JOE'S FIELD HOCKEY '06 ARCHIVE 3/7/07 - Monks Earn Recognition from NFHCA
The Saint Joseph's College field hockey squad was recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for achievement in the classroom. The 2006 squad holds a team GPA of 3.06 for the fall semester. The following players were named to the 2006 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad: Jessica Baker, Kerrie Boutin, Claire Cook, Kelly Emerson, Jillian Kimball, Amanda Macpheters, Julia Ostrowski, Karrie Sirois, Lauren Snow, and Allison Zellers. 10/27/06 - Field Hockey Ends Season with Loss
at Keene
Keene, NH - Keene State, ranked 4th in NCAA DIII New England West, defeated St. Joe’s 6-0 on Friday night. Six players scored goals as the Owls improved to 14-4 overall and the Monks fell to 6-10. Amanda Wirzbicki (Gardner, MA), Steph Georgevits (Concord, NH), and Jess Mirisola (Tewksbury, MA) scored first half goals for the Owls. Mirisola’s goal came on a penalty stroke with no time remaining. Alyssa Rowell (Queensbury, NY), Kat Trimmer (Worcester, MA), and Liz Rand (Peterborough, NH) added second half goals. Rand’s goal was her first intercollegiate goal. Sara Joyce (Hampstead, NH) and Jennifer McDoughall (Avon, CT) combined on the shutout for the Owls. 3-0 Setback
Standish, ME – The Saint Joseph's College field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to Colby College today. The loss puts the Monks at 6-9 and Colby stands at 4-9 overall. The home crowd cheered on Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA), the lone senior on the squad, in her final home match of the season and also said goodbye to sophomore Amanda MacPheters (Dover-Foxcroft, ME), who will attend pharmacy school next year. Colby wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, recording a goal just 5:39 into the contest as sophomore Frazer Humes (Littleton, CO) netted an unassisted goal for a 1-0 lead. The White Mules tallied their second goal a short time later as junior Jennifer Reilly (York Harbor, ME) beat keeper first-year Ashley Tessier (Enfield, NH) off a pass from sophomore Chelsea Rosenheimer (Nashotah, WI) at 6:40. The Mules held a 2-0 lead at the half and out-shot St. Joe’s 10-2. The Mules continued to apply pressure in the second half, holding an advantage in shots (12-4) and penalty corners (4-0). Colby made it 3-0 as Reilly found first year Ashley Wagner (Sudbury, MA) for the final goal of the game at 55:12. The Monks were led by first-years Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) and Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME). Tessier finished with 6 saves in 35 minutes and first-year Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) took over in the second half for the Monks, also making 6 saves. Junior Jamie Enos (South Hamilton, MA) had three saves in the win for the Mules. St. Joe’s concludes the regular season at 6 PM on Friday, October 27 at Keene State College in New Hampshire. 10/22/06 - Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Win over Anna Maria Standish, ME - First-year Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) scored two goals to lead the Monks to a 3-2 win over Anna Maria. St. Joe’s improves to 6-8 while Anna Maria drops to 3-13 overall. Sophomore Kelly Emerson (Vassalboro, ME) put St. Joe’s up 1-0 after netting a pass from sophomore Gina Gaetani (Auburn, ME) in the 30th minute. This would be the only goal of the half, but the Monks out-shot Anna Maria 12-2 and held an 8-2 advantage in first half penalty corners. Ostrowski put the Monks up 2-0 after finishing a pass from junior Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) at 49:40 and extended the lead with another goal at 57:03 off a pass from first year Jessica Baker (Scarborough, ME). The Amcats did not go quietly, despite being down 3-0 with less than thirteen minutes to play. Junior Jodi Dube (Gardner, MA) scored off a pass from junior Alicia Gray (Norwich, VT) to make it 3-1 at 66:47. With just over two minutes to play, senior Nicole Eldredge (W. Barnstable, MA) scored an unassisted goal. The Monks fought off the Amcat comeback and earned their sixth win of the season. First year Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had two saves for St. Joe’s and senior Rachel Braier (Saugus, MA) had seven for Anna Maria. The Monks host Colby on Wednesday, October 25th at 3 PM for their final home game of the season. 10/20/06 - Monks Suffer OT Loss to Husson Standish, ME - First-year Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) scored and assisted on another goal, but the Monks dropped a 3-2 decision to Husson College in overtime today. Senior KaroleAnne Emery (Parkman, ME) scored the game winner at 78:52 and assisted on the other two Eagle goals. The Monks struck first as first-year Jessica Baker (Scarborough, ME) netted a pass from Ostrowski at 11:11. Husson evened things with a goal by junior Shawna Bell (Corinth, ME) at 14:00. The teams went into the break deadlocked at 1-1 with St. Joe’s holding an 8-4 advantage in shots. First year Elisha Dorso (Farmingdale, ME) gave the Eagles a 2-1 edge with a goal at 50:24 but Ostrowski made it 2-2, scoring off an assist by first-year Kerrie Boutin (Georgetown, MA) at 62:53. The game remained tied for final few minutes and the squads were faced with fifteen minutes of sudden death overtime. Emery scored the winning shot at 78:52. Junior Kelly Bocchino (Vassalboro, ME) recorded 11 saves for the Eagles and first year Ashley Tessier (Enfield, NH) had 8 for St. Joe’s. Leads Field Hockey Past Becker
Leicester, MA – Junior Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) tallied her first career hat trick as St. Joe’s (5-7) shut-out Becker College 4-0. First year Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) added a goal and two assists for the Monks. Becker drops to 2-12 on the season. St. Joe’s dominated the game, out-shooting the Hawks 17-4 and holding a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners. Ward put the Monks up 2-0 after knocking in a cross from Ostrowski at 8:00 and tipping in a shot by Ostrowski at 11:51. Less than two minutes into the second half, Ward scored her third goal off a penalty corner pass from first-year Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME). After a scramble in front of the net, Ostrowski collected a ball from first-year Kerrie Boutin (Georgetown, MA) and scored the final goal of the game. First-year Ashley Tessier (Enfield, NH) picked up the win for St. Joe’s. The team hosts Husson College on Friday, October 20th at 3:00 p.m. 10/16/06 - Field Hockey Players

Junior Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) is currently ranked fourth in the nation in penalty strokes. Ward has connected on 3 of 4 strokes this season. Ward is also 15th in goals per game with 12 goals in 12 games. 2-1 Win at Lasell
Ostrowski Picks up Fifth Assist Newton, MA – First-year Julia Ostrowski (Albany, NY) picked up her fifth assist of the season, setting up sophomore Gina Gaetani (Auburn, ME) for the game winner as the Monks defeated Lasell 2-1. St. Joe’s improves to 4-6 on the season. St. Joe’s got on board early as a break away with Ostrowski led to a penalty stroke by junior Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) at 5:47. This marks Ward’s ninth goal of the season and she is 3-for-3 on penalty strokes. The Monks extended the lead to 2-0 with Gaetani’s goal just a minute and a half into the second half. The Lasers responded with a goal by Caitlyn Walker at 52:58, but St. Joe’s dominated the game with speed and quickness and secured the win. First-year Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had three saves for St. Joe’s. The team travels to Maine-Farmington on Saturday, October 14, for a 12:00 p.m. game. 10/5/06 - Field Hockey Suffers
Loss at USM
Gorham, ME - Sophomore Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, ME) scored the game winning goal at 55:05 giving Southern Maine a slim 1-0 win over visiting St. Joe's. The Monks are 3-6 and the Huskies improve to 6-6. USM held a slight advantage in shots (12-9) in a very evenly-played game. Albert collected her own rebound off a deflected shot and scored the unassisted goal from the top right of the circle. First-year Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had three saves in the loss and FY Allie Hill (Cape Elizabeth, ME) had five for the Huskies. The Monks were led by senior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) with many solid drives. First-years Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME) and Amanda MacPheters (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) also turned in great performances for St. Joe's. Posts 3-2 Come-From-Behind Victory Over Anna Maria - Ward Nets 7th Goal
of the Season
Paxton, MA – Junior Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME) scored two goals to lift the Monks (2-4) to a 3-2 victory over Anna Maria College (2-6). Anna Maria jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Lauren Hachey at 11:13 and Alicia Gray followed with her second goal of the year to give the Amcats a 2-0 lead going into half-time. The Monks came alive after the break, out-shooting Anna Maria 17-2 and holding a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Ward put St. Joe’s on the board with a goal at 41:10 to make it 2-1. First year Julie Ostrowski (Albany, NY) recorded her first intercollegiate goal to tie the game at 43:33. In dramatic fashion, first-year goal keeper Ashley Tessier (Enfield, NH) stopped a penalty stroke to keep St. Joe’s alive. Several minutes later Ward scored the game winner on penalty stroke. Tessier finished with two saves and Rachel Braier had 10 saves in the loss. St. Joe’s plays back-to-back home games this weekend against Boston rivals Wheelock College on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 2:30 PM, and Regis College on Sunday, October 1, at 12 noon. 9/23/06 - Castleton Defeats

Castleton, VT - In a very evenly-played first half, both teams squandered chances on the wet field, and played 35 minutes of scoreless field hockey. The Spartans fired off five first-half shots, but Saint Joseph’s Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME/Georges Valley) was equal to the task, stopping the four that came her way. For the game Sirois stopped 10 shots on goal. The Monks opened the second half with plenty of energy as they were able to slip a goal in seven minutes into the second half. Darcey Ward (Dresden, ME/Hall-Dale) put home her fifth goal of the season off a perfectly crossed ball from Julie Ostrowski (Albany, NY/Guilderland Central). The Spartans seemed to take some control at this point, and with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game, Heather Brock (Bow, NH/Bow) put home the equalizer for Castleton after Sirois had thwarted several attempts. Just one minute and five second later, Brock hit a cross after a reset on the sideline that Carolyn Griggs (Lincoln, VT/Mt. Abraham Union) blasted home for the game winner. The Monks refused to give up, with a late game flurry that was turned away very nicely by Castleton goal keeper Trisha Clark (East Dover, VT/Brattleboro Union). Clark stopped six shots on the day. With the win, Castleton improves to 3-4, and the Monks fall to 1-4. Saint Joseph's returns to action on Wednesday, September 27, when they travel to Anna Maria College for a 4 PM game. 9/16/06 - Monks Rally Past Simmons in Double Overtime Boston, MA – First-year Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME) scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to lead the Saint Joseph's College field hockey team to their first win of the season, a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Simmons College. Simmons struck first as Kristen Perkins scored off a deflection at 26:36. Junior Darcy Ward (Dresden, ME) evened the score at 33:43 off a pass from senior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) and gave the Monks a 2-1 lead after netting a penalty stroke in the 65th minute. The Sharks knotted the score with less than 30 seconds to play in regulation on a shot from the top of the circle by Elizabeth Hennigan and carried the momentum into the first over time period out-shooting the Monks 5-1. First-year goalkeeper Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) forced a second overtime period after making two key saves in the period and finished with 6 saves. Kimball drilled her game-winner off a centering pass from first year Julie Ostrowski Albany, NY) to help the Monks improve to 1-3 on the season while the Sharks drop to 0-5. Comes up Short in 3-2 Loss at Husson
Bangor, ME – The Monks came out strong last night at Husson, but an unanswered goal by Shawna Bell (Corinth, ME) just 10 minutes into the game would make the difference as the Eagles took a 3-2 victory. KaroleAnne Emery (Parkman, ME) put back the rebound of a shot by Erin Brown (Belfast, ME) at 44:35 to make it 2-0. St. Joe’s cut the lead as junior Darcy Ward (Dresden, ME) netted a pass from junior Michelle Cusack (Portland, ME) at 57:31 but Erica Dorso (Farmingdale, ME) scored what would be the game winner at 67:15. Senior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) put a shot over the head of the Husson goalie Kelly Bocchino (Vassalboro, ME) just 43 seconds later off a pass from FY Jamie Brett (Otisfield, ME) to close the gap to 3-2. Despite a final surge in the last two minutes, the Monks were unable to net the equalizer and drop to 0-3 on the season and Husson improves to 2-0. First year Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had 10 saves in the loss and Bocchino had 9 saves. Three first year players, Jamie Brett (Otisfield, ME), Kim Glynn (Danvers, MA) and Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME) turned in solid performances for the Monks. St. Joe’s travels to Boston on Saturday, Sept. 16 for a 12:00 game against Simmons College. 9/9/06 - Farmington
Tops St. Joe’s
Standish, ME- The Monks tried to shake off a sluggish start, but were unable to overcome a two-goal deficit and fell 3-1 to Maine Farmington (1-0) on Saturday. Junior Darcy Ward (Dresden, ME) notched St. Joe’s (0-2) only goal of the game with 47 seconds to play. Junior Kristin Chambers (Gorham, ME) put Farmington up early as she netted a pass by sophomore Erika Lucas (Augusta, ME) in the fifth minute of the game. Lucas extended the lead at 59:11 as sophomore Andrea Tyler (Augusta, ME) picked up the first of her two assists. Farmington registered a final goal as sophomore Elyse Cole (Winthrop, ME) scored with just over five minutes to play. The Monks fought hard in the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Kaeleigh Barker (Chichester, NH) made five difficult saves to preserve the lead until Ward’s shot made it by in the 69th minute. St. Joe’s was led by sophomore Katie Seaman (Beverly, MA), senior Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA), and first-years Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME) and Kim Glynn (Danvers, MA). 9/6/06 - Monks
Fall to UNE in Season Opener
Biddeford, Me. - The SJC field hockey team (0-1) held the University of New England scoreless for 32 minutes, but eventually dropped a 2-0 decision in their season opener. Taryn Flagg gave the Nor’easters (2-0) the lead after netting a penalty stroke at 32:30 and UNE outshot St. Joe’s 12-5 in the first half. The Monks came out strong in the second half and held an advantage in shots (8-6) and penalty corners (5-2) but were unable to convert on scoring opportunities. Lisa Baillargeon put UNE up 2-0 on a shot through traffic at 49:35 for the only other goal of the game. St. Joe’s was paced by strong play in the middle from SR Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) and stellar performances by first year players Kimberly Glynn (Danvers, MA) and Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME). Sophomore Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) was solid on defense and FY Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had 8 saves in the loss. The team takes on Maine Farmington on Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the home opener.
