six in five scoreless innings of work to improve his season record
to 2-1 and freshman Ian Lee (Hampden,
ME) was 2-4 with a home run and 4 RBI’s to help the Monks clinch
an 8-0 victory. St. Joe’s led 5-4 going into the seventh inning
but Thomas scored 3 runs in the top of the inning and the Monks were
unable to produce a late rally and lost, 7-5. Freshman outfielder
Eric LaBatte (Rochester, NH) was
3-4 with a run and an RBI for the Monks in the loss.
Ian Lee hit his second home run
of the season in the second inning, a two-run blast, and SR Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) singled home SR Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME) in the third to give the Monks
a 3-0 lead and more than enough run support for SJC starter Kyle
Dorr.
The Monks put five runs on the board off of three hits in the 6th
inning. A JR Wade Oliver (Owls Head,
ME) sac fly, and a SO Ben Grant-Roy
(Biddeford, ME) single accounted for two of the runs and Ian
Lee knocked home two with a single in the inning.
Eric LaBatte was hit by a pitch
with the bases loaded to record an RBI in the big inning that saw
the Monks take an 8-0 lead, one they would not relinquish.
For the Monks, Brian Schools scored
2 runs and SO Ricky Sarmento (Lowell,
MA) hit a triple. JR Andrew Pooler
(Somesville, ME) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to record
his first save of the season.
Thomas scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Ben
Grant-Roy hit a double to send home Eric
LaBatte to tie the game at one apiece in the bottom
of the inning.
LaBatte doubled home SR Andrew Wood
(South Portland, ME), who led off with a single, to give the Monks
a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Terriers tied the game in the fourth inning when Cory Estes (Old
Town, ME) singled to send home Nicholas Cloutier (Topsham, ME).
Dustin Spiller led off in the bottom
of the fourth and tripled to deep right-center and SO Pat
Moran (Winterport, ME) followed with a sac fly to
left to give the Monks a 3-2 lead.
Thomas regained the lead with two runs in the top of the 6th. Scott
Geel (Calais, ME) and Michael Busa (Carver, MA) registered RBI’s
in the inning to give the Terriers a 4-3 lead.
SO Nick Johnson (Yuma, AZ) pinch
hit in the bottom of the sixth and came through in the clutch with
an RBI single that sent home Wade Oliver
to tie the game. Pinch runner JR Stephan Gorsun
(South Berwick, ME) scored on a passed ball to put the Monks up, 5-4.
The Terriers wasted no time in the top of the seventh as they hit
three consecutive singles off SJC pitcher Brian Schools
to load the bases. Schools struck out the next two batters, but Josh
Nickerson (Stockton Springs, ME) had an extended at-bat that resulted
in a walk to send home the tying run. Geel walked and Busa was hit
by a pitch to put the Terriers up 7-5 before Schools
struck out Jared Fieldsend (Somersworth, NH) to end the inning. The
Monks were unable to mount an offensive threat in the bottom of the
inning.
For the Terriers, Estes, Cloutier and Fieldsend all tallied two hits
in the game and Kyle Kendall (Fairhaven, MA) recorded the win in relief.
St. Joe’s will take on in-state rival Southern Maine on Thursday,
April 17, 2008 in a nine inning game that is scheduled to begin at
