2005 ARCHIVE

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY SEASON SUMMARY – FALL 2005

Following the loss of five seniors due to graduation from the 2004/05 and junior Matt Salch of Caribou, Maine, studying abroad in Germany for the fall semester, much uncertainty existed at the start of the 2005/06 campaign. What was a certainty was the fact that co-captains Matt Ferguson, a junior from South Windsor, Ct., and Stephen Dziadosz, a senior from Lincoln, R.I., would provide strong leadership. This proved vital, as the Monks were pleasantly surprised with a solid group of freshman runners who basically picked up where the 04/05 graduating seniors left off.

While Ferguson finished as the team’s number one runner, he was closely followed by two freshmen, Isaac Worrall of Gorham, Me., and Ryan Prescott of Pittsfield, N.H. The three were separated by an average of only 26 seconds when it was all said and done. All three of these top runners for the Monks were named on the All-Independent Honorable-Mention team at the season’s end.

Rounding out the top five were two more freshmen, Tony Myatt of Portland, Me., and Kevin McKim of North Attleboro, Mass, who proved very consistent and valuable towards the team’s success.

The sixth and seventh positions for the Monks usually included Bob Eliason of North Yarmouth, Me., a sophomore, and senior Dylan Frazier of York Beach, Me., while the previously mentioned Stephen Dziadosz and Ryan Ward of Dresden, Me., also a senior, completed the SJC band of runners.

This men’s team had some strong finishes, including two team wins, a second place finish, and two third place finishes. Victories came at the U-Maine Presque Isle Invitational and the NCAA Northeast Independents Championship held on the home course.

The team also beat the Alumni team in the first annual Alumni versus Varsity meet at home and finished 6th of 12 in the State of Maine meet held at Colby College. With these team accomplishments, particularly with such a young team, the future looks extremely bright.

At the conclusion of the season the following team awards were received: the Most Valuable Runner went to Matt Ferguson, the Most Improved Runner went to Kevin McKim, and the Coaches Award went to Stephen Dziadosz. The other team award for overall dedication to the program, namely the Prefontaine Award, also went to Matt Ferguson.

10/15/05 - St. Joe’s Takes 6th Place at State of Maine Meet

WATERVILLE, ME – The SJC men’s team finished strong in sixth place in the meet held at Colby College on Saturday. The Monks were led by the impressive 1-2-3 punch of Matt Ferguson in 42nd place, Ryan Prescott in 43rd and Isaac Worrall in 48th. The three were separated by only 16 seconds. For scoring purposes they placed in 30th, 31st and 33rd, respectively.

Following these three were Tony Myatt in 70th and Kevin McKim in 77th. Rounding out the Monks' efforts were Bob Eliason (86th), Dylan Frazier (87th) and Steve Dziadosz (99th).

"I am extremely pleased with our effort," stated Coach Dann. "We felt that we had a chance to catch Farmington if each runner executed their game plan. We came up only six points short and considering 4 of our top 5 are freshmen, I couldn’t be happier."

10/8/05 - St. Joe’s Takes Second in Runnin’ Monks Invitational

STANDISH, ME – Lyndon State College, VT, an NAIA power, dominated the rain-drenched St. Joe’s meet with 17 points. While the Lyndon State runners finished in five of the first six spots, the Monks packed into the next three.

Isaac Worrall was in 7th, Matt Ferguson in 8th, and Ryan Prescott was in 9th. These finishers, along with Tony Myatt in 15th and Kevin McKim in 19th enabled the Monks to finish in second place.

“The weather and wet course made it tough for all those competing; however, we ran quite well as the guys turned a negative (weather) into a positive and it showed,” stated Coach Tom Dann.

10/1/05 - St. Joe’s Takes Third at Farmington Invitational

FARMINGTON, ME – The men’s cross country team finished in third place among seven competing schools in Saturday’s race. The Monks' 88 points trailed only Bowdoin College (18pts) and host Maine-Farmington (66pts).

Junior co-captain Matt Ferguson ran an impressive 13th place in a tough field of runners while freshman Ryan Prescott led a group of fellow frosh for the SJC squad. Following Prescott’s 19th place finish were Isaac Worrall (23rd), Tony Myatt (24th) and Kevin McKim (29th).

Sophomore Bob Eliason was not too far behind in 35th and closing out the Monks' efforts were Steve Dziadosz (45th) and Ryan Ward (46th).

Coach Tom Dann said, “These guys don’t appear to be a young team, but more like a group of veterans. I like their attitude and ability to prepare.”

9/24/05 - St. Joe’s Cross Country Alumni vs. Varsity Race

STANDISH, ME – The first annual event was a success with five former SJC runners competing against the varsity squad. The alumni team was led by Matt Olson (’05), 5th place overall and Matt Vasil (’05), 8th place.

Also competing for the alumni team was Alan Reilly (’76) who started the Monks cross country program in 1974. Reilly finished in 10th while fellow grads, Jeff Crocker (’86) and Ray Ruby (’05) rounded out the team.

SJC President Dr. David House (15th) and Peter Dube, an ’84 USM grad whose wife graduated from St. Joe’s, also competed in the race.

The alumni team found the competition quite challenging, as the varsity team took the first four spots and seven of the top nine. The Monks were led by junior co-captain Matt Ferguson (1st place), Isaac Worrall (2nd) and Ryan Prescott (3rd).

The lead group was followed closely by Tony Myatt (4th), Kevin McKim (6th), Dylan Frazier (7th) and Bob Eliason (9th). Rounding out the Monks' efforts were senior co-captain Steve Dziadosz (12th) and Ryan Ward (14th).

“It was so pleasing to see the blending of some of the history of our cross country program with our younger runners. To have the man who started the program in the mid 70’s, some of the guys from the nationally-ranked teams of the mid 80’s mingling and competing with last year’s grads and our current team was a special sight,” said Coach Dann.

9/17/05 - ST. JOE'S WINS at UMPI INVITATIONAL

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Saint Joseph's College men’s cross country team was victorious in a quad meet at the University of Maine Presque Isle. Host Presque Isle, Maine Machias and Unity competed with UMPI runner Jeff Spraque winning the men’s race and Unity’s Eric Rudolf placing second.

The Monks were led by a strong 1-2-3 punch of freshman Isaac Worrall (Gorham, ME) in third place, junior co-captain Matt Ferguson (South Windsor, CT) in fifth and freshmen Ryan Prescott (Pittsfield, NH) in sixth. All three were within 36 seconds of each other.

Following this trio for the Monks were two more freshmen, Tony Myatt (Portland, ME) in eighth place and Kevin McKim (North Attleboro, MA) in tenth, the latter who, according to Coach Dann, “sealed the team victory by getting past three key opponents in the last mile and a half.”

Rounding out the Monk’s efforts were freshman Bob Eliason (North Yarmouth, ME) in 16th, senior Steve Dziadosz (Lincoln, RI) in 18th, freshman Dylan Frazier (York, ME) in 19th and sophomore Ryan Ward (Dresden, ME) in 21st.

9/10/05 - ST. JOE'S TAKES THIRD PLACE at UNE

Biddeford, ME - Saint Joseph'smen's cross country team finished third out of 10 teams at the UNE Invitational with a score of 97 points.

The Monks were led by junior co-captain Matt Ferguson (South Windsor, CT), who finished in 13th place, and freshman Isaac Worrall (Gorham, ME) was 16th. Following close behind were freshmen Ryan Prescott (Pittsfield, NH), 23rd, and Tony Myatt (Portland, ME) 26th.

The rest of the top seven for the Monks were senior Dylan Frazier (York, ME), Kevin McKim (North Attleboro, MA), and Bob Eliason. Also finishing were senior co-captain Steve Dziadosz (Lincoln, RI) and Ryan Ward (Dresden, ME).

"I am very pleased with both Matt's [Ferguson] improvement over last year (90 seconds faster) and the performance of our freshmen," stated Coach Dann. "We ran virtually the same as last year's race, but with freshmen and two other new members."

2005 Season Preview

The men's cross country team this fall of 2005 appears to be a fresh start. With the graduation of five seniors, one runner in Germany for the semester, and a few others not participating for various reasons, the team make-up is vastly different.

Top returnee from last year's squad is junior co-captain Matt Ferguson (South Windsor, Ct.), who promises to continue his movement towards the front of the pack. Also returning are senior co-captain Stephen Dziadosz (Lincoln, R.I.), the only member running his fourth season at SJC, and Ryan Ward (Dresden, Me.), also a senior.

A couple of SJC upperclassmen, but running for the first time, are senior Dylan Frazier (York Beach, Me.) and sophomore Bob Eliason (North Yarmouth, Me.), both of whom should contribute to the team's success.

Four freshmen join the squad, all of whom should play a primary role, as well. Two of them are local products, Isaac Worrall from Gorham and Tony Myatt from the Portland area, while Kevin McKim hails from North Attleboro, Mass. and Ryan Prescott has resided in both Canada and New Hampshire.

"I am thrilled to have these four join our team, along with some other new faces to the program. They should provide the much needed support to our top returnees following the graduation of several key performers," states Coach Dann.
