SALISBURY, MD - The St. Joe's baseball team suffered their first sweep
of the young season at the hands of nationally ranked Salisbury University
on Saturday, 3-1 and 9-0. Monks' game one starter SO Pat Moran
(Winterport, ME) tossed a gem, allowing 4 hits and no walks while
striking out 6 in the loss. Senior shortstop Luke
Enman (Milan, NH) was 2-2 in the second game with
a double.
All of the scoring in the first game occurred in the first inning.
Monks leadoff hitter JR Wade Oliver
(Owls Head, ME) opened the game with an impressive plate appearance
that resulted in a two-strike single to right field. St. Joe’s
used a SR Brian Schools (Gorham,
ME) sacrifice bunt and a Luke Enman groundball to second base to push
Oliver to third base. SO Ben Grant-Roy
(Biddeford, ME) gave the Monks a 1-0 lead when he singled to right
to send Oliver home and record his 10th RBI of the
season.
The Sea Gulls scored 3 runs off of 3 hits in the bottom of the first
with all three scores coming from a home run off the bat of senior
cleanup hitter Justin Armiger on a two-strike count. The three runs
would prove to be one more than Salisbury would need to take the win
as the Monks were unable to mount a scoring threat for the remainder
of the contest. The teams combined for one hit in the remaining 6
innings of play and the game was completed in just over an hour.
Monks starter Pat Moran and Salisbury
starter Jeff Feigl combined to allow no walks and only 6 hits in the
fast paced pitcher’s duel.
Salisbury used the long ball in the early going to ignite their offense
in the second game as Armiger and leftfielder Mark Bostwick hit back-to-back
home runs in the first. Armiger’s blast was a three-run shot
and the Sea Gulls held a 4-0 lead after the opening inning.
Armiger would strike again in the 5th inning with a two-run shot to
help his team stake a 9-0 lead.
Sea Gulls starter Dustin Herbert did not allow a hit until the fourth
inning when Luke Enman singled to
break up the no-hitter bid. Enman doubled in the
sixth inning to account for both of the SJC base hits in the loss.
SO starting pitcher Andrew Keirstead
(Westbrook, ME) takes the loss for the Monks and threw 4 1/3 innings
while allowing 8 hits and 8 runs. FY Chris Dion
(Lawrence, MA) allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning in relief and SO
Chris Nanof (Clinton, MA) threw
a perfect sixth inning for St. Joe’s.
With the doubleheader sweep, #14 Salisbury has won 16 consecutive
games, a new school record. The Sea Gulls (16-1) are also 12-0 at
home. Justin Armiger was 4-4 on the day with 3 home runs and 8 RBI’s.
The Monks are set to kick off their conference schedule next Saturday,
3/29 with a doubleheader at Suffolk University. The first pitch is
scheduled for 12:00 PM. St. Joe’s will host a doubleheader against
GNAC foe Johnson and Wales University on Sunday, 3/30 at 12:00 PM.
