kim Glynn '10 (Danvers, MA) made her third defensive save of the season in the loss.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:30 PM) when they travel to Little East Conference rival Keene State. St. Joseph’s College is at Salve Regina on Saturday (1:00 PM).

Rupert Lewis
Rupert Lewis

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's Head Field Hockey Coach Rupert Lewis stands alone atop the program's win list with 27 career victories after posting a key 4-2 conference triumph over Castleton State on Sunday, October 5th.

Lewis, in his fourth season at the helm, is the sixth coach in the fourteen-year history of the field hockey program. Melissa Emery Ela previously held the record and coached the Lady Monks to a 26-26 record in three seasons (1998-2000). In his first three years, Lewis saw his team improve from one victory in his first year, to six in his second and a program-best 14 last season.

A native of Jamaica and University of Southern Maine graduate ('84), Lewis guided the 2007 St. Joe's squad to a 14-7 record and the first ECAC D III Championship Tournament berth in program history. The '07 Lady Monks set six team records including wins (14), winning percentage (66.6%), consecutive wins (6), goals scored (55), assists (43), points (153) and total shutouts (3).

The 2008 club currently is 6-2 overall and 2-1 in North Atlantic Conference play, the team's first year in the league after holding NCAA D III Independent status for the last six seasons.
