5/20/05 - Monks End Season at ECAC Tournament

Milton, Mass. – Junior outfielder Chris Mearn (Milton, Mass.) went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead seventh-seeded Babson College past second-seeded Saint Joseph's, 10-6, in ECAC Division III New England Baseball Tournament first-round action Friday.

The Monks (32-10) got single runs in the first three innings off Beavers' starter Jim Burke (Milton, Mass.) to take a 3-0 lead, but the Beavers (21-18) scored a total of eight runs over the next four innings off St. Joe's starter Charlie Furbush (South Portland, Me.) to clinch the victory.

In addition to Mearn's offensive production, Babson got a four-RBI performance from sophomore third baseman Matt Chatterton (Fall River, Mass.), and a home run and three runs knocked in by junior catcher Ted Dziuba (Wayne, N.J.).

Burke held on for the win, going 5 1/3 innings to improve his record to 2-3. Freshman closer Robbie Leer (Edina, Minn.) threw the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save. Furbush took his first and only loss of the season, dropping his record to 7-1.

Senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, Me.), sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, Me.) and freshman Charlie Furbush (S.Portland, Me.) all had two hits apiece for the Monks.

Babson advances to the semifinal round and will take on sixth-seeded Keene State College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21 st at Curry College. The winner of that contest will travel immediately to Bridgewater State to play in the Championship Game against either Endicott College or Brandeis University.

5/18/05 - KIMBALL NAMED NAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph 's College senior pitcher, Greg Kimball (Lebanon, ME) was named baseball player of the week in the North Atlantic Conference.

Kimball pitched a complete game on Friday, May 13, striking out seven along the way and allowing a single run to guide the Monks to their first NAC Championship, earning Tournament MVP honors. Kimball's record stands at 6-2 with 51 strikeouts.

McINTOSH and FURBUSH HONORED BY NEIBA

2005 ALL-NEW ENGLAND DIVISION III BASEBALL TEAMS ANNOUNCED

Forty-nine players from 24 teams were named to the 2005 All-New England First, Second and Third teams announced by the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) yesterday. Fifteen schools in all had more than one player recognized.

2005 ECAC Division III New England Baseball Championship

Cape Cod, Mass. - With a regular season record of 26-11, Bridgewater State College was selected as the number one seed in the 2005 ECAC Division III New England Baseball Championship. The tournament is an eight-team field with quarterfinal and semifinal games held at Bridgewater and at Curry on Friday and Saturday, and the championship game held at Bridgewateron Saturday afternoon.

In the first-round on Friday, May 20, No. 1 seed Bridgewater State will host No. 8 seed Brandeis University (16-14), while No. 4 seed Endicott College (24-14) will play No. 5 seed MIT (20-13) at Bridgewater. At Curry College, the No. 3 seed Curry (20-12-2) will host No. 6 Keene State College (22-15). Also playing at Curry, No. 2 Saint Joseph's College (32-9) will play No. 7 seed Babson College (19-18).

The first-round winners will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at the respective site that the first games were played. After the semifinal finale at Curry, the winner will travel to Bridgewater to meet that site's last team standing.

North Atlantic Conference Tournament Results
KIMBALL LEADS MONKS TO NAC CHAMPIONSHIP!

STANDISH, MAINE – Senior Greg Kimball (Lebanon, ME) pitched a complete game, striking out 7 and allowing only one run as #1 seed Saint Joseph's College (32-9, 14-1 NAC) defeated #2 seed Husson College, 7-1 in the North Atlantic Conference Championship game at Mahaney Diamond. Saint Joe's went 3-0 in its first NCAA Conference Tournament appearance.

Kimball improved to 6-2 on the season while senior Mike Cowperthwaite (Prospect Harbor, ME) pitched 6.1 innings for Husson (25-17, 11-5 NAC) and was tagged with the loss.

Junior Jason Harvey (Bucksport, ME) scored Husson's only run of the game in the first inning. The Monks went to work in the bottom of the inning as senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) singled and junior Ben Muniz (Readfield, ME) crushed a 2-run shot over the right field fence to go up 2-1.

Seniors Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) and Jake Rodden (Somersworth, ME) both singled and St. Joe's added a run in the second inning after Cowperthwaite had a throwing error to first.

The Monks went up 5-1 in the third as freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) scored on an error and Rodden singled to score freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH).

Rodden finished 3 for 4 and notched his third single of the game in the fifth inning to score Muniz who had also singled. Enman reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by freshman Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) to put St. Joe's up 7-1.

Seniors Kyle Mathieu (Winslow, ME) and Bill Kane (Bradford, ME) each had two hits for the Eagles.

Saint Joseph's Baseball now waits through "Selection Sunday," May 15, to see if it earns an at-large Pool B bid for the NCAA New England Regional Tournament to be played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. on Cape Cod.

North Atlantic Conference Tournament Results (Day 2)
GAME 3

STANDISH, MAINE – #2 Husson College (24-15, 10-3) defeated #4 Castleton State College 12-1 in game 3 of the NAC Tournament at Mahaney Diamond today.

Junior Jason Harvey (Bucksport, ME) led the way for the Eagles with a 3 for 4 performance that included a homerun, a triple and 3 RBI's. Junior Travis Tripp (Bar Harbor, ME) earned the win, pitching 7 innings and allowing 4 hits.

Husson jumped out to an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the first inning and added 3 more runs in both the third and fourth innings to make it 9-0.

Castleton (18-21, 7-7) scored a run in the bottom of the fourth as senior Chad Phillips (Huntington, VT) singled and went on to score.

The Eagles plated 3 more runs on 4 hits in the fifth.

Husson junior Justin Spencer (Brewer, ME) went 3 for 4 and sophomore Adam Sheehan (Bucksport, ME) added two hits for the Eagles.

Phillips went 2 for 4 for Castleton and senior Travis Myers (Mountain Home, ID) went 5 innings, giving up 13 hits.

With this second loss, Castleton State is eliminated; Husson College will go on to face the winner of the 2 PM Becker-St. Joe's game.

GAME 4

STANDISH, MAINE – Freshman hurler Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) earned his 7th win of the season, pitching a complete game and striking out 14 as #1 seed Saint Joseph's College (31-9, 13-1 NAC) defeated #3 Becker College 6-0 in Game 4 of the NAC Tournament at Mahaney Diamond today.

The Monks scored 4 runs in the third on 5 hits to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) singled and scored in the fourth inning to make it 5-0.

In the sixth inning, freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH) hit his sixth home run of the season to put St. Joe's up 6-0.

Senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) went 3 for 4 and Cieslak was 2 for 3 to lead the Monks.

Sophomore Cory Shepherd (Worcester, MA) went 2 for 3 for the Hawks (23-16, 8-6 NAC) and freshman Jim Pesente (Whitman, MA) struck out four and gave up 11 hits in the loss.

The Hawks will meet the Eagles of Husson College at 6 PM to determine who will face Saint Joseph's in tomorrow's 10 AM Championship game.

5/9/05 - BASEBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS ANNOUNCED
Saint Joseph's Tandem of Furbush, McIntosh
nab CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR Title

The North Atlantic Conference announced the 2005 Baseball All-Conference teams on Monday, May 9, along with Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year selections. Saint Joseph's took home most of the major awards in 2005, as rookie hurler Charlie Furbush (S. Portland, Me.) and senior catcher Derek McIntosh (Auburn, Me.) shared NAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR honors. Freshman outfielder Keith Renaud of Becker earned the league's Rookie of the Year award.

Furbush and McIntosh both received NAC All-Conference First Team recognition as well, as St. Joe's placed four players on the 2005 team with Mark Clapp (So., Blue Hill, Me.) and Andy Exley (Portland, Me.) joining the Co-Players of the Year. Rounding out the All-Conference First Team were Travis Myers (Castleton State), Devin Caron and Keith Renaud (Becker), and Sean Brawn, Jason Harvey, and Kyle Mathieu (Husson).

Furbush led his team from the rubber this season, going 6-0 through eight appearances, with a 1.01 ERA. In addition, Furbush struck out 49 batters while only surrendering nine walks, holding opponents to a .187 batting average. McIntosh, who played in 36 of St. Joseph's 37 outings this season, led the NAC in batting average (.455) and home runs (9), while posting a .991 fielding percentage.

The NAC also awarded two more SJC players All-Conference Second Team honors, those being senior pitcher Greg Kimball (Lebanon, Me.), and rookie outfielder Luke Enman (Milan, N.H.).

In the Monks' first year of competition in the North Atlantic Conference, head coach Will Sanborn guided his club to the top of the standings and a shot at this year's tournament championship. For his efforts, Sanborn was selected by the league's coaches as the 2005 NAC COACH OF THE YEAR. Castleton State earned the 2005 Team Sportsmanship Award.

Nomination and voting for NAC All-Conference teams is conducted by the head coaches of the member institutions the week prior to the NAC Championship.

Founded in the Fall of 1999, the North Atlantic Conference is comprised of 13 NCAA Division-III institutions across New England. They are Bay Path College, Becker College, Castleton State College, Elms College, Husson College, Johnson State College, Lasell College, Lesley University, Maine Maritime Academy, the University of Maine-Farmington, Mount Ida College, Thomas College, and Wheelock College. Saint Joseph's joined the NAC as an Associate Member/Baseball for the 2005 season.

BASEBALL TOURNAMENT GAMES POSTPONED
The North Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament games scheduled to be played today and tomorrow, Sat.-Sun., May 7-8, at Saint Joseph's College, Standish, Maine, have been rained out.

The games will now be played on Thurs. and Fri., May 12-13, at Saint Joseph’s College. The schedule is as follows:

2 PM Saint Joseph’s College vs. Becker College (MA)
6 PM Winner Castleton-Husson game vs. Loser St. Joe’s-Becker game

5/6/05 - North Atlantic Conference Tournament Results (Day 1)
GAME 1

STANDISH , MAINE – Senior Greg Kimball (Berwick, ME) pitched 7 2/3 innings to lead #1 seed Saint Joseph 's College past #4 seed Castleton State College 3-2 in the opening game of the 2005 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball tournament at Mahaney Diamond. Kimball gave up only two hits, while walking four and striking out two for his sixth win of the season.

The Monks (30-9) (12-1 NAC) needed to rally for the win after falling behind 2-1 to the Spartans (18-20) (7-6 NAC) after five innings. The Monks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with one run on a gap triple by Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) and an RBI single by senior Jake Rodden (Somersworth, NH).

The big hit for the Monks came in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out. Senior Derek McIntosh Auburn, ME) hit a 3-2 curve ball over the left center field fence for his eleventh home run of the season to give the Monks the go-ahead run.

Furbush made a rare relief appearance with a runner on second base and two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Furbush got the Spartans clean-up hitter to strike out to end the inning and retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning on a ground out and two fly balls to earn his second save of the season.

First year Tom Cummings (Athol, MA) was the losing pitcher for the Spartans. Cummings allowed nine hits in eight innings of work.

GAME 2

STANDISH, MAINE – First year Keith Renaud (Southbridge, MA) hit a two-run home run with one out in the top of the ninth inning to lead #3 seed Becker College past #2 seed Husson College 6-5 in game two of the 2005 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball tournament at Mahaney Diamond.

The Hawks (23-15) (8-5 NAC) jumped out to an early lead on a solo home-run in the top of the first inning by Kevin Renaud (Southbridge, MA). The Eagles (23-16) (9-4 NAC) did one better in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run home run by junior Sean Brawn (Augusta, ME). Becker tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning on a solo home run by junior Devin Caron (Portland, ME). The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 4-2 lead.

Husson loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and junior Justin Spencer (Brewer, ME) delivered the big hit with a bases clearing triple to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead. The Eagles lead looked solid until sophomore Cory Sheppard (Worcester, MA) singled with one out in the ninth and Keith Renaud drove a pitch from senior Barrett Dionne (Bangor, ME) over the left center field fence for a two-run home run.

First year Mike Carbonneau pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season for the Hawks. Carbonneau retired seven of the eight Husson batters he faced while recording one strike out.

Spencer had two hits and three RBI's to lead Husson at the plate. Dionne took the loss on the hill for the Eagles.

5/3/05 - LUKE ENMAN NAMED NAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Saint Joseph's College freshman Luke Enman (OF, Milan, NH) was named the North Atlantic Conference's Player of the Week.

In an 8-2 week for the Monks, Enman batted an impressive .514, starting all 10 outings for St. Joseph's. Enman collected 18 hits, including 5 doubles and 3 home runs, along with 14 RBIs.

Saint Joseph's is in its first year of competition in the NAC, currently holding first place with a 11-1 conference record and 29-9 overall record and will host the Conference tournament this weekend.

The NAC Baseball Championship Tournament will take place this weekend at #1 seed Saint Joseph's College, May 6, 7, & 8.

Saint Joseph's Sweeps Maine-Farmington, 7-2, 12-1
Takes North Atlantic Conference Title

STANDISH, MAINE – The Saint Joseph's College Monks (27-9, 10-1) earned a 7-2 victory over the University of Maine–Farmington Beavers (6-16, 1-8) to clinch the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) regular season baseball title. St. Joe's will host the NAC baseball tournament scheduled for May 6-8, 2005.

St. Joe's scored all seven runs in the first three frames an d r eceived a solid performance from first-year pitcher Miles Johnson (Berwick, ME). Johnson recorded his third win of the season, pitching five innings, allowing four hits and striking out three batters. Reliever Billy Chapman (Eddington, ME) shut down the Beavers in the final two innings.

The Monks totaled nine hits on offense. First-year Luke Enman (Milan, NH) had two hits and one RBI for the Monks. Junior Nick Arno (Windham, ME) collected two RBIs with a double in the third inning. Eight starters had a hit in the contest for Saint Joe's.

Maine-Farmington scored an unearned run in the third inning and added another run in the fourth on a solo home run by first-year Matt Brey (Brunswick, ME) Senior Ray Doubleday (Lisbon, NH) pitched a complete game in a losing effort for the Beavers.

Junior Steve Lambert (Gonic, NH) struck out five batters and went the distance to earn his third win of the season in the Monks' 12-1 game two win over the Beavers.

St. Joe's (28-9, 11-1) got off to another good start scoring two runs in the first and five more in the to take a 7-0 lead in the contest. The Monks added five more runs in the next three frames to make the score 12-0 after six innings. Lambert, who allowed only three hits, was unable to hold the shutout when the Beavers scored a run in the top of the seventh on a double, a ground out and a sacrifice fly.

First-year Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) led the Monk offense with a two-run home run and a two run double for four total RBIs. Repeat hitters for the Monks included Furbush, senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) two hits and an RBI, sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) two hits and an RBI and senior Andy Exley (Portland, ME) with two singles. Senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) hit a two-run home run and first-year Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, ME) had a two-run double to help the offensive attack.

First-year pitcher Ben Savielo (Wilton, ME) was the losing pitcher in game 2 allowing nine runs (eight earned) in four innings of work.

St. Joe's Sweeps Thomas
STANDISH, MAINE – Freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) pitched a complete game shutout to lead Saint Joe's past Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball contest at Mahaney Diamond.

Furbush improved his collegiate record to 6-0 with a dominating performance over the Terriers pitching seven innings, giving up only four hits, striking out 13 batters and allowing no base on balls.

The Monks (25-9) (8-1 NAC) put single runs on the board in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three complete innings. Furbush cruised through the middle innings and the Monks added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 4-0 lead after six innings. Furbush closed the door in the seventh with two routine ground balls and a strike out.

Senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) had 3 singles and one RBI. First-year Luke Enman (Milan, NH) recorded two hits and Furbush helped at the plate with a single and a double and one run scored. Andy Exley (Portland, ME) hit a solo home run in the contest to help the offense.

Junior Ryan Rulman (Westbrook, ME) was the losing pitcher for the Terriers (9-16) (1-6 NAC). Rulman allowed 10 hits over 6 innings.

Senior Greg Kimball (Lebanon, ME) held Thomas College to two runs over five innings to improve his record to(4-3) and lead the Monks (26-9) (9-1 NAC) past the Terriers (9-17) (1-7 NAC) in game two.

Thomas took an early lead with two runs in the first inning but the Monks scored one in the first and added five more in the second to take a 6-2. Kimball shut down the Terriers after the first inning and left the game after five innings with a 6-2 lead.

The Terriers battled back with two runs in the sixth inning off sophomore reliever Dan Enman (Milan, NH). Enman walked the leadoff batter in the sixth and then allowed a two-run home run to the Terriers Brandon Connors (Rochester, NH). With the score 6-4 and one out in the sixth inning, Coach Will Sanborn called upon his closer, senior Jack Hughes (Dudley, MA). Hughes recorded the last two outs of the inning and his teammates provided three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding 9-4 lead. Hughes recorded his fourth save of the season by holding the Terriers scoreless in the top half of the seventh.

Senior Andy Exley (Portland, ME) had three hits, including his second home run of the day, and three RBI's to lead the offense. The Monks had four players, Senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME), first-year Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME), first-year Luke Enman (Milan, NH) and first-year Brian Schools (Gorham, ME), with two hits in the game. Senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) hit a solo home run early in the game to help the Monk offense.

Connors led the Terriers offense with two hits and four RBI's. First-year pitcher Mark Rouleau (Keene, NH) took the loss giving up 13 hits to the Monks in six innings of work.

St. Joe's Defeats Rivier College, Enman hits two home runs

STANDISH, MAINE – A second inning grand slam by freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH) lifted St. Joe's to an 8-6 victory over visiting Rivier College. Senior Matt Vasil (Enfield, NH) earned his third win of the season as St. Joe's improved to 24-9.

The bats came alive in the second inning as the Monks scored 5 runs. Junior Nick Arno (Windham, ME) walked and freshmen Andrew Wood (South Portland, ME) and Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) singled. Senior captain Andy Exley sent Arno home on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, M ) walked to load the bases and Enman hit the 4-run shot to make it 5-0.

St. Joe's added another run in the fourth as Exley hit a double and Clapp singled to send him home.

Rivier loaded the bases with three hits in the fifth, but Vasil struck out the next batter and the Monks got the final out on a ground ball to third. The Raiders scored a run in the sixth as freshman Kevin Moyer (Georgetown, MA) hit a double and sophomore Scott Fournier Pepperell, MA) walked. Sophomore Mike Crawford (Yarmouth, M ) singled to score Moyer and make it 6-1.

The Raiders added a run in the seventh but St. Joe's responded with a two run homer by Enman that scored freshman Matt Shanahan (Wincheste , MA). Rivier scored three more runs in the ninth, but the Monks closed out the inning with freshman Dave Doucette (Ipswich, MA) recording the save.

Wood was 3-for-4 and Clapp, Enman and Schools had two hits apiece for the Monks.

Huskies Score Two in Ninth, Down Monks 10-8

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to break an 8-8 tie and went on to defeat the St. Joseph's College Monks 10-8 in a non-conference game played Thursday in Gorham. The game was originally scheduled to be a night game at St. Joseph's, but was moved to USM due to all the rain. Southern Maine improved to 19-9 overall with the win. St. Joseph's drops to 23-9.

In the ninth inning, the Huskies put runners at the corners on a walk to sophomore DH Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) and a single by senior 1B Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine). Sophomore C Max Arsenault (Boothbay, Maine) beat out an infield single to bring in McGhee. After a hit batter loaded the bases, freshman OF Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Brewer.

The Huskies appeared to be in command of the game, taking an 8-4 lead in the seventh on an RBI triple by Arsenault and a squeeze bunt by junior OF Brent Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine).

St. Joseph's pulled within one with three in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by junior 3B Nick Arno (Windham, Maine), an infield error and an RBI fielder's choice by senior OF Andy Exley (Portland, Maine).
The Monks tied the game in the eighth inning when junior DH Aaron Cieslak (Windham, Maine) drove in senior OF Derek McIntosh (Auburn, Maine) from third with a fielder's choice.

Southern Maine opened the game with a run in the first inning on Brewer's RBI single. The Monks came back in their half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout by freshman 1B Charlie Furbush (South Portland, Maine) and a bases loaded walk to senior C Jake Rodden (Somersworth, N.H.).

The Monks extended their advantage to 3-1 in the fourth on Exley's RBI single.

A sacrifice fly by sophomore OF Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine) and an RBI single by McGhee tied the game for USM in the fifth. The Huskies took their first lead of the game with three runs in the sixth. Skeffington hit a two-run homer, and sophomore SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) scored before Bourque was put out on a double-steal attempt.

Sophomore Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine), the fourth of four pitchers for USM, picked up his fourth win of the season with 1.2 innings of relief work. Senior Jack Hughes (Dudley, Mass.), the last of four St. Joseph's hurlers, was tagged with the loss.
St. Joseph's will be at home on Friday at 2 PM for a non-conference game against Rivier College.

FURBUSH NAMED NAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Saint Joseph's College freshman Charlie Furbush (P/1B, South Portland, ME) was named the North Atlantic Conference's Player of the Week.

Furbush posted a respectable 7-for-11 from the plate (.636) with three runs and two RBIs, while picking up two stolen bases and two walks during a 3-0 week.

Saint Joseph's is in its first year of competition in the NAC, currently holding first place with a 7-1 conference record and 23-8 overall record.

St. Joe's Sweeps Plymouth State

STANDISH, MAINE – St. Joe's jumped out to an early lead and earned an 11-4 win over visiting Plymouth State. Freshman Steven Stout (Gloucester, MA) recorded his fourth win of the season, pitching 5 innings and striking out 6 batters.

The Monks (22-8) went up 3-0 on a 3-run homer by freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH) that scored senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) and freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME).

The lead was extended in the second inning as St. Joe's batted around and scored 6 runs to make it 9-0. Freshman Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, ME/Deering) walked, freshman Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) singled and senior captain Andy Exley (Portland, ME/Deering) singled to score Dvilinsky. Sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) walked and Furbush hit a bases clearing double. Enman walked and senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) hit a 2-RBI double.

Plymouth State answered back in the third inning with a grand slam by junior C.J. Rousseau Merrimack, NH), but St. Joe's scored two more runs in the sixth as McIntosh hit a 2-run homer to put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

McIntosh and Furbush had two hits apiece for St. Joe's. Senior John Perkins took the loss for the visitors.

Freshman Miles Johnson (Berwick, ME) struck out 6 batters and earned his second win of the season in an 8-5 game 2 win for St. Joe's.

The Monks (23-8) got off to another good start, scoring a run in the first and third innings until giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in the fourth inning. The Monks regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, however, as Luke Enman and Aaron Cieslak scored to make it 4-3.

McIntosh scored in the fifth inning off of a single by Cieslak and St. Joe's added 3 more runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-3. Schools doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball. Schools scored as Exley struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike. Furbush singled and drove in Exley and Furbush scored before Enman was thrown out at third while trying to turn a double into a triple.

Plymouth (5-23) had a rally in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on singles by sophomore Dylan Mullin (Derry, NH) and senior Derek Guimond (Lewiston, ME) but St. Joe's held on for the win.

Freshman Jim VanGyzen (Foster, RI) struck out 6 batters in a losing effort for the Panthers.

The Monks take on the USM Huskies at Mahaney Diamond on Thursday, April 28 at 5 PM.

Husson Takes One from St. Joe's in Doubleheader Split
Furbush throws second complete-game shut out
BANGOR, MAINE – Freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) tossed seven shutout innings, striking out 5 and allowing only 3 hits in St. Joe's 2-0 win at Husson College.

This marks Furbush's fifth with of the season and the Monks improve to 21-7 and extend their win streak to 11 games.

St. Joe's scored all the runs they would need in the second inning as freshman Luke Enman (Milan, NH) doubled and moved to third on a single by senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME). Freshman Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, ME) walked to load the bases and Husson pitcher Mike Cowpert (3-3) struckout the next two batters, but walked senior captain Andy Exley (Portland, ME) to score Enman. Cieslak scored on a wild pitch.

Enman went 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base while Cieslak was 3-for-3. St. Joe's (21-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, as Exley singled and sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) singled. Exley advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) grounded out to the short stop.

The Monks added a run in the fourth inning as Clapp singled and scored on a single by Enman.

Justin Spen and Sean Brown singled for Husson (19-13) in the sixth inning and scored on a double by Kyle Mathieu to even the score at 2-2.

The game went to an extra inning after a scoreless seventh inning and St. Joe's was unable to score a run. In the bottom of the eighth with 2-outs and bases loaded, Nate Cousins scored on a wild pitch to give Husson the win.

Exley, Clapp and Enman all had two hits for the Monks.

Although Husson managed to take game two, St. Joe's remains in first place in the NAC with a 7-1 conference record while Husson is in second place at 9-3.

St. Joe's plays Plymouth State on 4/26 at 4 pm at home.

STANDISH, MAINE – Freshman pitcher Steve Stout (Gloucester, MA) earned his third win of the season with a shut-out of the visiting Lyndon State College Hornets.

St. Joe's (18-7) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after senior captain Andy Exley (Portland, ME) singled and senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) drove him in with a home run. Junior Nick Arno (Windham, ME) hit a solo home run in the second inning and the Monks extended the lead with two more runs in the third.

In the fourth inning, freshman Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) hit a double and scored on a triple by sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hills, ME). Freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) singled to score Schools and put the Monks up, 7-0.

Senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) hit a solo home run in the fifth and St. Joe's scored 4 more runs in that inning, followed by two more in the sixth.

Cieslak finished with a home run, double and single, while Exley, Clapp, Dvilinsky and Arno had two hits apiece for St. Joe's.

SANBORN REACHES 300 WINS IN GAME 2


Coach Will Sanborn (13th Year) earned his 300th career victory today as St. Joe's repeated its game 1 performance, defeating Lyndon State, 11-1.

Senior Matt Vasil (Enfield, NH) struck out 3 and gave up 3 hits in his second win of the season.

After two scoreless innings, the bats came alive in the bottom of the third with St. Joe's batting around and scoring 5 runs on 4 hits. The Monks added 3 runs to go up 8-0 in the fourth as Furbush and Arno singled and senior Jake Rodden crushed a triple.

Lyndon State pitcher Travis Morehouse walked in two runs in the fifth to give St. Joe's a commanding 10-0 lead. The Hornets scored their only run of the day in the sixth inning as Josh Willis singled, Brent Cox walked, Matt Lapham reached on an error and Jon Sanborn singled to score Willis.

St. Joe's added a run in the bottom of the sixth and senior Jack Hughes (Dudley, MA) retired the side in the seventh to finish with five strike-outs in two innings. Junior Nick Arno (Windham, ME) had two hits for the Monks.

The next game for St. Joe's is at Southern Maine on Friday, April 22, at 3 PM.

SAINT JOSEPH'S SWEEPS ELMS COLLEGE
IN NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

HOLYOKE, MA - Elms College freshman right fielder Joe Bergeron (Granville, MA) went 1 for 3 with two RBI in game one, but St. Joseph 's College (ME) collected a combined 34 hits to post 10-3 and 12-0 victories in Sunday afternoon's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader at McKenzie Stadium.

Elms College fell to 2-13 overall, 1-5 NAC, while St. Joseph's extended its winning streak to seven games to improve to 17-7 overall, 6-0 NAC.

In game one, the Monks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Blazers battled back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame behind a RBI single by freshman pitcher Jim Drummond (Springfield, MA) and a two-run single by Bergeron.

The Monks plated single runs in the second and third innings to take a 5-3 lead and then scored two more runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to pull away.

In the sixth, freshman right fielder Matt Shanahan (Winchester, MA) hit a two-run double down the left field line. An outfield error and a RBI sacrifice fly by freshman left fielder Luke Enman (Milan, NH) capped off the four-run inning.

Junior pitcher Steve Lambert (Gonic, NH) allowed three earned runs and struck out five in four innings to earn his second win of the year.

In game two, the Monks jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and sophomore pitcher Ben Cutter (Westbrook, ME) allowed just two hits and struck out seven in four innings to earn his second victory of the season.

The Monks return to action on Tuesday, April 19 for a non-conference match-up with Lyndon State (VT) beginning at 3:00 p.m.

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (13-7) swept Friday's doubleheader against Maine Presque Isle 6-0 and 13-0.

In game one, freshman Miles Johnson (Berwick, ME) retired the side in the third inning and finished with 8 strikeouts in five innings. Johnson allowed only one hit to pitcher Chris Saucier in the fourth inning.

Freshman Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, ME) reached on a walk and scored as freshman Matt Shanahan flew out to right field.

Senior captain Andy Exley (Portland, ME) had one of his four hits to lead off a four-run third inning for the Monks as Exley, freshman Luke Enman (Enfield, NH), senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) and freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) all scored to make it 5-0.

Freshman Adam Cousins (Brooksville, ME) gave St. Joe's a 6-0 lead after scoring off an Exley single in the fifth inning.

Freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) had two hits for the Monks.

Vasil Hurls No Hitter


Senior Matt Vasil (Enfield, NH) struckout 11 batters and pitched a complete game shutout to give St. Joe's a 13-0 victory in game two. Vasil retired the side in the sixth inning and gave up no hits in his first victory of the season.

St. Joe's scored three runs in the first and second innings and the offense kept the heat on the UMPI pitching staff for the entire game. Senior Derek McIntosh hit a two RBI homer in the second inning scoring Exley.

The Monks made it 11-0 in the third inning, with 5 runs, and then added two more runs in the fifth when senior Jack Hughes (Dudley, MA) drove in McIntosh and junior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME) with a single.

St. Joe's is on the road this weekend for a 1:00 PM doubleheader at Becker College (Mass.) on Saturday and a 12:00 PM doubleheader at Elms College (Mass.) on Sunday.

McIntosh named NAC Player of the Week

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph 's College senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME) was named baseball player of the week for the week of 4/11/05 in the North Atlantic Conference.

McIntosh went 14 for 24 from the plate in a 5-3 week. He had 13 runs, 12 RBI's, 5 walks and 4 home runs, including two against NAC foe Thomas College.

Saint Joseph 's College is in its first year of competition in the NAC. Member schools include: Bay Path, Becker, Castleton State, Elms, Husson, Johnson State, Lasell, Lesley, Maine Maritime, Maine Farmington, Mount Ida, Thomas and Wheelock College.

The Monks stand at 11-7 overall, and 2-0 in conference play.

Exley delivers clutch hit

STANDISH, MAINE – Senior captain Andy Exley's (Portland, ME) 3-run 2-out homer in the seventh inning broke a 3-3 tie and gave St. Joe's a 6-3 win over visiting Colby College.

The Monks improved to 11-7 and Colby dropped to 0-15.

After Colby scored twice in the top of the first, St. Joe's tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Exley and sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, ME) singled and Colby pitcher Robert Jacobs (Mequon, Wisc.) intentionally walked NAC Player of the Week, senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn, ME). He then walked freshman Charlie Furbush (S. Portland, ME) and junior Aaron Cieslak, which walked in two runs.

Colby took a 3-2 lead in the second inning as Nick Spillane (Darian, CT) singled to score Robert Rosenbaum (Washington, DC).

St. Joe's tied the game in the bottom of the third as Furbush singled, Cieslak walked and junior Nick Arno (Windham, ME) reached first on a dropped third strike. Furbush scored after a throwing error by the catcher.

In the seventh inning, Arno reached first again on a dropped third strike and freshman Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) walked. Exley crushed a 3-run homer with two outs to seal the victory.

Clapp went 3/4, Exley was 3/5 and Furbush went 2/3. Colby was led by Spillane 2/5, Brian Liberty 2/4, Tyler Hales 2/5 and Steve Sandak 2/3.

St. Joe's plays at home on Friday against UMPI in a doubleheader beginning at 3 PM.

Baseball Splits with Husson
Furbush throws complete-game shut out

STANDISH, MAINE – In the first game, freshman Charlie Furbush ( South Portland , ME ) tossed nine shutout innings, striking out 10 and senior Derek McIntosh ( Auburn , ME ) homered in the fifth inning to seal a 4-0 St. Joe's victory over visiting Husson College.

The Monks scored two runs in the first inning and added another run in the third. McIntosh gave St. Joe's another insurance run in the fifth with a solo home run. Freshmen Luke Enman ( Milan , NH ) and Brian Schools ( Gorham , ME ) had two singles apiece for St. Joe's.

Husson gets 10-3 win in game two

Husson jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first, 1 run in the second, and two runs in the third inning. St. Joe's mounted a comeback in the third as Schools scored off a McIntosh single. Enman hit a home run in the fourth inning and McIntosh scored in the fifth to make it 5-3.

The big blow came in the sixth inning as Jason Harvey hit a 3 run homer and Husson added two more runs to extend their lead to 10-3. St. Joe's was held hitless over the final innings.

The Monks play Colby at home on Wednesday 4/13 at 5PM.

St. Joseph's Splits Doubleheader with Thomas

Standish, ME - Thomas College jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the second inning and held on to a 14-13 win over Saint Josephs College (9-6) in the first game of today's doubleheader.

Offensive leaders for the Terriers were Scott Brawn (2-3, 1HR, 2 RBI), Ryan O'Connor (2-4, 1 Grand slam, 4 RBI) and Jordan McDonald (2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI). Brian Rulman pitched 2 and 2/3 innings in relief for the win. Pulman gave up 1 run and 4 hits.

Senior Derek McIntosh (4-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI), freshman Andrew Divilinsky (2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and junior Nick Arno (3-3, 1 RBI) kept St. Joes in the game.

With 4 runs in the third inning in game 2, Saint Joseph's fought off the Terrier attack and held on for a 6-5 win. Once again, it was Derek McIntosh (2-3, 1 HR, 5 RBI) and Andrew Divilinsky (1-3, 1RBI) who helped St. Joe's to the win. Freshman pitcher Steve Stout threw for 6 and 2/3 innings and senior Jack Hughes struck out the last batter for the save.

For the Terriers, Scott Brann (1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI), Lance Haynes (1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and Tim Mercier (1-1, 1 HR) led the offense.

Standish, ME - The first game of the doubleheader went to Castleton State, 5-4. Winning pitcher Travis Myers (Mountain Home, ID) went for five innings with 7 hits, 4 runs and two strikeouts. Key players for Castleton were Josh Racicot (Bristol, VT) who had 2 RBI singles and Chris Alger (New London, CT), who had an RBI double in the first.

Losing pitcher for the Monks, Junior Steve Lambert (Gonic, NH ), went 4 innings and had 1 strikeout. Freshman Charlie Furbush (South Portland, ME) went 3-4 and had an RBI double, and senior Aaron Cieslak (Windham, ME ) had a two-run homer in the third.

St. Joe's took the second game of the double header 11-4. Sophomore Ben Cutter (Westbrook, ME) was the winning pitcher with two strikeouts and only one hit against him. In the first inning, Aaron Cieslak had a two-run double to start the Monks off. Senior Andy Exley (Portland, ME) had a RBI triple and an RBI single. Freshmen Charlie Furbush and Brian Schools (Gorham, ME) both had RBI doubles.

The losing Pitcher for Castleton State, Jesse Grosebeck (Poultney, VT), had one strikeout. In the seventh inning Jeremy Henderson (Lyndonville, VT) hit a two-run homer, but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Monks who had a steady lead from the beginning.

This split puts the Monks at a record of 8-5 and the Spartans at 4-7.

Saint Joseph's Sweeps Castleton State in Home Opener

Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Monks charged onto the field, energized by a chance to play baseball on a warm (in the sun anyway) spring day in Maine and bulldozed the Castleton State Spartans, sweeping their home opener 6-0 and 5-3.

In the first game, St. Joe's had a 5-0 streak in the very first inning, leading to their ultimate 6-0 victory over the Spartans. Freshman lefty Charlie Furbush (South Portland, Me.) led the Monks with five shutout innings and three strikeouts. Sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue Hill, Me.) went three-for-three with a double, two singles and a walk.

Sophomore Philip Puleo (Utica, N.Y.) and junior Adam Massey (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl.) each had a double for the Spartans in game 1.

The Monks were on a roll, and wrapped up the doubleheader with a 5-3 victory in game 2. Senior Greg Kimball (Lebanon, Me.) went six innings with no earned runs and four strikeouts. Freshman Andrew Dvilinsky (Portland, Me.), led the offense with a two-run double and an RBI single.

Freshman Tom Cummings (Athol, Mass.) pitched six innings, taking the loss for the visitors; junior Mark Alger (New London, Ct.) had a home run.

The Monks will have another go-round with Castleton State tomorrow, 4/7, at Mahaney Diamond, with the first pitch going out at 2 PM.
