OpenerSTANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph’s College defeated Bowdoin
College twice, 12-3 and 10-0, in the team's home opening doubleheader
on Tuesday afternoon. Monks game one starting pitcher SO Andrew
Keirstead (Westbrook, ME) delivered an outstanding
performance to earn his third win of the season. Game two starter
SO Kyle Dorr (Berwick, ME) was equally
dominant in the nightcap to pick up his first win of the season. SO
Ben Grant-Roy (Biddeford, ME) continued
to swing a hot bat and tallied 4 hits and 4 RBI’s in the twinbill
to pace the Monks offensively.
In game one, SR Brian Schools (Gorham,
ME) and SR Luke Enman (Milan, NH)
both scored in the first inning to give the Monks an early 2-0 lead.
Schools singled and was tripled home by Enman,
who scored on an errant throw by the Bowdoin right fielder.
In the bottom of the second inning, SO Pat Moran
(Winterport, ME) hit a deep home run over the left field fence, a
solo shot, to extend the SJC lead to 3-0.
The Polar Bears put two runs on the board to narrow the Monks’
advantage to 3-2. FY Matt Ruane (Belmont, MA) and FY Adam Marquit
(New York, NY) scored the Bowdoin runs in the inning off of a FY Brendan
Garner (Swampscott, MA) groundout and a SO Reid Auger (Billerica,
MA) single, respectively.
The 3-2 score would prove to be the closest the Polar Bears would
get to the lead in the game as the Monks scored four runs in both
the 3rd and 4th innings to take a healthy 11-2 lead. SR Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) collected 4 RBI’s off
of two singles in the eight-run offensive surge that spanned two innings
and Ben Grant-Roy knocked in 2 runs
with a single in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Pat Moran
singled and was replaced by pinch runner JR Steve
Gorsun (South Berwick, ME), who swiped second base
and scored on a FY Todd Keneborus
(Hollis Center, ME) single to make the score 12-3.
Brendan Garner scored on a JR Joe Berte (Marlborough, MA) sac fly
in the fifth inning to account for the third Bowdoin run.
For the Monks, Brian Schools was
2-4 with 2 runs and a stolen base, Pat Moran
was 2-3 with the solo long ball and Dustin Spiller
went 2-3 with 4 RBI’s. JR Wade Oliver
(Owls Head, ME) scored 2 runs in the lopsided victory. The crafty
southpaw Keirstead scattered 6 hits while striking
out 3 and allowing no walks and 2 earned runs to pick up the win and
FY Kevin Chamberlain (Scarborough,
ME) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
Starting pitcher SO Joe Pace (Newburyport, MA) takes the loss for
the Polar Bears. Catcher Reid Auger was 2-3 with an RBI and third
baseman Matt Ruane was 2-3 with a run in the setback.
In
game two, Wade Oliver led off the
Monks half of the first inning with a single and scored on a two-out
single by Ben Grant-Roy to give
St. Joe’s a 1-0 lead.
Starter Kyle Dorr sailed through
the first four innings of the game, allowing only two Bowdoin runners
while striking out two and inducing seven groundball outs.
Pat Moran offered Dorr
some breathing room when he doubled home Grant-Roy
and Dustin Spiller in the 4th inning
to extend the SJC lead to 3-0.
The St. Joe’s offense added three more runs in the 5th to mount
a 6-0 advantage. After a Brian Schools
fly out to left, Luke Enman walked
and stole second base. Grant-Roy was awarded first
base after being plunked by a pitch and Spiller followed
with a double that plated Enman and sent Grant-Roy
to third. Grant-Roy crossed the plate on a wild pitch
and Spiller was sent home by an FY Ian
Lee (Hampden, ME) single to cap the scoring in the
inning.
St. Joe’s managed to add four more runs in the bottom of the
sixth to complete the game scoring and provide the Royal Blue with
a 10-0 victory. Ben Grant-Roy and Ian
Lee both registered RBI singles in the inning and
FY Eric LaBatte (Rochester, NH)
notched an RBI double.
Ben Grant-Roy was 3-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI’s,
Ian Lee went 2-4 with 2 RBI’s and Pat
Moran was 2-3 with 2 RBI’s. Luke
Enman scored 2 runs and swiped 2 bases in the victory.
Kyle Dorr and Brian
Schools, who threw 1 2/3 innings in relief, combined
to hold the Polar Bear batters to just three hits in the game.
Bowdoin starter SO Steve Hall (Bath, ME) struck out 6 batters in 4
1/3 innings and was hit with the loss. Polar Bears catcher Reid Auger
was 2-3 in the losing effort.
St Joe’s will host Colby College on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:00
PM in a nine inning contest.
