Monks Wrap up Season with Awards Dinner STANDISH, ME - Five awards were handed out at the Saint Joseph's College women's basketball team banquet, held on April 19. Senior guard /forward Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) won the MVP award, and senior Danielle Somma (Gray, ME), first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME), and sophomores Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, RI) and Debi Drown (Gorham, ME) were also honored. A second team pick in the national All-Independent voting, MVP Kaylin Regula was a steady presence for the team and managed to play in every position this season. Regula posted one of the few triple doubles in SJC women's basketball history with a 10 point, 12 rebound and 12 assist performance in this year's Independent Tournament semifinal win over St. Joseph 's of Brooklyn. Danielle Somma won the Defensive Player of the Year award after a season dedicated to limiting the opponent's best scorers. A defensive stalwart, Somma proved she could be a threat on the offensive end as well, posting a career high 15 points against Maine Presque Isle in the D3 Independents Championship game. Alysn Ludwig was honored as Rookie of the Year after earning 6 starts and more importantly, numerous finishes. Ludwig averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds a game this season and recorded 13 points and 10 boards in thirty-eight minutes of play in the Championship game. Debi Drown took the Team Spirit Award and was a vocal supporter of the team on the court and on the sideline. Drown had a break-out game against Maine Presque Isle, recording 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in a regular season match-up. Yoandree Pierre-Jacques earned the Most Improved Award in her first season on the basketball squad. Pierre-Jacques started 6 games this season and posted two double-doubles including a 14-point, 15-rebound performance against Fort Kent in her first intercollegiate start. Names The announcement of the 2005-06 Association of Division III All-Independent Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams came from Kansas City, Missouri, today. The Association consists of 17 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize their student-athletes and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in seven sports in 2005-06. The Saint Joseph 's College women's team, led by Coach Deb Reardon, finished 10-16 and won the Northeast Regional Championship with a 60-39 win over Maine Presque-Isle. Senior Kaylin Regula (Windham, Me.) was named to the All-Independent Second Team. Regula led St. Joe's with 11.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game. STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College women’s basketball team played its best basketball during the final week of the season and used the momentum to earn back-to-back D3 Independent Championship plaques. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) equaled her season high of 15 points and added 10 rebounds as #3 St. Joe’s defeated #1 Maine-Presque Isle, 60-39 in the championship game at the Alfond Center. First-year Alyson Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) scored 13 points and grabbed 10 boards to go with her 4 steals and two assists. The first half was marked by several lead changes until a 10-0 run over the final five minutes gave St. Joe’s a 29-19 advantage going into the break. The Monks (10-16) forced 11 turnovers and held the Lady Owls to just 17.4% from the floor in the half. Maine Presque Isle (17-7) came out strong to start the second stanza as first year Johanna Bubar (Riverview, NB) scored 6 of her nine points in the first four minutes and senior Sarah Beasley (Houlton, ME) added a jumper to cut the lead to 2. Farrell scored for SJC at 15:26 to go up 31-27. The Lady Owls threatened again, cutting the lead to 3 after a lay-up by junior Leah Joy (Swans Island, ME) at 11:58 but would get no closer as the Monks outscored them 25-7 over the final 10 minutes of play. St. Joe’s seniors Danielle Somma (Gray, ME) and Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) closed out their careers with tremendous performances. Somma scored a career-high 15 points with 6 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals and earned the tournament MVP award. Regula dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and dished out 7 assists to go along with 2 steals and 2 points and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Sarah Beasley led Maine Presque Isle with 11 points, 7 boards, 5 assists and two steals and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Jessica Cyr (Caribou, ME) who had 5 points and 3 boards. III Independents STANDISH, ME - Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) recorded the first triple-double of her career with 12 boards, 10 points and 12 assists as Saint Joseph's College edged St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn, 64-62 in overtime. The Monks (9-16) will take on Maine Presque Isle in the championship game of the Division III Independents Northeast Tournament at the Alfond Center tomorrow at 12:00 pm. The Lady Bears finish the season 18-11. St. Joe’s (NY) held a 35-28 advantage going into the break due to the sharp shooting of junior Lynette Reyes (4/4 3-PT) who finished with a game-high 24 points. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) kept the Monks within striking distance, connecting on 4/4 from the floor in the first half. The teams battled back and forth in the second half with the Bears holding an 8 point lead with 6:40 to play. St. Joe’s answered back as senior Danielle Somma (Gray, ME) grabbed an offensive board, scored the stick-back and knocked down a jumper and two free-throws to cap a 9-0 run and put the Monks up 56-55 at the 2 minute mark. Reyes tied the game with an offensive rebound and lay-up and sophomore Tara Deahn (Queens, NY) stole the SJC pass in but came up short on her jumper. After a St. Joe’s timeout and a deflection by the Bears, the Monks in bounded the ball to Regula who was fouled and converted 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game with 26 left. Deahn’s deep three fell short at the end of regulation with the score deadlocked 57-57. St. Joe’s went on to outscore the Bears 7-5 in the extra 5 minutes with Somma draining a 12 foot jump shot to start the overtime. Sophomore Ashton Coutu (Danville, VT) grabbed two offensive boards and a steal to finish with a season-high 9 rebounds. Sophomore Annamarie Ciorciari (Queens, NY) finished the game with 14 points for the Bears, including all 5 of her team’s points in overtime and Deahn had 9 points. The St. Joe’s squad turned in their finest team effort of the season with 4 players reaching double figures and two more recording 9 points. Somma and Farrell had 10 points apiece while Pierre-Jacques finished with 10 points and 9 boards. the Association of Division III Independents Women’s Northeast Regional
STANDISH, ME – The Saint Joseph's College women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 55-45 victory over Newbury College on Tuesday night and will host the Association of Division III Independents Northeast Regional Tournament on Feb. 25-26. The Monks received the number 3 seed and will take on St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn. The tournament schedule is as follows: Saturday, February 25 @ 2 p.m.: Sunday, February 26 @ 12 noon: Feb. 21, 2006 Saint Joseph’s Takes Down Newbury STANDISH, MAINE – Kaylin Regula (Windham, Me.) celebrated “Senior Night” with a season-high 22 points and 10 rebounds as St. Joe’s (8-16) defeated Newbury College 55-45. Senior Danielle Somma (Gray, Me.) turned in a strong defensive effort and chipped in with 4 points, 4 boards and 3 assists. The Nighthawks closed out their season at 3-21. Both teams started off slowly and went into the break with the Monks holding a slim 23-22 lead. Saint Joe’s outscored the Nighthawks 10-0 to begin the second stanza and senior Randi Hardiman (Loudon, NH) made two free throws at 14:31 for Newbury’s first points of the half. Hardiman went on to score a team high 22 points. The St. Joe’s lead swelled to 20 points, but senior Devon Frazier (Brimfield, Mass.) converted a three-point play to start a Nighthawk rally with 6:41 to play. Sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, R.I.) put a stop to the 9-0 Newbury run with a lay-up at 4:12 and Regula followed with a jumper to put the Monks up by 16. The Nighthawks would get no closer than 10 points over the final minutes of the period as St. Joe’s (8-16) secured the victory. Sophomore Marie Lint (Orono, Me.) finished with 14 points and 9 boards while first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, Me.) turned in her finest performance of the season with 5 points, 9 boards, 9 steals and 7 assists. Junior Taraja Laws (Easton, Pa.) pulled down 15 boards for Newbury, while senior Danielle Wisniowski (Kensington, Ct.) and Frazier had 9 points apiece. STANDISH, MAINE – The University of New England Nor’easters improved to 14-7 with a 66-40 win over Saint Joseph's College. Senior Essie McKinnon (South Portland, ME) had 13 points in the victory. UNE forced 31 St. Joe’s turnovers and held the Monks to just 44 field goal attempts. The Nor’easters held a commanding 32-15 lead going into the break and continued to limit St. Joe’s scoring opportunities in the second half. St. Joe’s junior captain Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) led all scorers with 14 points and 7 boards. First year Sasha Bowen (Boston, MA) chipped in with 7 points, 4 boards and 2 steals all coming in the second half while first year Mallory Clark (Ipswich, MA) recorded 6 points and 5 boards. Senior Kelsi Royer (Lewiston, ME) had 10 points and three steals and first year Brooke Weston (Dixfield, ME) had 9 points and 4 assists for UNE. STANDISH , MAINE - The Colby Mules used a 10-4 run in the final three minutes of play to secure a 54-49 win over Saint Joseph's College. Colby improves to 8-13 while the Monks drop to 7-12. St. Joe's held a slim 27-26 lead going into the break and battled through four lead changes in the second half. Junior Tracy Nale (Waterville, ME) put Colby up by 4 after knocking down a three pointer with 2:59 to play. Sophomore Katie McCabe (Watertown, CT) led all scores with 19 points and 8 boards while senior Alanna Balboni (Rye, NH) had 14 points and 16 boards for the Mules. STANDISH, ME – Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) returned to the line-up after missing the last contest due to an injury and led the Monks to a 59-52 win over Lasell College. Farrell matched her season best of 15 points and added 5 boards. The first half was marked by 5 lead changes and three ties with St. Joe’s (7-7) holding a 28-22 lead going into the break. The Lasers (6-6) came out strong in the second half and tied the game at 43 on a three pointer by junior Courtney Duffy (South Boston, MA). Sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, RI) put the Monks up 45-43 with a jumper at 9:32 and St. Joe’s would keep the lead for the remainder of the game. Lasell challenged again at 3:25 as two free throws by junior Lauren Picozzi (Coventry, RI) brought the Lasers to within two. A perfectly executed Rauscher/Pierre-Jacques pick and roll with 1:36 to play gave the Monks the cushion they needed to seal the victory. Junior guard Justine Hill (Carver, MA) scored a game-high 19 points and had 5 assists while senior Mandi Rapisardi (Scarborough, ME) recorded 8 points and 7 boards in 36 minutes of action. STANDISH, MAINE – Saint Joseph's women’s basketball's three-game winning streak was halted as Maine Maritime (9-2) defeated the Monks 57-39 before a large crowd at the Alfond Center. St. Joe’s jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a jumper by senior Brittany Rauscher (Oakland, ME), but it would be the only SJC lead in the contest as Maritime went into the break up 28-18. Rauscher scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the first half. Aided by a dismal 27% St. Joe’s shooting performance, the Mariners reeled off three unanswered baskets to start the second half and put the game out of reach. The Monks (6-7) were without the services of two starters and struggled to find any rhythm offensively. Senior Danielle Somma (Gray, ME) turned in a tremendous defensive effort and sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, RI) was a force on the boards. The Monks held a 24-17 lead at the half and were paced by Regula's 12 points, 16 rebounds and 6 assists. Sophomore Marie Lint ( Orono , ME ) added 14 points and 4 boards and sophomore Sarah Willis ( Buckland , MA ) came off the bench to contribute 4 points, 3 assists and 3 boards. LADY MONKS TOP FORT KENT St. Joe's defeated Maine Fort Kent on Wednesday in game 1 of the Green Mountain Tournament by a score of 64-44. The Monks had defeated the Bengals earlier in the season by only 2 points. Sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques ( Providence , RI ) didn't disappoint in her first intercollegiate start, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 points. Pierre-Jacques also had the unenviable task of guarding Fort Kent leading scorer Arcilla Jeffers, who was held to 11 points on 5 for 13 shooting. The Bengals stayed within striking distance in the first half, 28-23, but struggled with pressure early in the second half. The Monks finished with 10 steals and used full-court defense to pull away and build a sizeable lead. Junior captain Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) led the Monks with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Senior Brittany Rauscher (Oakland, ME) chipped in with 11 points, 3 assists and 3 steals while first year Sasha Bowen (Boston, MA) contributed 9 points and 2 assists. St. Joe’s held a 40-26 lead at the half and the bench came alive, scoring 26 points including 7 points, 4 rebounds from first year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) and 8 points, 7 rebounds from sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques (Providence, RI). Thomas center Lea McNary (Marlborough, CT) led all scorers with a 20-point, 12-rebound performance while Kim Drosdik (Farmington, ME) had 10 points for the Terriers (4-5). Earns Split at Husson’s Paul Bunyan Classic
Rauscher and Regula named to All-Tourney Team BANGOR, MAINE – The Saint Joseph's College women’s basketball team went 1-1 at the Husson College Paul Bunyan Classic defeating Maine Fort Kent 57-55 on Saturday and losing 63-59 to Maine Presque Isle on Sunday. Husson had a difficult weekend, losing to both Fort Kent and Presque Isle. On Saturday, Saint Joe’s (3-6) battled a much improved Fort Kent squad and held on for a two point victory, 57-55. Three players from both teams posted double figures and senior Brittany Rauscher (Oakland, ME) turned in her finest performance of the season with 16 points, 2 blocks, 2 steals, 4 boards and a game-high 10 assists. Junior captain Kaylin Regula (Windham, ME) recorded her second double double of the year with 12 points and 11 boards while sophomore Marie Lint (Orono, ME) scored 15 points on 7 for 12 shooting. In Sunday’s contest, Maine Presque Isle took a one point lead in the final 42 seconds of the game on a Sarah Beasley jumper and St. Joe’s failed to convert on a scoring chance with 15 seconds to play. The Owls closed out the game making 3 of 4 free throws to secure a 63-59 victory. Sophomore Megan Farrell (Abington, MA) recorded a double double with 15 points and 11 boards and Regula added 15 points and 9 boards. First-year Sasha Bowen (Boston, MA) had a tremendous outing with 11 points, 9 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals and first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) chipped in with 5 points, 7 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals. Albany College of Pharmacy Tops St. Joe’s in Championship STANDISH, MAINE – Three players scored in double figures to lead Albany College of Pharmacy to a 62-40 win over Saint Joseph's College in the Merry Monk Tournament Championship game. Tourney MVP Randi Maurer (West Leyden, NY) had 16 points, Pam Leonardi (New Milford, NJ) had 16 points and Stefanie Alger (Norwich, NY) recorded a game-high 18 points. The Panthers took a commanding 20 point lead at the half and held off several St. Joe’s come back attempts, outscoring the Monks 29-27 in the second half. St. Joe’s sophomore Yoandree Pierre-Jacques came off the bench to score 6 points and grab 7 boards while sophomore Marie Lint (Orono, ME) had 9 points. College of St. Joseph takes Consolation Game STANDISH, MAINE - College of St. Joseph of Vermont (1-7) thwarted a major comeback effort by Briarcliffe College (5-3) in the final 3 minutes of play to earn a 69-58 win in the consolation game. The Fighting Saints were led by Irene Thompkins (Schenectady, NY) with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Michelle Thompson (Plymouth, NH) had 20 points and Vicky Guetti (Rutland, VT) had 16 points and 10 boards for College of Saint Joseph. Toni Jones (Brooklyn, NY) and Jenese Bennett (Riverhead, NY) both scored 15 for Briarcliffe and Jessica Rourke (Riverhead, NY) chipped in with 13 points, 5 boards and 5 assists. St. Joe’s (1-2) built a 16 point lead in the first half and this would be the difference in the game as both teams scored 35 points in the second half. First year Ashley Hansen (Clinton, CT) scored 20 points and grabbed 7 boards for the Pequots and junior Shayna Barnes (Tarrytown, NJ) chipped in with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Marie Lint (Orono, ME) had 12 points and 7 boards and senior Brittany Rauscher (Oakland, ME) had 10 points and 8 rebounds for St. Joe’s. The Monks received a huge lift from first-year Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME), who came off the bench and had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and no turnovers in 32 minutes. The team plays next at Lyndon State College (VT) on 11/30 at 5:30 p.m. Date: 11/19/05 SAINT JOSEPH'S OPENS ON THE ROAD AT MIT TIP OFF CLASSIC CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – MIT fell to Maine Maritime Academy, 78-63, in the championship game of the 2005 MIT Women’s Basketball Tip Off Classic. In the consolation game, Gordon College defeated St. Joseph’s College (Maine), 69-60. Earning All-Tournament Team honors was Kristen Helgesen (Gordon), Julia Knights (Maine Maritime), Kaylin Regula (St. Joseph’s), and Kimberly Eri Soo Hoo (MIT). Alysa Burns of Maine Maritime was selected as the Tournament MVP. points and seven caroms. In the consolation game, like the championship match-up, the first-half was a back-and-forth affair as there were four ties and seven lead changes. St. Joseph’s held a three-point advantage (10-7), which was its largest of the game, at 15:20. A lay-up by Gordon’s Amy Dodd followed by a pair of free-throws from Beth Pinkham put the Fighting Scots ahead. A lay-up from the Monk’s Kaylin Regula was countered by a pair of free-throws from Kristen Helgesen, which gave Gordon the lead for good with 11:39 left in the half. A jumper by Sarah Weeks at the buzzer gave the Fighting Scots a 45-30 advantage at the intermission. Despite facing a 16-point deficit (58-42) with 8:19 remaining the in game, St. Joseph’s battled back during the next five minutes and cut the lead to 63-58 on a lay-up from Regula. Pinkham ended the Monks’ run with a jumper at the 2:37 mark. Helgesen recorded a game-high 24 points for Gordon (1-1) on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Weeks tallied 14 points while Dodd totaled 13 points and nine assists. Pinkham and Mariwyn Light rounded out the scoring with 10 and eight points, respectively. For St. Joseph’s (0-2), Brittany Rauscher notched 17 points while Marie Lint recorded 14 on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.
