Progressive department on the Southern Maine Coast is looking for qualified, motivated, career-oriented individuals for anticipated Police Officer positions.

To be eligible for the bi-annual police screening process, applications must be received by the City’s Human Resource Office by Monday, April 1, 2013 at 12:00PM.

All applicants who are not currently certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy to work as a full-time police officer in Maine, OR who have not graduated from an equivalent training program making them eligible for certification as a police officer in Maine after waiver of basic training, will take a written examination on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 8:00AM at the South Portland Community Center, 21 Nelson Road, South Portland, ME.

Physical fitness testing (PFT) will be conducted immediately following the written exam, but may be waived for applicants having submitted written proof of having successfully completed the standard MCJA entrance PFT within six months of the application due date.

All applicants to the Police Department must meet the following minimum qualifications:

1. Be at least 20 years old on the date of the written exam
2. Hold a High School Diploma or Equivalent
3. Hold a valid motor vehicle driver’s license
4. Have no disqualifying criminal conduct or conviction(s) (see last page of employment application or the South Portland Police Department Pre-employment Background Booklet).
5. Suitable physical condition allowing successful completion of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s physical fitness entrance standards

In order for your application:

1. Photocopy of the applicant’s current and valid driver’s license.
2. Applicants who are Certified Law Enforcement Officers must submit proof of certification. Applicants who are not Certified Law Enforcement Officers must submit proof that the applicant has passed the ALERT or other standardized test, with at least the minimum passing score, as required for entrance to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP). 3. Applicants must submit proof that the applicant has passed the Physical Fitness Testing (PFT), as required for entrance into the MCJA BLETP, within the six months preceding the application due date. [NOTE: This requirement may be waived for applicants who are Certified Law Enforcement Officers, who will, however, be required to successfully complete the PFT upon any Conditional Offer of employment].
4. Copies of relevant verifying documents, as outlined on page 5 of the employment application.

For purposes of this application, a Certified Law Enforcement Officer means a person who has graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy’s Basic Law Enforcement Training Program and is certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy to work as a full-time police officer in Maine, OR a person who has graduated from an equivalent training program in this or another state, and is eligible for certification as a full-time police officer in Maine after waiver of basic training.

4. Interview with police department staff
