Culture at athenahealth
Our Beginnings
athenahealth didn’t start as a cloud-based services provider for medical practices. We actually began as a medical practice, in 1997 as a California birthing center called athena women’s health and the Birthplace. Founders Jonathan Bush and Todd Park quickly recognized they were spending an enormous amount of effort just trying to get paid for their services. When they couldn’t find a solution to their problem, they developed their own.

What emerged was the origin of the cloud-based services athenahealth is known for today. With our proven combination of cloud-based software, networked knowledge and backoffice services, we are focused on creating a national health information backbone that helps health care work as it should.

Our Culture
After 16 years, we still have our entrepreneurial spirit, and still live by the same culture. It’s a culture that’s led to our recent #45 ranking on WorkplaceDynamics’ list of top places to work in the United States. Not only is athenahealth a disruptive innovator in the large, established, health care IT market, but we pride ourselves on our stability, and a growth rate that’s consistently been at 30% year-over-year.

Regardless of what brought each of us here, we all have a common goal: To be caregivers’ most trusted services, helping them do well doing the right thing.

Our Innovative Energy
A vital part of our culture is its transparency. How many organizations do you know where every employee is officially classified as an “insider,” with the ability to openly challenge their leaders? We encourage new ideas—and you can expect them to be constructively debated! Disruption is a constant that enables us to operate at a fast pace within a flat hierarchy, with meetings held behind glass walls so everyone can see the company’s ongoing collaborative teamwork. At athenahealth, every “athenista” is expected to act as both teacher and learner.

We have a passion for growing and challenging our employees to become well-rounded and informed professionals. Many of our leaders have worked in multiple and varied roles throughout the organization, and we encourage that type of professional curiosity. We are an incubator of innovation, with athenistas consistently contributing to an overarching sense of community, idea exchange, and drive. We reward our people with great salaries, year-end merit bonuses, and perks as playful as free ice cream and our “athenaWeen” family Halloween event. We offer an organic, gourmet cafeteria, a casual dress code, chair massages and discounted gym memberships.

Let’s face it: U.S. health care is broken, and it needs heroes. Consider being an athenista.
We’re saving healthcare one medical care giver at a time and moving an industry. We need your help to do it!
