Joel Bancroft returns for his second season as the Monks’ clipboard
carrier in 2009.
In his first season, Bancroft guided the Royal Blue to a 12-7-3 record
and a corresponding .632 winning percentage, a new program high. The
Monks, with a 6-2-1 GNAC record, earned the #3 seed in the conference
tournament and defeated both #6 Johnson & Wales and #2 Lasell to
advance to the league title tilt against top-seeded Norwich. The SJC
side was the only league team to take a point away from Norwich in 2008,
as the Monks played the regionally-ranked Cadets to a 1-1 stalemate
on September 23rd. St. Joe’s fell in the championship in a hard-fought
2-1 defeat, but the Monks were rewarded with the program’s first
ECAC Tournament berth as the #6 seed. The Royal Blue fought valiantly
against third-seeded Coast Guard Academy in the ECAC opener, but lost
1-0 in overtime to the eventual tournament champs.
Aside from setting a new team record for winning percentage, Bancroft’s
defensive philosophy helped put the 2008 team atop the program’s
all-time list for longest undefeated streak (eight games), consecutive
shutouts (four), total shutouts (10), and fewest goals allowed (20).
St. Joe’s led the GNAC in goals-against average (.087), and tied
for the lead in both fewest goals allowed and shutouts. Six of his players
garnered All-Conference honors, including First Team honoree Will Pike
’10 (Gorham, ME).
Prior to the 2007 season Bancroft was tabbed as the Co-Head Coach after
serving as an assistant coach in 2006. Coach Bancroft also spent a year
as an assistant at the University of New England in 2005.
A graduate of Westbrook High School where he was a team captain and
received all-league honors, Bancroft went on to play at the collegiate
level for University of Southern Maine. While there he was named as
a team captain and received All-Little East honors. He has since played
club soccer with the Cumberland United side, where he has served as
a captain and been a part of five state championships.
Bancroft is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a degree
in Liberal Arts. He currently resides in Portland with his wife, Lynn,
and their German shepherds, Kaiser and Raina.
