Steve is a senior left-handed pitcher on the Saint Joseph's College baseball team. "Stouty" was unable to pitch during his junior year as he sat out with an arm injury. Before his injury, Stout compiled an 8-2 record over his freshman and sophomore seasons and was 5-0 in his first year. He made two relief appearances for St. Joe's during their 2008 spring trip to Port Charlotte, FL and looks to play a large role this season for the Monks.

Baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn on Steve:

“Steve Stout is a left handed pitcher who could make a big difference in our ball club this year. After having two fine seasons as a freshman and sophomore (a combined record of 8-2), Steve was injured and could not play as a junior. After surgery he is just beginning to get back to his old form. If he continues to make progress he could be a key player, it is so valuable to have a quality left handed reliever coming out of the bull pen. Steve has a good attitude and only wants what is best for the team. Steve has a great sense of humor and always has a smile on his face - he adds a great deal to our team chemistry.”

Do you have any superstitions before you go into a big game?

Growing up playing baseball I always had superstitions. Every game and for every inning that I run out on the field I always jump across the foul line avoiding the chalk or paint at all costs. Any day that I pitch I never chew on anything like gum or seeds because if I do, things just won’t go right.

What did you do this past summer to get ready for your respective sport?

I missed last season because of shoulder surgery on my throwing arm, so a lot of time was spent in physical therapy. I also worked out a lot on my legs and core by running and biking. By the fall I was able to throw again.

What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at SJC?

During my sophomore year I got the nod to pitch at Bowdoin. It was a big non-conference game considering Bowdoin would be a team that we would eventually see in the regional tournament. It was one of my best personal performances shutting them out until the 8th inning when they came back and tied it 3-3. The game then ended in a tie because of darkness but I always think back about what I could have done better, or changed to make us win that game.

Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

Definitely my parents, they have always been so supportive for everything that I have been a part of. Coming and cheering me on at my games growing up and knowing the right thing to say whether I made a good or bad play. They have always given me good advice when I needed it, and have helped me become who I am today.

Why did you choose Saint Joseph's College?

I choose SJC because of its small, family-like atmosphere. I wanted to be able to get to know my professors and not just be a number in a class of 500 or more at a bigger school. I also wanted to play baseball and I really liked the program that Coach Sanborn runs. I definitely made the right decision to come to St. Joe's.


Can you tell us something about you that most people don’t know?

I like to learn and perform a lot of magic tricks, and I am also very afraid of deer.

What kind of effects has your Saint Joseph’s College Coaching staff had on your life?

The coaching staff, lead by Coach Sanborn, has helped me become a better baseball player and a better person. Coach leads by example and gets us involved in community service projects. The program has taught me to be more of a gentlemen and how to give back to others.

What is the funniest moment you’ve experienced as an athlete here at SJC?

During our trip to Florida this year, on our way back our flight was delayed along with a bunch of other flights and we had a lot of time to kill. So in good fun a couple players tied dental floss to a dollar bill and sat along the wall and kept the bill in the middle of the walkway in between gates. As flights came in and people walked by, they bent over to pick up the money and we would pull the money away so they couldn’t get it. It was a big hit to everyone in the terminal and at one point there could have been about a 100 people watching and cracking up. Everyone enjoyed it and it helped pass the time.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan on finding a job using my degree in Management somewhere around the Portland or Greater Boston area. I want to find a job that has a good management training program, or find somewhere that I will want to be everyday. Eventually down the road, I want to start my own business and work for myself.

If you could meet anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?

Tiger Woods! How cool would it be to meet a guy that totally revolutionized a sport almost entirely by himself? I play golf too and so it would be pretty awesome to play a round with him. It would also be pretty cool to see if he could teach me that cool juggling trick he does with a golf ball in some commercials!

What are your hobbies?

Golfing, snowboarding, magic tricks, and any type of pick-up sports game with friends.

What is your ideal day away from your sport?

If I couldn’t play golf or baseball it isn’t really an ideal day but I like going to the beach and just relaxing with friends.

After College do you still want to participate in your sport?

I still will want to play baseball during the summer in a league depending where I settle down and get a job. If I am around the Portland area I would like to play Twilight, and if I am back near my home in Gloucester, MA then I would play again in the Inter Town League. Down the road after I have kids I look forward to have the chance to coach baseball or teach them the game myself.

How was your spring trip?

It was great of course! How could Florida be bad? But seriously it was a successful trip with the team ending up 6-3, and the team really started playing well together. I also was able to pitch for the first time for the school since my sophomore year so it felt great to get back out there, it has been a long time coming.

What will you miss most about SJC baseball after you graduate this spring?

Knowing that I won’t be able to put on the uniform anymore. You take pride in being part of this baseball team because there is a lot of effort and commitment that goes along with it. It will also be the last time I will be able to play for a real competitive baseball team, not everyone can play in the pros. Not being able to be with my teammates all the time will be hard too because this is my family.

What do you expect from the GNAC teams?

I expect the competition in the GNAC to be very strong. I am sure the teams will be geared up and waiting to play us since we're the new guys in the conference and we played in the regional tournament the past two years. We will see some good pitching and hitting overall, which will make us a better team. I look forward to facing Suffolk this year because they have a good squad and beat us twice at home last year, so I’m sure they will have some swagger to them. But we’ll see what happens this year.
