STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference
has announced their weekly honorees for the March 2nd-March 8th reporting
period and the Saint Joseph's softball team has taken home all three
awards. Lady Monks sophomore shortstop Liddy van der Linden
(Worcester, MA) has been named the GNAC Softball Player of
the Week, freshman Alyssa Dunn (Standish,
ME) is the GNAC Softball Rookie of the Week and freshman hurler Kiera
Walsh (Benton, ME) has been tabbed as the GNAC Softball Pitcher of
the Week.
van der Linden hit .323 (10-31) with two home runs
and 11 RBI's during a 10-game stint in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic
in Fort Myers, FL last week. The sophomore shortstop was 2-4 with
a grand slam home run in a 13-9 win over RPI on March 8th and 2-4
with a solo home run in the team's season opener against Clark University
March 3rd.
Dunn hit .412 (14-34) with 3 doubles and 6 RBI's
during the Lady Monks' week in Fort Myers, FL. The freshman 1B/DH
went 3-4 at the plate against WPI on March 4th and 2-3 with 2 runs,
2 RBI's and a double in a 10-2 win over Dominican University on March
7th.
Walsh earned three of Saint Joseph's five wins during
the team's spring trip. The freshman pitched a complete game with
6 strikeouts, 2 earned runs and no walks in a win over Rockford College
on March 3rd and allowed no earned runs and 4 hits while striking
out 3 in five innings of work against Dominican University on March
7th. Walsh holds a 3-3 record and a 3.03 earned run average with 20
strikeouts and 7 walks in 37 innings on the mound.
The St. Joe's softball team opened the season 1-5, but rattled off
four straight victories to finish their southern swing with a 5-5
record. Three of the team's five losses came in extra innings. The
Lady Monks will play at Albertus Magnus College (CT) in a GNAC doubleheader
on March 22nd at 4:00 PM.
