Baker Newman Noyes is seeking a Tax Manager for their Portland, ME office.


  • For assigned clients, management of all phases of tax compliance and other client engagements for companies in a variety of industries
  • Participation in firm administration and management, including practice development, staff and senior management, and other areas as assigned
  • All other duties as assigned
Generally, five or more years’ experience in taxation with a public accounting firm Masters or other form of 150 college credit hours with requisite accounting related courses (Bachelor degrees may be considered in some situations), CPA certificate required

The firm provides responsibilities and expectations among four key areas: Technical Competence, Client Service/Engagement Management, Business Development and Firm Administration. Key responsibilities and expectations for the Tax Manager position are outlined below:

Technical Competence
  • Effectively and regularly uses the firm’s tax reference materials in resolving issues
  • Researches tax issues and develops sound solutions, and comfortably discusses issues with the engagement principal, management and, where appropriate, the board of directors
  • Keeps current with new tax developments
  • Uses technical expertise to develop others through training sessions, mentoring, supervision and coaching
  • Seeks opportunities to improve technical and management skills through continuing education, seminars, etc
  • Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of one or more specialized tax areas
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the firm’s tax approach
  • Remains informed and up?to?date with issues impacting assigned clients throughout the year
  • Effectively supervises activities of the engagement team and reviews staff and senior work timely and thoroughly to ensure that objectives are achieved
  • Effectively and timely identifies and discusses engagement issues with appropriate levels of client management and the engagement principal
  • Demonstrates creativity and resourcefulness in resolving problems and preparing analyses
  • Performs a timely and thorough review of engagement working papers and tax returns.
  • Reviews and considers the implications of permanent and correspondence file information
  • Effectively and timely clears review notes
  • Promotes the efficient use of computer applications and technology
  • Effectively trains and assists engagement team as needed and appropriate
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of the economics of complex business transactions
  • Works effectively with peers and supervisors across departments to ensure the best alternatives are presented to the client
  • Documents consultations in the workpapers as appropriate
  • Assists with the firm’s training and other initiatives
  • Remains actively involved in industry activities and professional organizations
Client Service/Engagement Management
  • Maintains an awareness of how the client views the engagement team’s performance
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple engagements to a successful and efficient completion
  • Is consistently viewed as highly responsive to client’s needs and requests
  • Identifies ways to improve client service on each engagement
  • Understands the client’s accounting policies, transactions, financial, tax, and business situations.
  • Earns client’s respect and is regularly sought for inquires and requests of the client
  • Effectively manages client’s expectations and the day to day client relationship
  • Builds professional relationships with client’s senior management and key Board members
  • Plans and contributes to the development of relationships between the client and the engagement team
  • Keeps principals on engagements and appropriate levels of client’s management appropriately informed and consults with these individuals as appropriate
  • Takes responsibility for overall engagement quality and efficiency
  • Takes responsibility to influence, support, and implement important decisions
  • Demonstrates excellent supervision and leadership skills
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize and manage competing demands and tasks
  • Identifies conflicts between engagement requirements and staff needs and updates the tax schedule timely
  • Identifies and completes work that can be performed earlier in order to move work from peak times
  • Appropriately delegates where feasible
  • Assists engagement team in completing their sections of the engagement where appropriate and necessary
  • Reviews budgets and engagement hours appropriately in the billing system
  • Prepares timely and accurate progress and final billings for work completed
  • Monitors job progression, including budgeted versus actual hours, and provides timely updates to the principal
  • Meets time deadlines while meeting or exceeding quality requirements
  • Issues tax returns in accordance with client deadlines, and performs tax planning and other engagement activity timely and according to firm policy
  • Respects the personal lives of engagement team members and considers alternatives in order to support team members in balancing multiple commitments, while still meeting client deadlines
  • Locks down tax and related files timely and according to firm policy
  • Provides timely and effective performance feedback to seniors and staff according to firm policy
  • Writes effectively and professionally in workpaper documentation, emails, and other formats
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written presentation skills and ability to present information to management, boards, and other parties as necessary and appropriate
Business Development
  • Generates, pursues and assists in closing proposal opportunities with existing and/or potential clients
  • Seeks to identify proposal opportunities for services to existing or prospective clients, and communicates opportunities on a timely basis to firm management
  • Actively seeks and holds leadership roles in professional, community, and other organizations
  • Has a specific awareness of audit and other services offered by the firm and appropriately identifies situations where they may be of benefit to the client
  • Deals effectively with appropriate level of client personnel and works to build professional relationships with client’s senior management and/or board members where appropriate
  • Interacts with client on a professional level at all times and is confident in ability to deal effectively with client regarding tax, accounting, and business issues
  • Is respected by client personnel
  • Expands relationships with office professionals in areas other than tax
  • Promotes the firm’s capabilities, including specialized services (IT, consulting, audit and other areas)
  • Maintains contact with college friends / associates, particularly those from the business and accounting disciplines
  • Works to develop a network consisting of relationships with attorneys, bankers, and other potential sources of referrals
  • Participates in firm marketing activities when asked or when help is needed
Firm Administration
  • Meets or exceeds all firm CPE requirements
  • Actively works to maintain CPA and (if any) other certifications
  • Understands own strengths and weaknesses and, with the help of others, undertakes a program of self? development
  • When asked or when required, provides seniors and staff with timely, honest, and constructive feedback and serves as a formal and/or informal mentor to staff as appropriate
  • Participates when asked in firm events, including recruiting events, education seminars, business development efforts, and other areas
  • Participates in firm educational opportunities and takes part in the delivery of training
  • Discusses review notes with staff and seniors in a constructive manner
  • Motivates staff through professional and technical reputation, enthusiasm, and positive attitude
  • Actively seeks opportunities to enhance the professional development and job satisfaction of our staff and seniors
  • Identifies opportunities to utilize unassigned staff and seniors
  • Expresses sincere appreciation and avoids unproductive criticism
