For ten-months, 15 RISE AmeriCorps members provide positive youth development opportunities in schools and local agencies throughout the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts.
The RISE (Resources Invested in Student Excellence) AmeriCorps program seeks to reduce drop-out rates in Western Massachusetts by supporting local youth through mentoring, tutoring, and providing other positive youth development opportunities. RISE members gain practical experience and build leadership skills that transfer across careers and vocations, particularly those related to education, youth work, nonprofits, and community work.
The Three Elements of RISE are:
- On-site youth work
- Team service project with fellow members, in collaboration with local community
- Weekly trainings for professional and personal development. (Topics include: youth work best practices, classroom management, diversity&inclusion, civic engagement, asset-based community development, group facilitation, conflict resolution, and collaborating in groups.)
Participants in the RISE AmeriCorps program earn a stipend of $12,100, and they are provided with health care and child care if needed. Additionally, after completing 1700 hours of service, they are eligible for a $5550 Education Award. Nevertheless, the true benefit of RISE is gaining experience and skills, making connections in the region, and collaborating with fellow members and the community.

Members must be at least 18 years old and U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or lawful Permanent Residents.~Youth work experience is recommended, but not required. Some work history is necessary. Because the region service area is mostly rural, it is highly beneficial to have a driver’s license with access to reliable transportation, but it is not a requirement.
