COACH
PROFILES
Will Sanborn has built the Saint Joseph’s
baseball program into a consistent winner. In recent years, Sanborn
has led the Monks into the upper echelon of one of the country’s
toughest regions, the Northeast.
Sanborn’s accomplishments at Saint Joseph’s have been numerous.
During his 16 years as head coach the Monks have won 20+ games twelve
times. Recent history has been particularly impressive as the Monks
posted three straight 30 win season from 2005-2007, and a 28-18 mark
in 2008. In 2005, Saint Joseph’s College Baseball began a new
era as an associate member of the North Atlantic Conference. In the
team’s first season in the NAC, the Monks finished with an impressive
14-1 conference record. Saint Joseph’s Baseball also won its first
North Atlantic Conference Championship and made it’s first-ever
ECAC tournament appearance, finishing with a 32-10 record. In 2006 the
Monks again charted new territory by posting a 34-10-1 record and making
the Monk’s first ever trip to the NCAA New England Regional Tournament.
In 2007 SJC won their third consecutive North Atlantic Conference Championship
and advanced to the NCAA Division III New England Regional for the second
consecutive year. Saint Joseph’s finished the 2007 campaign with
an outstanding 30 - 12 record. 2008 was the first year in the Great
Northeast Athletic Conference and the Monks set the tone by winning
the GNAC Championship and once again advancing to the NCAA New England
Regional - finishing with a 28-18 record.
Prior to these most recent NCAA accomplishments – Saint Joseph’s
College baseball set the standard for NAIA New England baseball under
Sanborn’s direction. In 2002, Saint Joseph’s completed its
NAIA New England dominance by once again winning the NAIA New England
Championship. The Monks then moved on to capture the NAIA Region X Championship
in Orangeburg, New York. Sanborn has led Saint Joseph’s to New
England championships on five different occasions (1994, 1996, 1997,
2000, 2002) and has three Maine Athletic Conference titles under his
belt (1999, 2000, 2001).
Although his teams have enjoyed a high level of success recently, success
is certainly not new to Sanborn; he has more wins than any baseball
coach in school history. He enters the 2009 season with a 16-year record
of 405-247-6 (.621)
“It’s a tribute to the continued commitment that Saint Joseph’s
has made to our baseball program. The College has given us the tools
to build a winning program. The foundation of our program has been the
fine young men we have been able to attract to our campus,” says
Sanborn of his success with the Monks. “We have had outstanding
groups of student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who
have all contributed to our success, so I don’t think of this
as a personal accomplishment as much as it is a Saint Joseph’s
accomplishment.”
Since arriving at Saint Joseph’s as head coach for the fall of
1992, Sanborn has made tremendous improvements to the baseball facilities.
Larry Mahaney Diamond is one of the finest baseball facilities in the
Northeast and includes a new wooden fence, lights, press box, hitting
area, bleachers, locker room and an inning-by-inning electronic scoreboard,
making every baseball game at Saint Joseph’s a first-class affair.
Will Sanborn’s drive to win first became evident during his playing
career at Saint Joseph’s from 1984-86 when he was a member of
some of the programs’ finest teams. During that time, the Monks
averaged just over 20 wins per season, including 25-plus wins in 1985
and 1986. In 1986, his senior season, Sanborn played an integral role
in leading Saint Joseph’s to their second highest win total in
program history (34) and their first-ever New England championship.
Sanborn is still part of the SJC single-season record book for games
played (48), runs scored (59) and walks (51).
Prior to taking over as head coach at Saint Joseph’s, Sanborn
coached at many levels. He has held coaching positions with Bonny Eagle
High School, Bar Mills American Legion and the Portland Twilight League.
He is also Director of the Saint Joseph’s College Baseball Camp,
and currently serves as the Associate Director of Athletics at Saint
Joseph’s College.
Will resides in Standish with his wife, Lynn Brown, and their two children,
Morgan and Lincoln.
Corey McCarthy is entering his fifth season as a member of the Monks’
coaching staff. Corey is a 1993 graduate of Midway High School in Inkster,
North Dakota. Following High School, Corey went on to play college baseball
as an infielder for NAIA Schools Mayville State University, University
of Minnesota-Crookston, and University of Mary.
Corey began his coaching career in 1994 and has coached at all levels,
including Little League, Babe Ruth, Legion, Senior Babe Ruth, and Twilight
League. In 2001, he accepted the position of Assistant Coach for Marshwood
High School’s baseball squad. While there, Corey worked with Head
Coach Doug Lewis for 4 years including the 2003 season when the Hawks
advanced to the Western Maine Class A Semi-Finals.
Coach Sanborn comments on Coach McCarthy, “It is no coincidence
that one of the most successful and consistent periods in St. Joe’s
baseball history has come to our program since the addition of Coach
McCarthy. Corey is not only well respected but he is well liked by our
players. He is a fine teacher of the game who brings a great deal to
the program – both on and off the field. Corey has also become
a great scout and recruiter – helping to bring many talented players
to our program. Perhaps most importantly Coach McCarthy has added a
great deal to our team chemistry and team culture. His unselfish commitment
to St. Joe’s baseball has been a real key to our success.”
Corey serves as the Sports Information Director for Saint Josephs’
College. He resides in Standish, Maine with his wife Katie McCarthy
and his infant son Cameron.
A 2003 Saint Joseph’s College graduate and standout baseball
player, Nick Mirabello returned to the shores of Sebago Lake to serve
as Assistant Baseball Coach in 2007. Known for his positive attitude
and high energy as a player, Nick brings the same passion and drive
to his coaching career.
As a player at St. Joe’s Nick was a key part of several outstanding
teams. An excellent outfielder with blazing speed Nick was a left handed
hitter who could spray the ball to all fields, and bunt for a base hit
at will. During his four years as a Monk the team compiled an impressive
112-58 record with one Maine Athletic Conference Championship, one Regular
Season MAC Title, two NAIA New England Championships, and one NAIA Northeast
Region Championship.
When Nick graduated from Saint Joseph’s College he began a professional
career in baseball working for Comcast as Director of Marketing for
the Baltimore Orioles Single A affiliate – the Delmarva Shorebirds.
As he began to climb the corporate ladder Nick was moved to Philadelphia
where he worked for Comcast at the Wachovia Center. With another promotion
to the west coast in the offing, Nick decided it was time to return
to his roots and begin his coaching career at Saint Joseph’s College.
Coach Sanborn on Nick’s return to SJC; “It is truly a pleasure
to have Coach Mirabello as part of our coaching staff. Nick knows the
tradition and expectations of Saint Joseph’s College baseball
from a players’ perspective. His energy and enthusiasm is infectious
– he has already added a tremendous amount to our team.”
Nick lives at Saint Joseph’s College and also serves as a part
of the Student Life staff.

ROD CHOROSZY
Assistant Coach
First Season |
At the top of Coach Sanborn’s recruiting wish list for 2009 was
a top notch pitching coach, and the St. Joe’s skipper landed his
top choice – Rod Choroszy. Rod’s duties will include overseeing
the pitching staff, assisting with practice and game planning, and recruiting.
Choroszy joins the SJC baseball staff after coaching at Southern Maine
Community College as an assistant under Head Coach Phil Desjardins for
the past three seasons. While there, Choroszy helped guide the Seawolves
to a pair of Yankee Small College Conference Championships.
Choroszy served as the head baseball coach for South Portland High School
for 16 years in the 1980’s and ‘90’s and steered the
Red Riots to the Western Maine playoffs in 12 seasons, including three
trips to the finals and one Western Maine Championship.
As a pitcher at the University of Maine under the tutelage of the late
Jack Butterfield, Choroszy compiled records for the most appearances
and saves in a single season.
Choroszy, a University of Maine graduate with a degree in Health and
Physical Education, is currently a health and physical education teacher
at South Portland High School and resides in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

MIKE
GREVE
Assistant Coach
First Season
(Second overall) |
Mike will once again don the royal blue for Coach Sanborn as he returns
to the program as the Monks Junior Varsity Coach. Mike played his high
school baseball for Jeff Trundy at Cony High School and was part of
a pipeline of Augusta natives to come through the St. Joe’s program
in the late 90s. Mike had a fine career for the Monks from 1997 –
2000 when he was the starting first baseman. His career stats reflect
his prowess with the bat as his four-year totals show that he hit .292
with 12 home runs and 73 RBIs. Perhaps his most productive year was
his junior season in which he hit .320 with 41 hits and 40 RBIs. It
was also in 1999 that Mike put on an impressive performance vs. the
University of Southern Maine, going 4 for 4 with 2 home runs and 2 doubles.
Typical of Mike he played his best games against strong competition
in big situations. Most impressive is that Mike was a key part of some
of the most successful teams in St. Joe’s history. During his
time at St. Joe’s the Monks were an incredible 105-58-3 while
winning two NAIA New England Championships and two Maine Athletic Conference
Championships.
After being out of the game since a brief stint as a volunteer assistant
for Coach Sanborn in 2005, Mike is very excited to be working with the
Monks baseball program again. He will work primarily with the hitters
and first basemen.
