3/11/07 - Club Ice Hockey Wins Thrilling Championship!

Winslow, Maine - The Saint Joseph's College club ice hockey team won the 2007 Central Maine Collegiate Conference championship at Sukee Arena, beating Colby College in a dramatic overtime shootout.

Going into the playoffs as the No. 3 seed, the Monks swept the winner's bracket, then lost to Colby, 5-0, but since it was a double-elimination tournament, Saint Joseph's had a second chance - the winner would become champion.

In the tense championship game, the Monks trailed 2-1 with only two minutes to play in their season. Soon after a time out, Coach Kevin Fahey decided to pull his goalie and the strategy worked - Saint Joseph's Pat Cronin scored with only 90 seconds to play to tie the game at two. The horn sounded to mark the end of regulation and the teams headed to a shootout.

Coach Fahey elected for the Monks to shoot second. Goaltender Francois Renaud continued his brilliant play, while Monks Lucas Ward and Nate Pelletier both found the back of the net. Up 2-0, Renaud made saves on four straight Colby skaters to seal the game and the 2007 Championship for the Monks.
