All-New England Second Team

D3Kicks.com

STANDISH, ME – Senior defender Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA) of the Saint Joseph's College women’s soccer team has been named to the D3Kicks.com All-New England Region Second Team. Leger, a two-year team captain, earns the honor after helping St. Joe’s post a 16-2-3 record in 2007, the best in program history.

Earlier this year, Leger was named as a GNAC First Team All Conference defender, received GNAC All-Tournament honors and was nominated to the NCAA D III All-New England Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. In addition, Leger was the recipient of the Saint Joseph's College team MVP award following the conclusion of the 2007 season.

As a junior Leger earned nominations to the All-Independent Women's Soccer First Team and the D3 Kicks All-New England Second Team and was named to the All-Independent Women's Soccer team her sophomore year.

Leger has been a four-year starting Defender and two-year Captain for Head Women's Soccer Coach Michael Bolanz. During her time as a player for St. Joe's the team has amassed a 50-24-4 (.676) record.

In her four seasons donning a St. Joe’s uniform, Leger played in 71 games, scored 2 goals with 13 assists for 17 total points and helped the Monks post a total of 35 shutouts.

The players selected for the D3Kicks.com All-Region Teams have been nominated by Sports Information Directors and coaches from around the country. Each region consists of three teams; a first, second, and third team and each team is composed of a goalkeeper, three defenders, four midfielders, and three forwards.

St. Joe’s Women’s Soccer 2007 Season Review

The Women’s Soccer team concluded another excellent season with the best record in the Program’s 20 year history. The Lady Monks went 16-2-3, with both losses coming in thrilling overtime affairs. The 2007 team broke many of the program’s records including wins (16), winning percentage (88.9%), consecutive wins (11), goals scored (74), and assists (57).

The women’s soccer team posted a 12-1-2 conference record in their inaugural season in the GNAC and earned a #2 seed in the playoffs. St. Joe’s hosted Albertus Magnus College in the quarterfinal match and won 4-0 behind a dominant defense and two goals from SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME). The team’s bid for a GNAC title ended when they suffered a heartbreaking shootout loss at the hands of Emerson College in the GNAC semifinal game.

The 2007 campaign continued for the Lady Monks as they were selected to participate in the ECAC Division III New England Championship. As the #4 seed, St. Joe’s hosted a regional postseason game for the first time in program history when they played #5 seed MIT at home. Unfortunately the women saw their season come to an end as they fell short in a hard-fought contest, losing 1-0 to MIT in overtime.

The Lady Monks were led offensively in 2007 by FY Mikayla Call (Portland, ME) and SO Anna Willis (Gorham, ME). The pair combined for 63 points in 21 games for the 19th ranked offense in the country. St. Joe’s outscored their opponents by an incredible 60 goals in 2007, 74-14. The goals total surpassed the all-time single season record of 70 goals scored in 2005. SO goalkeeper Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME) posted a strong season with a 0.59 goals against average, the third best single season average ever by a St. Joe’s goalie (26th in the nation). Mayo also notched seven shutouts in ’07, the fourth highest single season tally in Lady Monks history.

The stingy St. Joe’s defense was led by the only two seniors on the team: Allison Walton (Meredith, NH) and Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA). Both players served as team captains and were the backbone of the team, on and off the playing field.

The postseason awards were abundant for the members of the 2007 Lady Monks soccer squad. Four team members were GNAC All Conference First Team: SR Defender Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA), SO Goalkeeper Katye Mayo (Fairfield, ME), FY Midfielder Elizabeth Theberge (Danvers, MA) and FY Forward Mikayla Call (Portland, ME). Four players were also voted to the Second Team: SR Defender Allison Walton (Meredith, NH), JR Midfielder Katie Jordan (Sandwich, MA), SO Midfielder Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, ME) and FY Forward Jessica Needham (E. Bridgewater, MA). Katie Jordan was also named to the GNAC 2007 Sportsmanship Team and Jillian Leger and Anna Willis were both named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team. Leger capped her senior season by being named to the NCAA D III All-New England Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The 2007 Saint Joseph's College Women’s Soccer team graduates only two seniors, defenders Allison Walton and Jillian Leger. Both were vital to the success the team accomplished during their time at St. Joe’s as they helped the team amass a healthy 50-24-4 four-year record.

Although the contributions by the two standout defenders will be missed, the team looks to be dominant for years to come as 3 juniors, 7 sophomores and 7 freshmen from the record-breaking ’07 team return with the goal of taking the program a step further in 2008.

STANDISH, ME – Senior defender Jillian Leger (Westminster, MA) of the Saint Joseph's College women’s soccer team has been named to the NCAA D III All-New England Region Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Leger is the lone representative of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference out of the 44 New England region players honored by the NSCAA.

Earlier this year, Leger was named as a GNAC First Team All Conference defender and also received GNAC All-Tournament honors. In addition, Leger was the recipient of the Saint Joseph's College team MVP award following the conclusion of the 2007 season.

As a junior Leger earned nominations to the All-Independent Women's Soccer First Team and the D3 Kicks All-New England Second Team. After her sophomore year she was named to the All-Independent Women's Soccer team as well.

Leger has been a 4-year starting Defender and 2-year Captain for Head Women's Soccer Coach Michael Bolanz. During her time as a player for St. Joe's the team has amassed a 50-24-4 (.676) record including a 16-2-3 season in her senior year, the best in the program's history.

In her four seasons donning a St. Joe’s uniform, Leger played in 71 games, scored 2 goals with 13 assists for 17 total points and helped the Monks post a total of 35 shutouts.

“It's difficult for a defender to get the recognition Jill has received," adds Head Coach Michael Bolanz. "Jillian is certainly one of the best players to ever play here at Saint Joseph's College."
