BOSTON, MA - Host team Emerson College defeated Saint Joseph's, 72-55,
in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the SJC are 13-6 overall and 6-2 in GNAC play. The
Lions improve to 6-2 in GNAC competition and 11-9 overall on the season.
Emerson’s Maude Okrah (Jr., Rutland, Mass.) took the opening
tip in for a layup with only four seconds gone in the game and the
Lions never relinquished the lead. The victory moves Emerson into
a third place tie with St. Joe’s.
Emerson’s first half lead stretched to 10 points following a
three-point shot by Okrah. A Carolyn Freeman (So.,
Scarborough, Maine) jumper brought the Monks to within 29-26, but
a Kathy Andrade (FY, Hull, Mass.) layup followed by a Tamara Kearny
(FY, Everett, Mass.) three-pointer gave Emerson a 34-26 lead with
2:29 remaining.
St. Joe’s was able to pull to within 38-35 on a layup by Meghan
Daigle (So., Grantham, N.H.) with 16:23 remaining in the
game. Andrade answered with two free throws, and an Andrea Kosek (So.,
Latham, N.Y.) trifecta bumped the lead back to eight. Megan
Farrell (Sr., Abington, Mass.) drilled two free throws at
the 10:42 mark to pull the Monks to within six points, but Emerson
went on an 11-0 run to put the game away.
Andrade led all scorers with 25 points and had 13 rebounds. Okrah
had 13 and Lauren Vassallo (Jr., Oxford, Conn.) 10 for Emerson.
Daigle and Allison Miner (So., Pembroke,
NH) each had 10 points for St. Joe's. Alysn Ludwig
(Jr., Waldoboro, ME) added 8 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.
Emerson’s next game is at home against Suffolk University on
Wednesday, February 6 at 7:00pm. The Monks host Pine Manor College
Wednesday at 5:50pm.
