- Saint Joseph's College Tabs Mike Edgar to Lead New Men’s Lacrosse
Program |
Standish, ME - Saint Joseph’s College has named Mike Edgar as
its first-ever Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach. Edgar is currently the
President of the Maine Chapter of U.S. Lacrosse and, for the past
two seasons, was the boys' head lacrosse coach at South Portland
High School. This summer Edgar was selected to be on a panel of
24 coaches responsible for selecting the United States National
U19 Boys Lacrosse team.
The men’s lacrosse program at Saint Joseph’s has had club status
for the past few years and in 2007-08 will compete in its first
season as a varsity NCAA Division III team.
Edgar has been a fixture in Maine lacrosse for some time. In 1981,
as a high school student at Cape Elizabeth, he was the driving
force behind the school beginning varsity lacrosse. In 1991, when
there was not much of any high school lacrosse in the Portland
area, he was one of the trailblazers to begin and coach the Back
Bay Lacrosse Club, and from 1999-2006, he was the head varsity
coach at Greeley High School. “This is an important
time in Saint Joseph’s athletics, particularly for our three new
sports, which includes men’s lacrosse,” said Brian Curtin, Director
of Athletics at Saint Joseph’s College. “We are excited to know
that the men’s lacrosse program will be guided by Coach Edgar
who has significant leadership experience and so much passion
for the game of lacrosse. We feel that it is a perfect fit.”
Saint Joseph’s College Intercollegiate Athletics Department sponsors
14 NCAA Division III teams and is entering its first year as a
full member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. In 2007-08,
Swimming, Women’s Lacrosse and Men’s Lacrosse will participate
in their first season as varsity teams. Saint Joseph’s College
is a private, liberal arts institution located on beautiful Sebago
Lake in southern Maine. |
