2005 SEASON IN REVIEW

The field hockey team started the season with lots of hope and promise from a young team comprised of four juniors, five sophomores and twelve freshmen.

The season opened with a nail-biting game against the University of New England in which the Monks lost a close one by the score 2-1. The highly-spirited, but hard working young team struggled to find their team chemistry and achieve that elusive victory. Team spirit and game energy remained high throughout the season, despite ending a 1-13 season record for the Monks.

The young Monks showed they had the tenacity to learn and improve as their first win was finally achieved at the final game of the season. They demonstrated their mental toughness and growth in many highly contested games against more established and formidable opponents.

First year coach Rupert Lewis felt his young team could compete with the best on any given day as long as they showed up to play and compete as one. The win against Wheelock College (Mass.) indicated that the team finally understood what it takes to win games.

The Monks will lose 2 players, but Coach Lewis feels the program has a bright future. With the push on recruitment and improving the current players, the Monks are determined to show great improvement during the 2006 season.

The Monks earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-13 overall. Wheelock College wrapped up their season with a record of 0-14 overall.

Ward’s game-winner came just under 5 minutes into the second half after Wheelock freshman forward Jill Chaffee (Bridgewater, ME) tied the game with her fourth goal of the year with 7 minutes left in the first half.

Earlier, St. Joseph’s junior midfielder Monique Crawford (Peru, ME) opened the scoring to give St. Joseph’s the 1-0 lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Murray (South Attleboro, MA) stopped nine shots for the home Wildcats in the loss while Ellen Gagne (Stoneham, MA) saved one shot to pick up the win for the Monks.

Sophomore goalie Kelly Bocchino (Vassalboro, ME) had 5 saves against 6 shots. 2005 Season Preview

To say the field hockey team is young this season would be an understatement. After going through a rebuilding year with just one senior on the '04 roster and a first-year goalie, the team finds itself with no seniors and another first-year goalie this season.

The roster is comprised of four juniors, five sophomores and twelve freshmen, due largely to the recruiting efforts of former Coach Jennell Carter.

Coach Rupert Lewis (1st year) will look to his tri-captains to take charge of the squad. Sophomore forward Monique Crawford (Peru, ME) had seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) while sophomore midfielder Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) led the team in shots (31) last season. Junior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) will key the defense.

Junior Sarah Kay (Lewiston, ME), second on the team with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists) last season, returns to the front line.

Three first-year students who should challenge for starting roles are forward Kelly Emerson (Vassalboro, ME), defense Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) and midfielder Amanda MacPheters (Dover-Foxcroft, ME).

First-year goalkeeper Ellen Gagne (Northborough, MA) shows lots of potential and has made great strides adjusting to the college game.
