- Lady Monks Fall to Endicott in ECAC Semi, 1-0
BEVERLY, MA - With a goal from Megan McBride in
the 33rd minute, top seeded Endicott College (17-5) defeated #4
Saint Joseph's (15-6) in an ECAC Tourney Semifinal matchup on
Saturday afternoon.
Endicott came out firing in the first period and immediately tested
the Saint Joseph’s keeper. The Commonwealth Coast Conference
Rookie of the Year Anna Giannoni (Granby, Conn.) blasted a shot
to the lower left post, forcing MeaghanJohnson
'12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) to make a sprawling save just five
minutes into the contest to keep the game scoreless.
The Lady Monks transitioned the play the other way, and senior
netminder Chelsea DeFeo (York, Maine) was equal to the challenge.
DeFeo came off her line and played the angel, turning away a KaylaNowell '11 (Bridgeton, ME) shot from just five
yards out with her right pad.
Endicott finally broke through with just under three minutes left
in the opening half as sophomore Lindsey Mills (Arlington, Mass.)
sent a bouncing pass over three defenders sticks, allowing McBride
to fire a shot into the back of the net. The Gulls would enter
the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second half was a see-saw battle as the teams each looked
to get their offense on track. The Monks would outshoot the Gulls
in the final frame by a 7-1 margin but could not put a shot past
Endicott’s DeFeo. The end of the period would end in exciting
fashion as Saint Joseph’s JillianKimball
'10 (Albany Township, ME) and SarahBartell
'12 (Exeter, N.H.) put three shots on goal with :40 seconds remaining
but all would be turned away by Endicott’s senior net-minder.
St. Joe's would earn a penalty corner with no time remaining in
the game as Kimball had another opportunity that
sailed wide left, resulting in a Gulls victory.
Endicott’s DeFeo was able to make seven saves in the game
while facing 11 shots in earning her tenth shutout of the season.
Saint Joseph’s MeaghanJohnson
had one save in the contest on five shots faced.
The loss caps a record breaking season for the Lady Monks. The
2008 squad posted 15 wins, along with a .714 winning percentage
and tallied 75 goals, 65 assists and 215 points, all new program-highs.
Saint Joseph's outshot the host Gulls, 11-5 and posted a 9-4 advantage
in penalty corners in the loss.
The Gulls move onto the ECAC Finals in a game to be held on Tuesday
tentatively at 4:00 p.m. The Gulls will face the winner of the
other ECAC Semifinal match between No. 3 seed Westfield State
College and No. 2 Plymouth State in a game that will be played

STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's (15-5, 5-1 NAC) used two
second-half goals to defeat Worcester State (11-10, 6-5 LEC) in
an ECAC Tournament Quarterfinal match-up on Wednesday afternoon
at Lakeside Field. CourtneyRague
'11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) netted the game-winning goal in the
53rd minute for the Lady Monks.
Saint Joseph’s, the #4 seed in the seven-team tourney, will
travel to Beverly, MA on Saturday to square off against top-seeded
Endicott College (16-5, 8-0 TCCC), at 1:00 PM. With the loss,
#5 seed Worcester State’s season comes to a close.
With the victory, the 2008 Lady Monks break the record for wins
in a season with 15. The previous mark was held by the '07 squad,
which posted a 14-7 record.
In a first half dominated by midfield jockeying, the Lancers notched
the first scoring opportunity when Genelle Blais ‘09 (Marlboro,
MA) steered a shot on net that was turned away by a MeaghanJohnson ‘12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) kick
save at close range.
Fifteen minutes later, Lady Monks leading scorer KaylaNowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME), sprung on a
short breakaway by a Rague pass, just missed
the left corner of the net with a quick wrist shot.
AlyssaDunn ‘11 (Standish,
ME) blasted a shot from the top of the circle with thirty seconds
remaining in the first that sailed wide to cap the SJC scoring
opportunities in the half.
The scoreless opening stanza yielded nine total shots –
seven by the host and a pair by the visitors.
The St. Joe’s offense came to life in the second half, outshooting
Worcester 15-1 with 12 of those shots finding Lancers keeper Erin
MacDonald ‘09 (Dedham, MA).
Nowell notched another outstanding scoring opportunity
eight minutes into the second period, only to be turned away by
MacDonald, who preserved her shutout with a point blank save.
The Lady Monks finally solved the WSC keeper, who came into the
contest with the ninth-best save percentage (.853) in the country,
in the 53rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. SarahBartell ‘12 (Exeter, NH) broke free on
the right side from the Worcester State defenders and MacDonald,
who came out of net to challenge, dove at Bartell’s
feet. The freshman maintained possession and proceeded to pass
to the wide-open Rague, who sent the ball into
the open net to provide the home team with a one-goal advantage.
St. Joe’s continued to pepper the WSC net with shots and
Nowell, who recorded seven shots on goal in the
win, scored her team-high 21st goal of the year to give the Lady
Monks some breathing room. After a scramble in front of MacDonald,
the sophomore standout uncovered the ball and flipped it into
the net from close range to extend the Royal Blue lead to 2-0
and cap the game scoring.
Overall, Saint Joseph’s outshot Worcester State 22-3 and
held a 17-4 advantage in penalty corners. SJC keeper MeaghanJohnson made three saves in goal to add to her
program-record total of shutouts in a season, which now stands
at five. Erin MacDonald was solid in net, making 16 stops for
the visitors in the loss.

CASTLETON, VT - Saint Joseph's (14-5, 5-1 NAC) erased
an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals from CourtneyRague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME), but ultimately
fell in overtime, 4-3, to the top-seeded Castleton State Spartans
(14-7, 5-1) in the league title game. Rague,
JuliaOstrowski '10 (Albany,
NY) and JillianKimball '10
(Albany Township, ME) all were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Castleton State College senior forwards Carolyn Griggs and Kayla
Blank each scored two goals and provided one assist to help lead
the Spartans to victory over the Lady Monks, who earlier this
season had defeated the Spartans 4-2 in Standish.
Blank broke free for a one-on-one opportunity with Saint Joseph’s
goalie, MeaghanJohnson ‘12
(Portland, ME/Cheverus) just 1:30 into the overtime period. After
Johnson turned away two shots, Blank made good
on the third attempt, propelling top-seed, Castleton to its first-ever
NAC Championship and berth in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Saint Joseph's will learn early next week whether a second-consecutive
ECAC Championship Tournament berth will be added to the docket.
Blank broke a scoreless tie 8:50 into the contest with her 21st
goal of the season off a Griggs assist. Griggs blasted a shot
that was headed wide of the goal and Blank was able to redirect
it inside the nearside post, just past the sprawling Johnson.
Saint Joseph’s had an opportunity to tie the score when
AlyssaDunn ‘11 (Standish,
ME) was awarded a penalty stroke with 7:04 remaining in the half.
Castleton goalie Trisha Clark was able to make the save high to
her blocker side to preserve the one goal lead. Griggs made it
2-0 less than one minute later, as she corralled a rebound and
sent home her 21st of the season.
The Lady Monks cut the lead in half just 38 seconds later as Rague
scored the first of her two goals off a KaylaNowell ‘11 (Bridgton, ME) assist. Nowell
played a perfect cross into the circle that Rague
redirected past Clark to make it 2-1 entering intermission.
Griggs opened the Spartan scoring in the second half, one-timing
her second goal of the contest inside the nearside post. Molly
Fraher played the ball directly off a Kayla Blank penalty corner
onto Griggs’s stick for the rare double-assist.
St. Joe’s did not go away however, rallying to score two
unanswered goals and force overtime. Raguenetted
her second of the contest with 12:55 remaining to make it 3-2.
SarahBartell ‘12 (Exeter,
NH) passed the ball directly into the center of the circle and
Rague was able to beat Clark.
JuliaOstrowski scored the Lady
Monks’ equalizer with 1:12 remaining in regulation off a
tremendous second effort. Clark turned away a pair of Ostrowski
shots, only to see the visitors be awarded a penalty corner. After
taking the penalty corner, Ostrowski repositioned
and rifled a shot that Clark once again turned back. The junior
forward was then able to gather the rebound and send the shot
past Clark for the equalizer.
Griggs scored four goals in the NAC tourney, including the game
winner versus Husson in the semifinal round, to go along with
two assists to garner Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Clark stopped 12 shots, including eight in the second half to
earn the win and a spot on the All-Tournament team as Castleton
improves to 14-7 overall. Johnson ended the contest
with 10 saves of her own in the loss.

two defensive saves in the losing effort.

half.
The Royal Blue offense came alive in the second half, with 10
shots, seven on net, and a pair of goals to knot the game at two
apiece. Gaetani netted her 10th goal of the season,

helper eight minutes later to even up the score, 2-2.
The Lady Monks, coming off a thrilling 3-2 double-OT victory over
in-state rival Colby College, were unable to duplicate the heroics
from earlier this week against the Roadrunners as Mavrakes scored
her second marker of the game, fourth of the year, 8:17 into the
extra frame to capture the victory for the home team.

STANDISH, ME – KaylaNowell
‘11 (Bridgton, ME) scored her 15th goal of the year 39 seconds
into the second overtime period to lead Saint Joseph’s (9-3,
3-1 NAC) past Colby College (4-6, 1-4 NESCAC), 3-2, for the first
time in program history on Thursday afternoon. AlyssaDunn ‘11 (Standish, ME) scored the game-tying
goal, her first of the season, with 4:54 left in regulation to
send the match to extra frames. Amy Campbell ‘10 (North
Andover, MA) scored both of the Colby goals in the loss.
JuliaOstrowski ‘10 (Albany,
NY) opened the game scoring at the 3:23 mark off of a rebound
after a scramble in front of Colby keeper Liz Fontaine ‘11
(Wilbraham, MA). The unassisted goal was Ostrowski’s 10th
of the year. The 1-0 lead stood going into the halftime break.
Colby got on the board just over five minutes into the second
half with Campbell’s first tally to knot the match at one
apiece. Meryl Poulin ‘11 (Cape Elizabeth, ME) received credit
for the assist on the play.
Campbell notched her second score of the game 18 minutes later,
unassisted, to provide the Mules with a 2-1 advantage with 11
minutes to play.
With much of the offensive action occurring in the SJC defensive
end in the second half, it didn’t look as if the Royal Blue
would be able to force extra play. But in the 66th minute, Dunn
managed to get the handle on a loose ball in front and blasted
a shot from 10 yards out past Fontaine to net her first goal of
the ‘08 season and, eventually, send the game to extras.
As to be expected, the seven-on-seven overtime format exhausted
both teams but there wasn’t a shortage of excellent scoring
opportunities. Both keepers were solid in the first OT stanza,
as Fontaine posted two saves and MeaghanJohnson
‘12 (Portland, ME) notched three saves for St. Joe’s
to help preserve the tie and force a second overtime period.
On the Lady Monks’ first possession of the second OT period,
KerrieBoutin ‘10 (Georgetown,
MA) dished a great upfield pass to Nowell, who
managed to work her way around a defender and place a shot past
Fontaine to lift St. Joe’s to a 3-2 win in the prolonged
contest.
KimberlyGlynn ‘10 (Danvers,
MA) played very well on defense as she recorded a key defensive
save early in the game and snuffed out several Colby offensive
drives. SJC goalkeeper Johnson made 10 saves
in the victory.
Heather Quadir 11 (Medfield, MA) steered three shots on goal and
Fontaine made seven saves in net in the losing effort.
The Mules outshot the Lady Monks by a 18-13 margin and also held
the edge in penalty corners, 15-12.
Saint Joseph’s will travel to Mahwah, NJ on Saturday, October
18th to face off against Ramapo College at 1:00 PM while Colby
will play host to NESCAC foe Connecticut College on Saturday at
11:00 AM.
