Southern Maine Community College and Saint Joseph’s College sign transfer agreement

Southern Maine Community College and Saint Joseph's College have signed a transfer articulation agreement that will smooth the way for criminal justice majors at the two-year school to enroll in the four-year bachelor's degree program at Saint Joseph's without losing credits.

"SMCC is committed to making sure that our students graduate with a wealth of opportunities ahead of them, whether they are looking to continue their education or secure a great job in Maine," said President James Ortiz. "The agreement with Saint Joseph's will offer our students an exceptional new seamless path to acquiring a bachelor's degree."

"This is a great opportunity for both schools to benefit," said Dr. Joe Lee, president of Saint Joseph's College. "We have small classes and attentive faculty who will work closely with students completing their bachelor's degrees here to make sure they have what they need to transition successfully."

In order to transfer the students' earned college credits, state and federal education policies, as well as institutional and academic program accreditation standards pertaining to the applicant, must comply. Only those who have either earned a degree or are in the process of earning a degree from SMCC will be eligible, and will fall under the same standards and criteria for admission to the degree sequence as incoming Saint Joseph's students. All applicants must also be able to fulfill the graduation requirements of 67 additional credits for the baccalaureate degree.

The agreement became effective in March and will be reviewed in June 2012.
